Ok just went to vote in round 2 and were is Marc Martel in the vocal round up???????? http://www.queenextravaganza.com/auditions/
Ah ok found him hes changed his audtion to Crazy little thing called love??
Hey there!
My name is Jason du Preez. Please check out my video for the second round in Guitarists and if you like, give me vote. :)
I had to play 'Keep Yourself Alive' link
Cheers, Jason
I think your vid is fairly good!
My concern is:
I am yet to see a guitarist that has really tried to emulate how BM would play.(same with the other instruments....) Call me a twat but, nobody that I have witnessed has really honed in on the style, proper sound, technique, phrasing etc.Forget the wanking or leg flailing......BM didn't do it like that!!
I am also astounded that a country so vastly populated as the US has narrowed the search down to this small and quite sad ( not in the performers, I mean numbers)quota. Could the US have offered a higher count than what was offered? My guess is that it was bad promotion? Maybe the rest of the countries weren't aware of this competition?
There have been a few good bassists, 1,maybe 2 ok drummers, a couple of quality singers and a good (very proficient) keyboard player.
Overall (except guitars) the talent is very good BUT my biggest gripe is that the players haven't really learned to play 'in-the-style-of' or like the particular member would play!!!
Opinions???
Sensible rationale critique welcomed........[/img]
@Ludwigs
My dear Ludwigs - Thanks for saying my video was 'fairly good' but I'm affraid to say the rest of your comments do fall into the 'twat' category slightly.
Your comments do sort of come accross as slightly sour towards the guitar players...are you a guitarist yourself by chance?? I absolutely agree with you that there are quite a few guitarists who made it through to round 2 who are definately not playing in the BM style - there even is a guy who does a back flip! Hmmm, though he is incredibly talented, I don't think he is right for this type of thing. Maybe a Van Halen tribute. I think he hurt himself!! lol
How do you know how hard I've tried to emulate BM's sound?? I can tell you that I've tried since I was a kid to do that - and it's not easy! The important thing is I tried my best - and that's all one can do.
If you are a guitarist, please share with me a video of yourself playing - so I can learn this BM style/phrasing/sound better. Afterall you seem to be preaching that you have it down pat~!
Here is another video of my playing: link
Hi Jason,
Nice job! I'm also one of the guitar auditioners, so I understand what you're going through right now! [/img] You're right, it's definitely a tall order trying to nail down BM's style of playing.
ludwigs, it's hard to say why there weren't more entries into this competition, out of all of N America. But, it is difficult these days to advertise something like this, and I don't really know how much effort was put into getting the word out far & wide. I'm subscribed to the Queen Online email list, so it just dropped right in my inbox. There are a great many Queen related things that fall flat in this country (US) simply because it is a huge country!
A far as the guitar playing, one thing you need to understand is that Roger mentioned the auditioners should show both their ability to play the music, with their own personal style to it, and that they were not lokking for "look-alikes" for this band. Personally, I think many of the entrants took that too far in the direction of playing it totally their own way, but that seems to be how some interpreted that, and from the YouTube comments, some people like what they've done, so it's all subjective. Jason, you & I both played it much closer to the original.
Anyway, here's my take on it. Please take a moment to vote, whether it's for me, Jason, backflip guy or whoever! link
And please spread the word, so that Roger's project gets the big publicity it deserves!
Cheers!

Jason and Steve,
I play the guitar a bit but I am not basing this opinion (of mine) on any ego at all and I certainly don't profess to being BM guru at all. I am familiar with his career, guitar and rigs etc over the years and been lucky to play the Old Lady and the rigs mentioned.... Someone can have a decent grasp and understanding of a players style even if they don't do it themselves.....can't they? Isn't that why judges are there. For opinions.
Most guitarists that I have mixed with have been great but I did work in a music shop/store and found that guitarists were full of ego and always had this competition element....."Oh, so-and- so is better than him, her etc....
I too, have seen many Queen tribute acts and know that as long as the guitarist wears a BM type wig and has a guitar that they care less if he was playing a Guyton into 3 AC 30's or even had the current Mike Hill rig that BM uses . (Another thing puzzling me is , why do most of the bands look like the Wembley gig? IMO that wasn't their best time..anyway, I digress)
If the band has a decent front man (ie Fred) then that seems to suffice. It's a sad but too true fact.
I do stand by my opinion that there hasn't really been as good a BM emulator on the auditions as say, a bassist, drummer, singer.. Jason, your suggestion of me posting up a video kinda makes me feel a slight ego issue yourself and that I have offended you? Do I need to validate MY view of things by showing me playing the guitar? If you feel I won't post one, for evidence of making my comments in-valid then you are free to think that way.
Steve, I 'm not totally understanding the criteria that RT is looking for. I heard about this via a link and simply watched all (some I had to instantly turn off) of the auditions and felt that (skill level aside) I didn't think there was a great BM type selection. My reckoning would be that it would be to play close in style/phrasing etc that BM would (or rest of band) as sounds could be sorted later on and add some personality into the piece. Apologies if I misunderstood the idea behind. I wouldn't have the botle or ability to audition so fair play to all that have pursued it!![/img]
( I believe Tristan has already been in the Canadian WWRY)

Part of my disappointment with the voting process is that we have to pick just one - that's a tall enough order for when we haven't yet been able to get a sense of the chemistry of any particular combination and might like to see 3 or 4 people get that opportunity. Also, the catalogue is amazingly eclectic, and we've only seen any one person do two songs. We saw how much of a leveler changing up songs for the singers was. It's also particularly challenging when I don't feel competent to pick out the best guitarist (or drummer etc.) - I'll recognize depthless delivery, flash over substance and useless embellishment in a singing voice but I won't necessarily be able to do that with an instrument. In short I don't know if I can judge good from really, really good necessarily. So why would Roger (or you) want me to vote? :) I'd love to see a brief review of the players from people who know the instruments. That Roy Ziv kid is one person who hasn't been mentioned here that is interesting to me. He looks like he'd be lots of fun to watch. His first audition seemed creative and technically proficient. But what do I know really? Maybe he sucks, relatively speaking.
