Just heard on a quiz show that Queen refused Sylvester Stallone the use of Anotherone Bites The Dust to be used for a Rocky film so he chose Eye Of The Tigar instead.Anyone know if thats true? Just dont remember hearing that before.
I guess it would have made sense as the title fits the film quite well.I dont think Id ever heard about it before but then again the memories not as good as it was lol
Actually, I think it's true, so Sylvester Stallone, absolute god that he is, approached Survivor and asked them to write Eye of the Tiger instead. I am a Rocky enthusasist, and I've done some research in my time.
I once read Stallone had used AOBTD as temporary soundtrack for his fights and considered using it for the movie but the producers didn't want to use a 2 year old song for the movie.
Interesting how the times change. See folks, the business isn't purely getting worse ! It's very common to use 30-40 year old songs in movies nowadays.
The way I see it, even today a 30-40 year old song has better chances to be included in a movie soundtrack (being percieved as a "Classic") than a 2-5 year old song (perceived as "Old news").
With the risk of oversimplifying, there's usually a 15-20 year period of time before something is considered a classic, as opposed to being simply old. In the 80's you would see references and nostalgia in reference to the 50's or 60's elements but a gross dislike for 70's music.
What's next? 90's Boy bands and Girl bands (re)gaining appreciation out of sheer nostalgia, that is what. Mark my words :).
Yes, there's some truth in this. I remember back in '82 at the time of Rocky 3 and consequently 'Eye of the Tiger', Survivor's lead singer being interviewed in a tabloid paper about the success of the track and i quote: 'We beat Queen out for this gig' - s**t , i thought, what a great opportunity for Queen to shine.
But you've got to remember, the Rocky franchise only hit the stratosphere after Rocky 3, (despite the original winning 'Best Picture' oscar) it was the third volume that alerted the masses to the fact that they were something special and so up to that point , Queen, like your average punter, were'nt clued up and probably were'nt aware that there was even a 'Rocky 2' - i cant even remember it being on general cinema release., whereas 3 , was a highly promoted cinema smash and in no small part down to Survivors sterling effort .
Perhaps in retrospect, Queen might have relished the opportunity.

Those were my thoughts exactly. Songs are typically used to communicate temporal aspects of setting and/or to set a mood. A song just old enough to be dated but not old enough to be classic might succeed in setting a mood, but at the risk of making a movie intended to be experienced in the present seem stale. I don't think most producers/directors would risk it.
If the other story is true - that Queen prevented it from being included, and that Survivor specifically wrote the song for the movie at Stallone's request - I wonder what that tiny tweak to pop culture changed. Is 'Eye of the Tiger' significant enough as a work that it's worth having it be at what most of us Queen fans might think of as a sacrifice of sorts? The decision likely subtly reshaped both the Rocky and Queen franchises. I guess we'll never know quite how, but it's interesting to ponder.

The original Rocky won an Oscar.
Someone mentioned here that Stallone is related to someone in Survivor so nepotism may have played a part.
