link Some interesting details: * 'Stop All the Fighting' was begun in Montreux. * There's a date for 'I Go Crazy': 20th December 1982. * 'Streets' (working title of UP) at the Power Station: 9th November (or maybe 11th September considering it was America). * According to Mack, the reason he didn't produce 'The Miracle' or 'Innuendo' was that Freddie didn't want Mack and his family to see him deteriorate. |
cmi 26.12.2013 14:38 |
So they were in the studio in December '82 after 'Hot Space' World Tour? |
Sebastian 26.12.2013 14:59 |
According to that, yeah. TBF, it could've been just Brian, or just Maylor, and it wasn't necessarily Munich (or was it?). |
Apocalipsis_Darko 26.12.2013 19:11 |
Mack can talk openly about a lot of things Maylor or others doesn't want to be public. |
Lord Gaga 26.12.2013 21:05 |
Begun in Montreux, meaning Stop All The Fighting was originally a Queen song? |
Sebastian 26.12.2013 21:56 |
Not necessarily, but perhaps. |
musicland munich 26.12.2013 23:58 |
Yes Darko ! Mack is a good source for details like that ( of course he could disrembering too - no one is flawless). I like the open way he talks about Bowie, Cocaine, Queen guys( all three of them) cheating their wifes etc. |
rocknrolllover 27.12.2013 00:40 |
Hmm, intresting! Thank you for this news. |
Back2TheLight 27.12.2013 02:15 |
I was trying to hear what he said about the Tribute Concert...something about why he didn't want any part to do with it, but couldn't make out his reason why |
Pim Derks 27.12.2013 04:04 |
Respect for those who made it through the whole video. Those Italians don't know when to shut up :D |
Lord Gaga 27.12.2013 06:42 |
Interesting, too, that 'Hold On' was apparently mixed on January 7, 1987. There's so little information about that song that it's good to know at least a little bit. And I wonder if that 20/12/82 date was actually supposed to be '81? It seems odd to me that, considering the tensions surrounding the '82 Hot Space tour, the band would go back into the studio so soon to start recording again. |

Lord Gaga wrote: considering the tensions surrounding the '82 Hot Space tour, the band would go back into the studio so soon to start recording again.Tensions were mostly between Freddie and the others. Sessions could've easily been Brian, John and Roger, or maybe just Brian (drum-machine-aided), and the song would've been finished off a year later. |

@ 9:24 sec: Interesting insight about "Let me live". I never thought about that duet with Rod Stewart as a love song in the type of Kenny Rogers & Sheena Easton "We've Got Tonight", so to speak. Maybe they have changed the lyrics for the MIH version, because there's not "I love you's" like Mack said (or he was just generalizing the feeling of the song?). But really, this is the first time i'm having such perspective on this song. Either way, i still think it would work great between Rod and Freddie, and they would look cute in the video also :-) |

Or maybe it was the band minus Mercury just working on the backing track? I'd definitely date the vocal as 1983. Mercury's voice is raspier, and sounds much more like it did on The Works. We know the backing track was worked on to some extent in 1982 (at least, according to Greg Brooks at a fan convention), but I'd say Mercury's vocal is from 1983. |

Well, Mack sometimes can confuse in dates and things like that, but in general, he open honestly about he lives with them. See the credits of A kind of Magic and you know who were Mack's friends in Queen. The real tension was with one member, the other the relationship was ok. Hold On was a gift from Freddie to Mack. Mack was recording Jo Dare, Freddie appeard to gave a cacke, Mack was working in that song with Jo Dare, and Freddie said, I would sing that. As Spike said, something simmilar happen to Heaven for Everyone. |

