Average.
He used to be a great singer in the early to mid 90s. But these guys tour more than the average band - they've played well over 3,000 shows in 25 years. They're still a fantastic live band, but JBJ's voice is nothing like it used to be.
He was there while the song was being fine tuned by David and Freddie.
While David and Freddie were producing, singing, mixing, creating and detailing one of the biggest singles of the decade, Bon Jovi was probably plunging the loo. Which means that each one was working at his own level.

To be fair, he does sound better nowadays than in the mid 2000s!

Yep, I will give him that. He has probably done some intense vocal training.

Bon Jovi are an embarrasment to 'Rock' music

Listen to These Days - it's a very solid and introspective rock record.
Dry County and Just Older are great tracks as well. They do have a lot of good music. Not everything these guys have done is trite drivel.
Bon Jovi has always been trash. Might've put out music that could be described as 'competent' in their earlier years but even then it hasn't exactly aged well. They're definitely no Tom Petty ... and I don't even fuckin' LIKE Tom Petty.

I dont know about the mid2000s but if he sounds better now.. then the improvisation that i heard him make on youtube trying to imitate Freddie makes me wonder how he sounded..
