I am sorry, but I just do not want anybody to impersonate Freddie. He was just such a fantastic larger than life real person, and I feel making a biopic of him relegates him to being just another movie character. There is so much original material available; I'd rather watch a really, really well made Freddie documentary than see SBC or any other actor try to imitate him. Why bother with imitations when we had the ultra amazing original? And I honestly feel no actor can do justice to the dynamic Mr. Mercury. This being said, I know I shall go watch the movie as soon as it come out. Just morbid curiosity. What do you think? |

I'll probably watch it, but when it comes out I'm going to be looking from reviews (both from this site and from professional critics). If it just looks like a waste of time then I won't see it. I don't really mind Freddie being portrayed. There are plenty of documentaries anyway, maybe it's time for the band to have a big movie like this made. Again, a lot depends on whether or not it's actually any good. |

Most music biographies are terrible. That's not open for debate. There are only a small few that have any merit. |

Holly that's all well and good. accepted 100%. but that was not the OP's point. the point was about: "do not want anybody to impersonate Freddie. He was just such a fantastic larger than life real person, and I feel making a biopic of him relegates him to being just another movie character". "Why bother with imitations when we had the ultra amazing original? And I honestly feel no actor can do justice to the dynamic Mr. Mercury" which, as i said in my original reply - are extremely silly notions, when freddie is compared to the names i cited...why his HE any more "sacred" or "off limits" than ALL of the huge world figures i referred to?. |

Actually Brenski, I do not like any biopics. Most of them are so lame. But since this is a Queen forum (and with Freddie's biopic expected soon), you surely did not expect me to post about Christ or Mahatma Gandhi, did you? Whether it is Freddie or Gandhi, I think it is such crass commercialisation to take the life, talent, passions, complexity of a brilliant human being and cram it into a 2 hour movie. Like reading Cliff Notes instead of the original Shakespeare. OK, sorry for the rant! I'm done. |
brENsKi 04.04.2013 16:06 |
you are completely missing the point i make. but i'll explain it simply for you. you imply that Freddie is so special as a biopic to be almost insulting to him...no-one is worthy of playing him in a move etc etc etc blah blah blah. the counter that i put is that, what makes him (freddie) so special - to be exempt/above the demeaning/insulting nature of a warts n all biopic, when much bigger figures live and dead, have also received the biopic treatment - without anyone saying "surely a biopic is insulting to him/her" point being, that very public figures get reported on - this includes - newsprint, magazines, tv and movies - inescapable fact. public figures who live outrageously riotous private lives will not escape the biopic....it's human nature. it's like you are hailing FM as some kind of plaster saint - when he was anything but. |
Missreclusive 04.04.2013 21:09 |
Flesh, bronze, plaster, paper mache or whatever...Freddie was one of a kind, very unique, no, not a saint...which made him all the more interesting, genuine, real. I seriously doubt anyone could play the part and do it justice. I too would go see it and go in knowing I'll be amused if nothing else. Not disappointed. The way he was, he would most likely be flattered that they did a biopic. Speaking of flattery... I think he would have loved Marc Martels talent. I'm still pissed that Roger and Brian wont take him on for a bit. (not to change the subject) |

Freddie was portrayed as the stage persona he actually was NOT in real life ,by the press. A true biopic should be a chance for his story to be told from his point of view and not those who merely used the image he created to make money for themselves, when he intact created it merely to entertain. A biopic in the end should be a means to allow the subject a chance to be heard and chance for the public to see the motives and reasons from his point of view, and so if there is any mercy ,allow him to be seen as human instead of him being used as a means of continued unreasonable silliness and great blasphemy, which he would in reality hate and think stupid . To contrast the legend and myth with the reality of a person as in the end normal but possessive of great artistic talents is a perfect way of showing the true genius of the subject also, instead of portraying someone as superman, where you do not show what hard work someone had to undertake in order to create something like Freddie mercury. And of course, a biopic celebrates the genius of the person who is the subject, the reason the biopic is made in the first place. All this can only be achieved effectively if you masterfully create the right dramatic fictional atmosphere , that is believable, and so can convey any drama and emotion and people and points time and place you want the audience to believe in, this requires first and foremost a good script and then good actors ,especially for the main subject, and then good team who can create time place ,pace etcetc. Consider this thought: If Freddie would make a biopic of his life story, why would he bother unless he wanted to show the truth about who he was as a private man,? Surely he would see no point in just showing what the world already has seen of him, I.E his public image. There would be no point as the world already has that image of the stage showman ,the outrageous camp one. If he were to make his own biopic, he would only do it to show he was a real human being who being so creative wanted to share his creation with the world. But he would only bother to make such a thing, if he wanted the world to see he was in the end a real normal human being, for there would be no point otherwise , as the world had enough material that displayed his showman wild side. ‘Because audiences love me, it’s hard for them to believe that somebody like Freddie Mercury could be lonely,’ he said. ‘In fact, my kind of loneliness is the hardest. You can be in a crowd and still be the loneliest person, because you don’t really belong to anyone.’ Read more: link Follow us: @MailOnline on Twitter | DailyMail on Facebook link |

I'm sure die-hard fans of Ray Charles wept like babies when Jamie Foxx won best actor for his well-researched portrayal. I'm sure Heath Ledger wanted to give an honest portrayal of Joker in Dark Knight. The fact that there are critics of this movie even before it has one fame put to film - and such same critics will watch for the 'morbid' curiosity speaks to the hypocrisy of some people on this forum. To the initial author in this thread, I can't understand your logic. If you're against the movie .... DON'T GO SEE IT. Save your hard earned $13 and buy a cd so you can recreate the larger than life movie in your head, and give it an honest representation of how you think the movie should look. I'm sure we'd all love to see it. Otherwise stop this ridiculous rant. |

Otherwise stop this ridiculous rant.Sacha Cohen is the most amateur A LIster to ever top Hollywood in regards to acting ability, this is the reason for critique before the movie Has even started being made, to avert a disaster that is a guaranteed . A disaster that would be a very obvious certainty, with him in the ANY leading dramatic role of ANY movie that is not in HIS unique comedy satire mode. He may be good at his unique brand of political satire, but he cannot dramatically act, and there is a massive difference between what Cohen is good at and what this movie requires for it to succeed as a credible and professionally executed telling of Freddie's life story. This along with other decisions, such as the casting of an equally mediocre and really quite bad actress ,who is virtually an unknown to play Mary, and the recent news they want the incredibly bad and obviously totally un-researched, caricature Freddie, from the very crap Kenny Everett drama involved. All these rumours show that nearly every decision being made , without a director even hired,! are just plain amateur, dumb, and the recipe for total crap! I, as a dedicated Queen fan ,cannot allow this to happen, that is why I have seriously dedicated myself to actually finding actual credible actors who could deliver a professional and worthy movie, that queen and Freddie could be proud of. Ironically , my respect for Stephen Frears has returned, I considered him a serious director who has made some very good movies, and when his name was first mentioned my hopes rose, until I realised he had signed up and had not got rid of Sacha, but now he has severed his ties to the project for the sake of his own career, more so , the the sake of his own conscience and integrity, and well done to him for that! Thank God there are still some souls for whom Money is not everything. |

"I do not want to see anybody play Freddie Mercury (biopic)" So don't go see it. "This being said, I know I shall go watch the movie as soon as it come out. Just morbid curiosity. What do you think?" I think you need to stop whining and make up your mind. Either you don't want to watch it so you don't go to see it, or you do want to watch it and you do go to see it. Either one's just fine, but the schizo-crap you're pulling right now is just silly. |
