Hi folks i went to see Deep Purple play at Birmingham last week and bloody good they were, with a full Orchestra backing them. They went down a storm as did Cheap Trick who were the support band.I wonder how Queen would be playing with an Orchestra ?Any thoughts ??
I don't know why rock bands do this.
They spend the first part of their careers trashing this kind of music and those who play it and end up using them as their last ditch effort.
Every once in a while someone comes along, like Peter Gabriel, who makes it actually sound interesting, but 9 times out of 10 it sucks.

i don't know how you can say that in such a "matter of fact" manner...especially when it isn't a fact
Floyd, Genesis, Yes, the Nice, ELO (obvious), the faces, focus and especially purple - ALL either worked with classical arrangements/adaptations or orchestras... VERY early on their careers...hardly the actions of bands "trashing this kind of music"
in fact - purple - the subject of the thread - did their "concerto for group and orchestra" in 1969
lord has always loved classical music, and blackmore is heavily influenced by Beethoven...his rainbow and purple stuff reflects this
you can also throw in moody blues, sabbath, zeppelin, metallic and manfred mann's earthband..plus many other great and good...
it's usually the shit bands that cotton onto this idea late in their careers (Kiss)

The first music given to us by the 'classic' Deep Purple line-up was Concerto for Group and Orchestra. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Concerto_for_group_and_orchestra
I agree that most groups using a symphony orchestra are lame suckers trying to scrape the last cash from a dying career, but I don't think you can jump to that conclusion so easily when you're talking about Deep Purple. After all, Jon Lord IS primarily a classical musician.
