Is it just me or has Roger completely lost the plot? Or perhaps he just has an overdeveloped sense of irony. I certainly wouldn't classify Queen as a cynical band. Remember back in the 80s when Roger said in interviews that he was fiercely against music videos? "Video is detrimental to the music" was his exact quote. But then Queen sorta failed to practice what they preached and went on to make some of the best and most overindulgent videos from that decade. Whaaaaa? And then how about Roger's stance on dance music? "Not my favorite thing" was his exact quote. Fine, Hot Space wasn't his idea, it was all Paul Prenter's fault. And of course, 'A Kind of Magic' was never meant to turn into a dance/pop tune. He blamed Freddie for that. But then consider the electrofied synthfunk of 'The Invisible Man'. What was your excuse then, Rog? Queen's drummer seemed to be incapable of gaining creative control over his own songs. But what was the silent rule? Something about 'the author usually had final control of his songs'. Who was the invisible force on the housed-up 'You Don't Fool Me'? Did Freddie's ghost creep back into the studios in Montreux and remix it? Then fast forward to 1998 with the release of Electric Fire, your own solo album for God's sake. There were more than a handful of songs on that that wouldn't sound too foreign on a dancefloor. Away from music and onto political/social statements. How about the song 'C-Lebrity'? It was a vicious attack on kids who appeared on no-talent hack TV shows. It had bite! But then Roger goes out and creates his very own talent show?? Whaaaa? Why is Roger forever putting his foot in his mouth? I don't understand the guy. His philosophies are commendable but his actions belie them. |

Hmmmm????? |

integrity is something you lose with age it seems c-lebrity is a great track for lyrical content alone. too bad he has shot himself in the foot again and again after that.. |

When I saw the topic title, for some reason I thought you were asking about that weird facial tic he has where he stops talking and seems to be encountering some kind of severe stomach complaint. As to the post itself - I thought it was Dave Richards who was largely responsible for You Don't Fool Me?? - He might've sold out a bit on his music video stance, but to be fair he's usually the one who looks least impressed to be there (or, counter-intuitively, the one who's trying hardest to cover for it). |

Thumbs up there Zebonka! But I also believe, despite that Roger is taking the piss on the whole x-factor or whatever hits the telly shite, or concept. Roger is in my believes the only Queen member who stand closest to his believes, okay with a minor hick up with the xtravaganza..... Tom |
mooghead 22.02.2012 12:01 |
Integrity is very commendable and all that but it will never get in the way if there is money to be made....! Goes for all of Queen (apart from John, and Freddie, so just Brian and Roger actually) |
Sunshine 22.02.2012 12:08 |
Come on folks, you are going to use a quote of more than 30 years ago against him? How ridiculous! |
David Jones 22.02.2012 13:12 |
I've always wondered about his view on AOBTD, he didn't like the disco theme. Erm, Fun It anyone? He said something about his dislike of musicals in a WWRY press release, something like "fucking hating the sound of music cause everyone breaks into song together". You've obviously not seen your own musical then Rog. I used to think he was just pushed into doing shit by Professor Perm but I'm not too sure these days. |
the dude 1366 22.02.2012 17:24 |
K seriously. Roger said that sometimes the video thing doesn't work well with what was meant to be in the song. But duh!!! He knew it was part of the business. I don't know anyone in any business that doesn't have to do something they don't like. Have you ever changed your mind about anything? Roger is not some politician that should have some quote from a 30 year old interview used against him. How stupid. |

He has 4 ex-wives, one current wife and an average of 6 mistresses. They all have platinum cards. Integrity doesn't pay the bills. |
plumrach 23.02.2012 02:43 |
Roger has only been married once before his current wife |

I've got no room to call him senile... dunno any real issues other than the suggested bad judgement |

