Hi! I've been compiling a multi-source video of Keep Yourself Alive, Brewer Street version, and the sources that I've used this far are the old youtube download (that now since long has been removed), the magic years and queen rocks version. My questions are: Does any more clips of this video exist, even if it's just a few seconds, and does a better quality version of the magic years exist? screenshot of the magic years in my possession: link regard teddi2002 |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't this completely released on the Box of Flix set in 1991...? |
pittrek 28.06.2011 09:55 |
No, it wasn't. Only Liar from the Brewer Street video session was released |
teddi2002 29.06.2011 14:53 |
Do any of you know any more documentaries or video compilations that contains anything from this video? |

Actually, that and every other clip of this video on youtube comes from the old youtube upload and are downloaded with quite a bad video format convertion, so their quality are quite worse than the file that I downloaded, since I didn't convert the file and kept the flv-file. Anyway, thank you for trying to help. |

Teddi, the screenshot of KYA you have is the Mike Mansfield version from St.Johns Wood Studios and not the Brewer Street Studios video by Bruce Gowers. The only version that hasn't been officially released in it's entirety is the MM version of KYA. |
teddi2002 30.06.2011 06:25 |
According to this, link Mike Mansfield directed the first video at brewer street, and the released video (more dark-lit) was filmed at St Johns Woods Studios. However, I trust your information, although I've never heard it before. My screenshot is from the magic years documentary. I don't know if I misunderstood your reply, but you seem to imply a third video directed by Bruce Gowers? Anyway, it's the video that I took the screenshot from that I've been compiling clips from, and if I've been misinformed, please let me know. regards teddi2002 |

Because all the sources I read (I think including GVH 1DVD) claim that the "orange" videos are from Brewer Street Studios and the "violet" videos are from St. Johns Wood Studios |

Here I upload photographs of the booklets of both box of flix and greatest video hits I. Although Keep Yourself Alive is the same video in both versions, Liar is not. The information in the booklets is somewhat confusing. Box of Flix booklet: link Greatest Video Hits I booklet: link |

Old thread I know. There is another 'edit' on the 'Queen Rocks' laser disc that has clips of both Brewer St, St Johns Wood and the original Old Grey Whistle Test BBC archives film. |

FYI, The booklet in my DVD copy states that both the Bruce Gowers videos where recorded at BREWER STREET. |

I'm with Gary on this one. |

Would be nice to see this video in nice quality on the official channel. |

the GVH versions is much better, for a future box set for queen videos, the two versions of KYA and liar, will be on the box, the GVH versions will be on the principal disc, and the alternative, the real first version, on the alternative versions disc |

I have spent months on this particular subject trying to find the correct info on these first four videos the band recorded. I came to the conclusion that most of the original info about these videos that feature in various long form videos are incorrect, as well as stating one of the venues incorrectly too. |
cmsdrums 18.02.2013 02:47 |
Who was responsible for the original incorrect info Gary, and do we know what research they did to come to their (incorrect) inclusions? Cheers |
. 18.02.2013 04:02 |
I don't think we will get a fess up. |

Because I have done a lot of work on this subject it is going to be included in the Queen Live book. |
. 18.02.2013 11:45 |
Are you trying to tell us something Gary? |
cmsdrums 18.02.2013 12:04 |
Why would a mimed video shoot be included in a queen live book?? |
. 18.02.2013 12:15 |
Good question. |
. 21.02.2013 13:17 |
Any answer Gary? |
. 16.10.2013 09:44 |
Sadly we still don't get to see the original promos for KYA or Liar on the Queen official channel. |
Mkls 17.10.2013 07:50 |
ok so you have probably seen all the outtakes , so the big research is about reading what the clapper said about the studio and the date of the filming - and as always its top secret business confidential information which studio was used until the 5th update of Queen Live appears.... with all my respect... i rather dont say anything |
. 17.10.2013 09:36 |
Has anyone else seen the outtakes? |
Mr.QueenFan 17.10.2013 09:52 |
So, GT let me see if i can understand you: - We have the wrong information on the booklets of the products we've bought in the past - Flix, DVD's etc. - You've acknowledged that the information on the booklets it's wrong; - We ask you for the CORRECT information, because we want to label things in the correct way- like it should have been from the beginning. We do this in a respectful way; - And what do you say? "I've donne a lot of work on this subject, it's going to be included in the book" - MEANING--- Want answers? Just buy the book when it comes out! Does this sounds nice to you on a business perspective? Do you think this is the way to treat people who bought the products with the wrong information in the first place? A respectful organization would give the information for free with the apologies to all fans who bought the product with the wrong info. This is what companies with respectful businesses do. To make people buy another product so they can have access to information that should already be theirs it's a very wrong business move. It shows disrespect for customers. |
. 17.10.2013 14:13 |
We now how the correct info, St. John's Wood = White stage. |
slithybill 20.10.2013 02:06 |
I know this doesn't help clarify anything about location but Norman Sheffield states in "Life on Two Legs" that Mansfield "had painted the whole stage a bright white" for the first video shoot. Gowers reshot them later with "smoke effects and darker lighting." Unfortunately he doesn't mention filming location, other than to say that Trilion Video (Trident's video subsidiary) were based at Shepperton film studios. Also, they made these "promotional films" to send to Elektra in the US. |
. 20.10.2013 03:19 |
Thanks for that info. |

The Live book is a completely new book and surpasses what has gone before, so nobody is really buying it again. We would like a lot of the info we have found to be exclusive for the new edition and the dates/venues for the making of these promo videos are part of that. The reason we touch on these videos is that they are a major event in Queen's history and their formative years and as the book is placed in date/month/year order, then these four video appearances will be included in their respective parts of the book. There are some other 'non-live' stories and information to give the book a nice flow and give the book some context of what the band got up to around their live tours. Like most product that has been released before, errors are made and mistakes in text do happen, but like all humans we strive to do it better. We hope that this book on their live (and video) appearances is the best it can be and is delivered with all the new and corrected information inside, and looks as good as we think it deserves. |

Is it just me, or is the audio to this version a different mix to the standard album version? More strident harmonies and extra vocal ad-libs? |

I know this must seem really off to post something to a topic that hasn't been touched for several months, but I'm in need of a favor. Just finally got around to joining the forum a little while ago as I've been searching high and low for awhile now for original 576p 25i copies of the various Keep Yourself Alive promo videos. I grabbed the Box of Flix, I've had the cropped DVDs, and I was a little disappointed to see they both contain the same "dark stage" versions of KYA. (At least I have the other videos uncropped now, and that other take of Killer Queen) But I noticed on YouTube (where quality of frames aren't the main concern) there's a video that thanks to a google search led here to this very topic. So am I clutching at straws or not? Does the owner of the original promo reside here, or should I look elsewhere? |
