This is the completist in me talking here.. but hopefully this will lead to a good discussion. There isn't a ton of audio and video from Queen at soundchecks, but luckily there is a lot more than Led Zeppelin for example, a band with far more unreleased audio and video available overall (and they lasted about half as long as Queen). So here's what we've got for Queen - pictures: Ottawa 1-25-77 Buenos Aires 2-26-81 (a couple days before the first concert) Sao Paulo 3-20-81 Puebla 10-17-81 Dallas 8-21-82 Budapest 7-27-86 audio: Oxford 11-20-73 Tokyo 2-18-81 Puebla 10-17-81 Birmingham 9-2-84 video footage: New York 2-5-76 Houston 12-11-77 - just unveiled at the Stormtroopers exhibition Rotterdam 1-29-79 Munich 2-10-79 (or possibly 2-11-79) Poitiers 2-25-79 Bristol 12-9-79 (the BBC video of Crazy Little Thing Called Love is from soundcheck, yes?) Caracas 9-27-81 Zurich 4-16-82 Paris 6-14-86 (with the audio replaced by the studio versions of One Vision and TYMD) footage that is purported to exist, but I haven't seen: Buenos Aires 81 - probably the March 1 show Sao Paulo 3-20-81 Rio 1-8-85 - I have heard audio of the soundcheck, which is from a TV report Wembley 7-12-86 - apparently from Thames News Any comments, additions, amendments .. ? |

I have definitely seen the Rio footage somewhere. Maybe even on YouTube already ? |
pittrek 29.03.2011 00:58 |
Does anybody here have the full GLOBO TV broadcast ? |
maxpower 29.03.2011 04:08 |
God those Rio shows were bad, even in that rehearsal Freddie's voice is cracking on I Want To Break Free |

Nice to see this footage... The one I've seen (only a 5 second snipped on a TV show here in Brazil) is in daylight and shows Freddie wearing a hat... This one's at night... I'm ever since (2006) trying to get that tv show that showed that 5 second snippet (I think it was TV Pirata, a comedy show - on a sketch about "Roça In Rio" - which in english would be something like "Country In Rio" instead of Rock)... |

Thanks for the links, Peter. Indeed, an uncut copy on DVD would be great. And who is that wonderful drummer with Whitesnake in 1985? :-) |

@ Sir GH: I think the drummer was Cozy Powell. " |

Interesting how all of the bands used Queen's lighting rig for the festival... |

Anyone know which show this soundcheck pic is from .. ? It's no later than 82 .. I can tell that much. |
The Real Wizard 08.04.2011 13:10 |
And another ... somewhere between 84-86. |
The Real Wizard 08.04.2011 13:17 |
This narrows down the first pic (1100081527602291.jpg) to late 80 or 81... it's from the same date, and you can see the second synth that Brian used on Flash (which is perhaps even the same one that Freddie used for Vultan's Theme in Japan 81). |

Sir GH wrote: Anyone know which show this soundcheck pic is from .. ? It's no later than 82 .. I can tell that much. ----------------------- Must be either 1980 or 1981. Roger's drumkit gave it away. |
GT 08.04.2011 13:58 |
The first pic is in Japan 1981 and the second pic is from Europe 1986. |
GT 08.04.2011 14:00 |
The third pic is also from Japan 1981. |

The Real Wizard 08.04.2011 14:43 |
Cool, thanks Gary ! I suspected it was Japan 81. |

Soundchecks can be interesting of course, but what I would rather love to hear are rehearsals for tours. When they were trying out new songs and especially those, that did not find their way on the final set lists. Is there anything known about those rehearsals? Or which songs they tried and then dropped? It's so strange that so many songs never found their way into the live-sets even though they should have been playable as a four-piece or five piece line-up. |
The Real Wizard 09.04.2011 12:58 |
Indeed, little is known about rehearsals. A bit of rehearsal footage from November 1977 was shown at the Stormtroopers exhibition, and that's all we've ever seen or heard. The only other tidbits I'm aware of are - in 1974 they tried rehearsing all of The March Of The Black Queen and gave up. Deacon later said it was too difficult. And in early 1977 they rehearsed Long Away but it didn't work out either. A tape of this apparently exists, complete with the ensuing band argument. |
Planetgurl 09.04.2011 16:58 |
I know they soundchecked with Mustapha at Manchester in 1986 :-) |

Or as they did it with "39" pass it over to Freddie? |
The Real Wizard 10.04.2011 22:31 |
I have no idea. But I'd assume it was Freddie, as Brian has stated that he wasn't keen on singing at all on stage in those days due to confidence issues, never mind singing lead ! |

Has anyone got a bigger version of this picture? - link |
YannickJoker 14.04.2011 00:16 |

Sao Paulo soundcheck footage - link It was apparently broadcast on Argentinian TV. So it looks like there is no Buenos Aires soundcheck footage... it was probably just this footage mislabeled as Argentina. |
MERQRY 15.04.2011 19:08 |
Yes, this (The sao pablo soundcheck) was broadcasted in argentine tv as part of special tv show with footage of the nights in buenos aires and some interviews with the band in a press conference... on fact the host in this video is Juan Carlos Badia the same guy that spoke throught all the buenos aires footage... The soundcheck is from the first night in brazil i'm 100% sure cause the host said it... The footage throught the soundcheck is of course from the 1st march argentine show. |