Yes, Roger didn't like music videos. If you look back at most of them he looked very unhappy and seemed to be bored out of his mind. But he isn't the only one in the group who has a say on what the band does and Freddie was very controlling. Also, it almost permitted for a band to produce a music video along with a popular single (especially in the 80's with MTV starting). If not, it risked the the entire song falling flat. Yes, Roger also wasn't a fan of dance music either. And yes Hot Space wasn't his fault and neither was AKOM (though I disagree on it sounding like a dance/pop album). But Invisible Man, in my opinion, sounds the least bit like a funk/dance tune. It has electric sort of beat to it (synthesizers and such) but the song is very Rock n Roll, IMO. The whole "You Don't Fool Me" argument falls flat because Roger nor Brian had anything to do with the song. The track was constructed entirely of older recordings and was put together by David Richards (Queen's producer). When it comes down to it, this is stuff Mr. Taylor said over 20 years ago. Anybodies opinion can change. But if your talking about Roger going senile, well... It is about time for the man to start coming down with alzheimers... He is kind of old... |
brENsKi 23.02.2012 16:47 |
being a little bit controversial and contradictory does not equate to senility....in my book it's fairly typical of most rock n roll stars...especially stars who wish to maintain or re-raise a profile that make sit acceptable, as it goes with the territory |
splicksplack 23.02.2012 17:44 |
He also wrote "Dear Mr Murdoch" then happily allowed The Sun (one of Murdoch's papers) to give away free We Will Rock You CDs so while publicising the musical also boosting Murdoch's The Sun circulation. Total fuckin hypocrite. |
YAFF 23.02.2012 23:04 |
He's simply a rich, bloated jackass and has always been the weakest link anyway. I can barely listen to most of his "Queen" songs |
tomchristie22 23.02.2012 23:23 |
Not senile... It's not all that surprising that over 30 years his opinion's changed. Though there isn't any excuse for his conflicting opinions on musicals, american idol-esque shows etc. Insulting his music and calling him the weakest link is hardly necessary though. |
Tommilaiho 24.02.2012 03:52 |
I suppose that youpeople never change your opinnions? :D |
unchatenfrance 24.02.2012 09:56 |
To be fair, we have to appreciate not only the fact that people's opinions can change over a span of 30+ years, but also that technology has changed. In the early-mid 80s it was still somewhat possible to ignore the visual medium. Today, given the state of society and technology, that is nigh impossible. If Brian and Roger want their music to stay relevant with newer generations (as I am sure they do - not to mention to keep those royalties coming in) they cannot but pander to the masses through new media. And to be further fair, the extravaganza WAS about talent, giving talented musicians an outlet rather than serving as a platform for famewhores. |

YetAnotherFreddieFan wrote: He's simply a rich, bloated jackass and has always been the weakest link anyway. Keep Yourself Alive is awesome because it was mainly written by Brian but Freddie threw in a few ideas of his own; I'm pretty sure there are a few early songs like that. Roger has been kind of self-centered (well, even more than Brian and Freddie) and that's why he's my least favorite of the four. I love his voice, though |
MERQRY 25.02.2012 00:45 |
I'd say when Queen start to go senile... But talking about Roger... i don't know... he's a little contradictory... he brought the first "disco/funk" song to Queen but hate(like most of the people)hot space kind of music... i remember he even used an electronic drum "pad" in 1977 live (at least at Houston) |

I don't know. He was my favourite part of the IWTBF video, partly due to his looking like such a girl, but mostly because he was having so much fun. I got a sense that John and Brian weren't over the moon about doing it, Freddie was just being Freddie, while Roger looked like he was having a great time. :D |
Dane 25.02.2012 09:04 |
It was on Wednesday februari 2nd of last year at about 11.35pm. But on a serious note I think Roger is smart enough to see that holding on to those ideals just doesn't work nowadays. If you want your music to sell you better be willing to sell yourself according to contemporary ways. Which suck. Freddie would've probably started The Voice Kids Queen Edition where the winners will star in a kids version of a WWRY musical.. ..and we would all hate him for it. |
br5946 26.02.2012 07:55 |
Personally, I think that to keep themselves alive - no pun intended - Roger and Brian have to lower themselves to keep current. Roger did stand his ground on 'The Unblinking Eye (Everything Is Broken)', but still, it's a shock what they have to do. I'm not going against them, but nor am I justifying their decisions. The scabbard has been taken off the double-edged sword, people. Come to think of it, the scabbard was taken off a while back. |
