I am just curious on opinions, I want to track down and listen to what seems to be the MASS opinion, the 'best' concert (I say it like so since the best might not be someone elses best due to tracklist or place) |
YannickJoker 07.03.2011 17:45 |
I would say Houston 1977. |
spaceboy1972 07.03.2011 17:49 |
Hmm - Hammersmith Odeon 26/12/1979 |

First night in Paris, 1979 with Dreamer's Ball, If You Can't Beat Them, Mustapha, Spread Your Wings.....great setlist, great performance. |
spandan 07.03.2011 18:21 |
I'd go for these performance wise: Tokyo 1st May 1975 recording quality wise: Boston 30th Jan 1976 popularity wise: Hammersmith Odeon 14th Dec 1975 |
spandan 07.03.2011 19:37 |
* it is London (Hammersmith Odeon) 24th Dec 1975 popularity wise, sorry for the typo Freddie's vocal performance wise it has got to be Newcastle 1979. |
jamster1111 07.03.2011 20:42 |
Definitely Newcastle 12/4/1979...though there are plenty of recordings we haven't heard that could easily top that gig. |

My vote goes for any performance on the A Night At The Opera tour. They had come off their creative peak, and were completely focused on the music and minimally focused on the visuals. Boston 76 is an easy pick because of the quality of the recording, but every show was probably about as good. |

Seems most people are picking bootleg shows or concerts available on video but for me it was when I saw them in Providence in 78 even though there were a few technical problems with the lights that night. |

Second and third night in Paris 1979. Very good shows and still are ones of my favourites! |
Hangman_96 08.03.2011 05:46 |
Jazz 78, can you please tell more about that gig in Providence 1978? |

Just love the performance and it's nice that the aforementioned songs were part of the setlist. |

Lostman wants to know about my first rock concert and that was Queen in Providence in 1978. My cousin Joe was their lighting director at the time and I was HOOKED on this band!!! My father and my aunt took me and my firend Richard came with us. We had seats on Brian's side of the stage about eye level with them and pretty damn close to the riser Freddie would use throughout the night. When we got to the Civic Center I saw above the stage a smaller platform with a smaller drumkit on it. I thought to myself, "how are they going to get up there to play?" Remember, I was 14 and totally naive. We took our seats and watched the goings on beforehand. frisbees being tossed, green glowsticks being thrown etc. It was so exciting as to what I waiting for and didn't know what an impact it would make on me! Before the show we saw Joe standinig near Brian's mic with a roadie. Not sure why he was on the stage but there he was. My father sees him and shouts his name. Out of 14,000 people in the place Joe looks up and notices us. What are the chances people? Unfortunately he couldn't come over to us as he was working but he did wave to us. Anyway, the lights go down and the place went crazy! Then as we all know with the available footage we all see the pre-recorded taped intro begins with the thunderclaps and the lights flashing to simulate lightning. The stage was covered with smoke and then Brian opened the show with the first chords. For those of you that never went to those early shows, they were loud!!! I mean, that the guitar, bass and drums really went right through you. The PA was flown above the stage and we were right under it. I also didn't know what that funny smell was and why people kept sharing "cigarettes" but boy do I know now! I went to school the next day smelling of reefer. I'm shocked I didn't get busted! The show was just mindblowing for me. I mean, just a few hours earlier I was at home staring at them on my walls and now they're in front of me singinig Somebody to Love and all my favorites. At one point in the show Freddie tossed the mic into the audience and let them shout a few things. This was also done and can be heard the following show in New York. In fact, for those of you that have that gig it's an exact replica of what I saw and heard in Providence. But the one thing that really stuck out was that after one of the songs Freddie shouted, "these lights suck" into the mic. This was confusing because I knew that Joe was running the lights and that's kind of picking on family. But after talking with Joe years later he said there were problems with the rig that night and it wasn't uncommon fro Fred, as he always called him, to sometimes comment from the stage. In fact, he recently told me that when they played in Long Island a few nights later Freddie did it again. Which can be heard on the boot of that show. I think it was after Fat Bottomed Girls and Freddie siad, let's have some fucking lights! Ok he's gonna be murdered tomorrow." Upon hearing this, Stickells went backstage after the show and chewed out the band saying they are never to berate the crew onstage again. And like Joe told me that if there were any problems they would take care of it. I mentioned Chicago a few weeks later when they had to leave the stage.for several minutes and came back. Joe said he didn't dare say anyting from the stage. Back to the show... FINALLY I got to see the acoustic stage lowered from the ceiling after they finished Spread Your Wings and the band did the acoustic set. The middle section of '39 when the 3 of them do the harmony section sounded weird live but I think they nailed it that night with Roger hitting those high notes. My mind is a little blurry from this point on but I remember we decided to leave as the encores were about to begin. We wanted to beat the traffic home! So as we began to make our way out of the arena I turned around to see the lights flashing to Sheer Heart Attack. This show was so loud that even the cotton balls my aunt gave me to put in my ears didn't help. No matter how far I stuffed them in there! Sorry for being so long winded but this was an experience I'll never forget!!! If you go to Sir GH's site at queenlive.ca you'll see my photos he posted from that gig. 11/14/78. Check it out and tell Bob I said hello. |

Thank you very much, Nino! This is awesome story! I wish I'd been born somewhere in the 60's and so I could take tickets to the countries where Queen performed and saw them live, but unfortunately, I was born too late (in 1996). I've heard that the audience recording from that Providence gig exists in excellent quality, I think it's worth listening to this one! |

Yes, there is a recording of that Providence gig and I have a photo of the tape and tried to contact the people that currently have it, thanks to Bob, but they never got back to me. So it apparently does exist. And you don't want to have been born back then Lostman... you'd be old like me now. 45 and counting! |
Hangman_96 08.03.2011 16:31 |
Can you please send me a pic of that tape? Or just contact me? I've sent you a PM with my e-mail address. |

For me the best gigs I saw were those of the Crazy Tour of 1979 with Alexander Palace being the stand out by far - if only the band would release more of the footage. What I would really love to hear is one of the really early college gigs - unbelievably a friend of mine saw them way before they became a recording band and he isn't even a fan of the band - kinda sucks really and I am not even slightly green with envy - honest |