Brian and his friends recorded Star Fleet in LA with Mike and Nick engineering. When it was turn to mix it, the Doctor could've asked them to do it, or he could've done it himself, or he could've asked anyone else in America, Britain or Continental Europe (his main destinations at the time). Out of all of those possibilities, he chose Reinhold Mack ... so it's not like they hated each other. After all, Reinhold engineered, mixed and co-produced the most successful single Brian ever wrote. David became more involved in 'A Kind of Magic' as a natural step ... he'd been working with Roger since 1980, and he became closer to Brian when working in the film soundtrack. |
Apocalipsis_Darko 27.12.2013 17:08 |
You can don't feel hate, and don't like a person Sebastian. There's a difference. Said after talk too much with Mack, and not always agree with him. |
Sebastian 27.12.2013 17:55 |
The fact they had differences of opinion sometimes doesn't mean they disliked each other. Had Brian disliked Reinhold, he wouldn't have chosen him to mix the whole Star Fleet EP, and he wouldn't have chosen him to work on the Flash Gordon OST with him. |
anato 27.12.2013 19:30 |
In Tony Iommi biog it is mentioned he calls.Brian up to get a testimonial on Mack as Sabbath are considering him for a forthcoming album. Brian tries to.talk Iommi out of the decision saying he is difficult to work.with and will take them in directions they won't be happy with |
Sebastian 27.12.2013 19:34 |
Have you got the source? |
Apocalipsis_Darko 27.12.2013 19:44 |
Sebastian, I have source about the relationship between Mack and Brian. By Mack, by Roger Taylor, etc... And what Anato says, it's true. Buy the Iommi biography, and is on it. And Josh Homme said one time, a band will be great doing music, but not friends. Sometimes is like a job. You and me can do a good job in something, but not being friends. |
Sebastian 27.12.2013 20:08 |
Brian and Reinhold weren't necessarily friends, but it doesn't mean they disliked each other. They worked well together and there's a reason why The Doctor headhunted Mack to mix his off-Queen project. |
Apocalipsis_Darko 27.12.2013 20:22 |
I send you a private message Sebastian. |

That's brill, thanks. I'll definitely buy it. I love how he talks about Rick Wakeman. By the way: link From 5.55 to 7.50 they're both praising Reinhold. |
musicland munich 28.12.2013 00:12 |
In that "40 Jahre Queen" documentry on german TV, MACK said something about their working relations. He (MACK) wasn't satisfied with Brians "old school method" of doing songs. . Mack said that Brian should change a bit of his methods. I would say they sort things out in a creative way. |
Mr.QueenFan 02.01.2014 09:56 |
On a side note, i just want to point out that we as fans should respect more these people's time and their efforts to be in Queen conventions and talk about Freddie, the band, and studio sessions. Of course this is not aimed at everybody, but what happened here with Mack talking and people talking over him is sad. When Mack is in the room talking, you shut up and listen. This is how we learn something useful. In these days that there is nothing coming out from the source, we should take every opportunity we can to make the best out of these people who are willing to share their experiences, and ask them questions that are pertinent. Because, if it wasn't for Mack, who'd already scripted his presentation, i feel that nothing good would have come out of this, because people are still more interested to know how it was working with Queen, and were they nice to work with, than real questions about sessions, time frames and other things that are more juicy right now than to know if Mack and Brian were best friends forever. As i said, not aimed at everybody, but i believe people can behave better than this. |
Pim Derks 02.01.2014 11:20 |
I wish people like Mack would show up at the Dutch convention. Then I'd definitely go once again (last time was 2005, went 5 or 6 times before that). Every years it's the same. Peter Freestone talking about what Freddie liked to eat, Greg Brooks showing some videos and some games and a raffle. I wish they'd get Mack, Justin Shirley Smith or someone else to talk about more in-depth stuff! How amazing would it be to have JSS do a talk about how they created Made In Heaven, teasing with some snippets, multitracks etc. I'd pay money just for that! |
The Real Wizard 02.01.2014 20:00 |
^ what the last two people said. |

Opportunities rarely, if at all, come up more than once. About a decade ago I missed out on meeting Nuno Bettencourt for a completely stupid reason, and so far I've never been even close to getting another chance. |
Sheer Brass Neck 02.01.2014 22:17 |
Oh Sebastian, I feel for you. Nuno is absolutely amazing. I've see him with Extreme 3 times, and solo on his Schizophonic tour at a bar in Toronto, what a night that was, ten feet from him. He's a musical genius. |
Sebastian 02.01.2014 23:48 |
It wasn't a concert, it was a meet and greet :S I could've had him sign my guitar and take a pic with me, but no... rowing with my then-girlfriend and self-victimising about it for a week seemed to be more important at the moment. Not her fault, it was me who ruined it... both the relationship and the chance to talk to Nuno face to face. |
cmsdrums 03.01.2014 10:44 |
I met Extreme at a signing in London on 22 Dec 92, and Nuno commented on my 'The Cross' long sleeved shirt! ;I was going to see The Cross that night and Extreme, with Brian guesting, the next! |

In late 2011, I was considering going to one of Rihanna's gigs at the O2, just to see him, but then decided not to. Nothing against Rihanna, but I don't think I'd manage to stand a full concert of hers, let alone to spend so much money on that. Hopefully, there'll be another solo tour one day, or another Extreme reunion ... I heard the last one was cancelled because of scheduling conflicts, and apparently, that bitch is more important than the band ... I really hope he's hitting that, otherwise it's not worth it. PS: Hitting that, as in shagging her, not as in being physically abusive to her (although history teaches us that's what she seeks for... unfortunately). |
