Anyone remember the bit after the last line when Freddie exits the screen with a click of his fingers? I hadn't looked at this in years but now find a small change where now the last we see of Freddie is when he says "I still love you" and then instead of the finger click Brian has been edited in.Why change what was just right? The revenge of George "I don't like Star Wars" Lucas? |
The Nosuch Disco 06.10.2013 09:15 |
I could be wrong, but the whole video was re-edited for the 1999 Greatest Flix 3. When the video was originally shot, Brian wasn't present, so shots of him are interspersed with the original footage from May 1991... the 1999 has some long shots of the entire band, to make it look like they were all present at that time. Why the ending was changed i'll never know, but I agree with you, that little wave/click that Freddie did was quite a lovely way to end the video. |
antiden 06.10.2013 11:37 |
The original b&w video NEVER ended with Freddie's finger click. I remember watching it back in 1992 and it definitely ended with Brian's scene. |
AlexRocks 06.10.2013 11:52 |
There are upwards of four different versions of this "short promotional film" i.e. "music video". |

It was an edit piece, why would they keep it in? They were making a music video at the time, not showing the world Freddie had gone now.... because they didn't know this was the last footage... |

I can agree with "mooghead" this time...unusual for me but he is right. |

But "why keep it in"? - well, when it was re-edited, the "finger-click" is now known as his last footage, so it was absolutely right to keep it in. It is a very poignant moment, and just a fitting way to end things. |
k-m 07.10.2013 17:34 |
Well, filming someone as ill as Freddie was back then, I think they might have suspected it could become the last footage... Come on... |

The wave can be seen on these later colour mixes. link link |

I seem to remember that the very first time I saw the video was on that docummentary hosted by Axl Rose (wasn't it also entitled "Days of our lives"?). It ended with the "premiere" of the promo film for TATDOOL and certainly the last shot was Freddie's finger click and waving. Hence any subsequent version with an alternative ending shot was not the "original" video, at least to me! |

It's not a video I have watched all the way though much since 1991, but I remember the wave. The ending on that Axl doc looks like and edit for the advert? What happened to the animated video anyway? :o) |
. 09.10.2013 02:09 |
^ It's not an edit for adverts, anyway it's hardly likely they would insert adverts during the credits is it? |
The Nosuch Disco 09.10.2013 18:00 |
In the UK the video was premiered at the end of a hastily cobbled together clip show with an intro by Elton John, I think it was a few days after Freddie died. That version had the click/wave as the last shot... i watched it over and over when i was young... I hope my feeble old brain isn't playing tricks on me... wish i could find the show! |
dysan 10.10.2013 03:34 |
@Kurgan - sorry I wasn't clear, on the Axl doc it cuts to brian and has an advert over the image. |

Was it part of a longer program, and If so, do you remember the name of it? it was a compilation of performances and interviews, mostly edited from the Magic Years DVDs I think, and it heavily featured their Live Aid performance. Whilst there was nothing new in it, at least the BBC put something on in tribute. A visibly upset Elton gave an introduction piece to camera, and yes, they closed with the TATDOOL promo, though without looking it up I can't recall which edit it was. |

Thanks for that info cmsdrums, It's probably what Vali may have been thinking of. Perhaps you could check it out at some point? *** UPDATE *** After checking my VHS copy I can confirm it does not have the wave at the end either. I also discovered I have the full version with the animation, I'll upload it to YouTube at some point. |

No probs - I need to dig out my VHS player anyway to preserve some old stuff digitally |

I wonder where the ''wave'' version was actually shown then. |

You're right, i wasn't aware that the ending was changed, because for years i remember the "original" edit - and for me - the only one that makes sense because it was Freddie's last take and he meant it as a goodbye to his fans. Here is the "original" editing on the "Champions of the world" documentary. Clip starts around 7:45 link This was very well spot, and since people from Queen Productions read Queenzone, i believe that this is a good opportunity for someone to tell Rhys Thomas about this, because this is easily something that can go unnoticed for future releases, and it's a good opportunity to let them know that the original video with Freddie's wave should become the official video to this song again. But since no one here in Queenzone remembers it, i'm beginning to question myself if i really saw it outside the "Champs of the world" doc. A good way to find out is if someone has this video recorded from TV pre- 1999. |

All things being considered, I think a last shot of him smiling to himself as he looks down and up again to say that last line is as equally touching. Do we really need a final wave as well? Perhaps that's why it was edited a little. |
The Nosuch Disco 12.10.2013 03:58 |
I did a bit of trawling last night and couldn't find any pre 1999 video. What I did find was this... link Its not great, someone has added the behind the scenes shots to what might be the original video. A reason why they probably changed it is; Freddie does he wave/click thing at about 3:55... there's still 20 seconds of music to go and that over black doesn't really work. Just a thought anyway. |
. 12.10.2013 09:17 |
^ I did already provide a link for that one in my earlier post. |

oh yes, sorry Kurgan - I missed that one |
AlexRocks 12.10.2013 10:30 |
Folks, lol. That was just the way that that was edited for the documentary lol. There are four versions I think. The one with Freddie at the end and I can't remember exactly how that one ends I guess it had Roger drumming maybe? The second one that was different was from the U.S. Hollywood Records music home video on VHS called "Classic Queen" from 1992 that had the animation throughout a bunch of it and ended I think showing animation as well. The third short promotional film for "These Are The Days Of Our Lives" was the black and white film interspersed with a goldish yellowish tint to it ever so often with clips throughout their career. If I recall that came out around the time of "Classic Queen" either shortly before the music home video was released or at that time I think. That would have been about the summer of 1992. Then the fourth short promotional film just shows and has Brian at the end. If I am getting all of this straight... |
cmsdrums 12.10.2013 11:29 |
The main question is as to why, when you have made and finished a perfectly fine promo video to use, you then re-edit it ever so slightly several times for different releases?!! |
Thistle 12.10.2013 11:46 |
^ Yeah, stupid. But then again....it's Queen..... |
