I remeber whan i discovered it on You tube and felt so ...content. I had a feeling when listening to them on that interview like i was beeing close to ...a fireplace.
They sound so calm and mature. There must be some melancholia going on but they seem to cope quite well like a tight family realy.
They have to lie and they do when talking about future touring e.t.c. but it dosen't sound anxious or edgy. Perhaps the interviewer has a clue about the real situation and he dosent puss things. Its really strangly nice the way the hole thing comes across.
By that time Queen seem to have made a full circle, the egos are over-shadowed from the situations they are dealing and what comes across are four really mature individuals loughing and chating and enjoying the company of each-other. That sweet cohesion as Brian once had put it.
Also Freddie's voice and temperament on this one is unique. You can hear the inner ever-going turmoils slowing down and there is a sweet sobriety in his demeanour that make him sound very young and very old at the same time.Funny yet really serious.
Any thoughts?
@Stelios
I think you summed up my feelings of the interview perfectly. I've, personally, owned it since it was included as a bounus disc to the 1992 "Queen Collection" box set from Hollywood Records. I've listened to it many times over the years.
well, i remember the actual broadcast. i actually listened to it live on that bank holiday all those years ago and recorded it to a c90 tape at the time - it was about a year beofre is stopped collecting stuff.
i think that Mike Read (the radio 1 dj) managed to dance just the right side of sychophant without appearing to arse-licking.
also thought the banter was good - but a bit forced.
there's nothing in the subtext of the interview to suggest freddie was ill - yes sure they talk about touring etc, and he says he wants a break. but that sounds like most big bands who at some time "came off the road"
not criticising you stelios - but hindsight is a wonderful thing. easy to see "where everything fell into place" but truth is - at that time, they either did an excellent job of masking things or they were transparent - it's either one or the other.
one key question: Mike Read would've surely followed up his questions if he felt a need to. so perhaps they really did do a good job of "apparent transparency"
either that or MR was briefed as to what he could/couldn't ask. i personally doubt this last idea, as he's not said anything since to suggest he may have suspected anything about the band/freddie's illness or anything else, for that matter
@brENsKi I remember my reaction to Mike Read slightly differently: I thought he WAS sycophantic. But then I thought he was talentless anyway. :-)
And yes the interview had me totally fooled. Which was what it was designed to do. :-)
