The official theatrical poster is again very painful to see! Who makes these and most of all who approves these?!?! your thoughts... link Bigger image |
Rubbersuit 14.08.2012 09:27 |
Agreed. It looks like a first attempt at using Photoshop. The colours aren't corrected, the logo is horrid, the layout is terrible and there are obvious photoshop artifacts. Is it me or did they rip off the queen logo from the "Queen Complete Works" book? link It looks like an asian-bootleg DVD cover. |

The Queen logo is from the Magic/Highlander period (check the single covers for Princes and WWTLF0) It is a phenomenally bad poster. Someone has pointed out that the spotlight in the sky makes it look like War Of The Worlds. |
AlexRocks 14.08.2012 10:33 |
The people are all scared because big Freddie is going to eat them! |
AdamMethos 14.08.2012 11:20 |
I don't know if it's the angle or the expression, but the image doesn't even look much like Freddie to me |
queen79luca 14.08.2012 11:42 |
I don t think also that the crowd is from That Evening ! It seems much more recent picture! Also in the QUEEN gig in 86, the field was not sold out.. |

Have anyone had a glance on the original Budapest cover from the VHS? That one is actually worse. |

I don't see the problem with it. It's a cinema poster to be put up in cinemas not a DVD cover. It's purpose is to attract attention from joe public, which I'm sure it will do. |
Rubbersuit 14.08.2012 16:28 |
So would goatse. I think we can hope for a poster that looks like it wasn't created using Photoshop 1996. |
DLCVinnuendo 14.08.2012 16:30 |
the great question, why only freddie on the poster??? |
Bo Alex 14.08.2012 19:15 |
Being himself a graphic designer, Freddie would hate all these crappy artworks and official posters. |

I couldn't resist and put something together.. Maybe GT or someone with connections can get it to the right people in time ;) link |

Yeah I was wrong about the logo. It's a variation on the font Queen were using around the time of A Kind of Magic. The book was also similar to this font. |
GinjaNinja 15.08.2012 09:36 |
That mockup looks great Dane! :) Certainly better than the official poster. |
Wiley 15.08.2012 10:54 |
These alternative covers where kind of a joke years ago and now they are just as good or better than the official ones. Years ago the official covers were decent (MIH, Another World, GHIII even Live at the Bowl) and the overall fandom didn't have access or were proficient in graphic design software. I guess things started going south with Return of the Champions (maybe GVH2?). The first time I remember almost everybody and their mothers going "WTF?!". Then Montreal in 2007, The Cosmos Rocks, etc. Is Richard Gray responsible for these as well? He did some great work in the nineties for Queen. The fan made "Hungarian Rhapsody" cover is very good. Much better than the official poster. |
Bad Seed 15.08.2012 11:44 |
Sorry accidental post |

Dane, where's that mock-up you did for a hypothetical Queen II Deluxe set? That was stunning. |

Dane, your cover looks great! Puts the 'official' release to shame! |
tomchristie22 16.08.2012 01:29 |
Dane's is indeed a lot better - does a good job of capturing the grandness and excitement of the stage show, rather than dulling it like the official one does. Hungarian Rhapsody is still a dumb name...
Wiley wrote: I guess things started going south with Return of the Champions (maybe GVH2?).Haha, Return of the Champions' art had the most sickening font... |
Vali 16.08.2012 04:16 |
There are no excuses; graphic design since ROTC has been very very poor... and there is many talented people out there (some here at QZ!!) that could do far better jobs with no that much effort. I guess we can blame it on the QPL policy of "keeping the family together no matter what". Do you think Richard Gray, knowing himself he's been and will be their official graphic designer forever and ever, will try to make any effort, or be innovative or imaginative? nope. Wich is a pity, as it's proved many products like these start appealling to customers by displaying qualitative artwork. This official promotional art for Budapest is a bad and amateurish joke. Well done Dane, your version rocks. |

The font used in the new trailer got me going on that one.. If the BluRay/DVD release has a crappy cover I will definitely start using my own covers for this and upcoming releases.. |

Let us all be hugely greatful that it at least doesn't have the word 'Rocks' in the title! |

Lostman wrote: Why complain about it all? Why not be grateful for, at least, getting this goddamn release? Some people are grateful for the release. We just hate the cover. Can you not see the difference? Some people do not just roll over and accept any old shit presented to them. If they go ahead with this cover I hope Dane will make his complete cover available so when we buy the DVD we can bin the official rubbish. |
Wiley 16.08.2012 17:48 |
Well, it seems the fans prefer wide angles, shots of the stage with the lighting rig, showing how spectacular and grand our favorite BAND is. Queen Productions firmly believes Freddie was the image of the band and they shove his moustached mugshot down or throats. Just a question, what did everybody think of the Live in Ukraine artwork? Based on my previous argument, this would sit well with fans?. In my opinion it's a nice pic (perhaps a bit too wide a shot) but the font looks amateurish. |
Michael Allred 18.08.2012 09:22 |
Lostman wrote: Why complain about it all? Why not be grateful for, at least, getting this goddamn release?Grateful? REALLY? Like Queen is doing us a favor and them making money of it is somehow some kind of grand gesture on their part? Please..... |
AlexRocks 18.08.2012 10:52 |
The "Live At Ukraine" was quite a good cover. Shows that someone out there cares enough about Queen to go to a show though you wouldn't realize it sometimes with people complaining about them continuing. Great propangda for that case, eh! Lol! But yeah I love it. I don't know if something more could have been done but it was quite good. |
David Jones 19.08.2012 07:45 |

For the purists/completists amongst us: The cinema poster titles the release as 'Hungarian Rhapsody Queen Live In Budapest' whereas the press pack says it's called 'Hungarian Rhapsody: Queen Live in Budapest '86'. So, is the '86 part of the title, or is this the usual annoyingly sloppy approach to accuracy seen all too regularly?? |
qz08927 19.08.2012 12:53 |
Nicely done technically speaking , but it is a very stayed and ordinary well trodden idea, design wise. visually, although you did it well, it is not very enlightening to the general eye, or public, as you cannot identify anyone in the picture, so it may as well just be text. The Official Poster is much better and the expression they have caught on Freddie's face, compliments the atmosphere and speaks of the style of the event itself, as Freddie looks like he is singing a Hungarian Folk song. It is very good also to see Freddie so close up, and to see how his cheek is so high on the far side, Just like Jeremy Kapones'. |

It looks so real and like today's arena crowds, and the lighting is very vivid and modern looking. It is so much better than the video you would think they were two different things. And there is extra footage, so maybe extra crowd footage? Also I am sure the stadium was more total capacity than the Olympic stadium fiasco, where light displays sat in seats and blinked to make you think you were seeing human movement. |

I do like the general design of the poster. But it looks to me like a concept version. Like there are perhaps three or four to choose from. Only someone should recreate it in higher quality. Using better logo elements, combining the photo elements better. |
GratefulFan 22.08.2012 21:26 |
I was at the hair salon after work today and overheard a woman - who I also incidentally overheard saying she was 46 - talking about Freddie in some context along with John Lennon. She went on to say she considered herself a Queen fan. You know because of "Hungarian Rhapsody and We Are the Champions". LOL. Virtually certain it had nothing to do with this release, bad art or no. |
AdamMethos 23.08.2012 02:27 |
LOL. That's like all those people who claim to be huge fans of Freddy Mercury. :D |
