LOL, I have to say, so far it seems the only consensus on the heaviest song is that everyone has a different idea of what it is! This cracks me up, but it's what I love about posting on forums like these, the breadth of perspective. I'm still sticking with Ogre Battle, but I can see why songs like White Man and Hitman were included--I totally forgot about those, believe it or not. So thanks again, J |

I couldn't put any in an order, especially an order of heaviness, but I'll try to put down some of the heaviest. Tie Your Mother Down - That opening riff is one of THE rock riffs! White Man - Just a pure blast of almost incoherent headbanging. No more needs to be said. Now I'm Here because its a heavy metal classic. End of. Doin' Alright [Queen version] - Total forerunner to the heavy section of Bohemian in its hard bits. Put Out The Fire - clear and raw. Stone Cold Crazy - first thrash metal song... I Was Born to Love You [Queen version] - Brian and Roger run riot transforming the pop-rock approach into hard rock. It's A Beautiful Day (Reprise) - The ambient opener flipped upside-down into a raging closer. Was It All Worth It - Queen knew they had to end the eighties with a reasonably heavy song and did so marvellously. Prophet's Song to an extent because there is a fair amount of heavy stuff embedded in the progness. Sweet Lady - a metal riff in waltz time? Goddamn it Brian. And yet he churned out a pure spearhead of bombast. Robbery - this demo gave Brian to unleash his godly power at the axe. Perfect for air-guitarring too. And if non-Queen ventures are allowed, I would note Brian's cover of One Rainy Wish, China Belle, Let Me Out and Resurrection. The latter is an andrenaline rush for sure! The Cross also belted out a few heavy ones, so Penetration Guru, Rough Justice and the CD bonus cover of Foxy Lady are there too in my opinion. |

The early stuff is the heaviest......The 80's heavier stuff sounded more commercial. queen at their heaviest was live in the 74 to 77 era. The studio stuff i think great king Rat, Liar, Modern times rock n roll, Orge Battle, Brighton Rock, tenament funster, flick of the wrist, Stoned cold crazy (especiall;y live), Death on Two legs, tie your mother down, it's late, sheer Heart attack, Dead On Time. after 1980 I think The hitman is heavy. songs like Headlong and I want it all are bit commercial to be compared with the early stuff. |

I see that some Queen fans like to say that Stoned Cold Crazy was the first thrash song....Of course that's not true. It does have a thrashy riff, but bands already started playing fast riffs by the time Stoned cold came out, Besides, i think modern times rock N roll was just as thrashy and came out a year earlier. Live queen were no doubt one of the heaviest bands of their time. Stoned cold Crazy was even heavier live. A shame general rock fans don't know how heavy Queen were. |

Isn't Sheer Heart Attack (the song) more a punk song than a heavy song? |
PrimeJiveUSA 08.03.2011 19:49 |
Well, I was the first to reply with SHA...no big dea(lol)l it's rather obvious, imo. I AM surprised that people many can't see the OTHER obvious track "Gimme The Prize". YES...it's '80's Queen...but c'mon...it's heavy like no other! It doesn't matter if you don't like it(many don't, but I do!)...it's the heaviest thing they have done(besides SHA). |
mike hunt 09.03.2011 00:52 |
Yea, Giime the prize is the heaviest song queen did in the 80's. I like the song. Princess of the universe is also pretty heavy, but the early stuff was so raw. The first album is heaviest of their career. Not the most original sounding Queen album, but the heaviest for sure. that's why guy's like Dave Groghl, Rob Halford and David Lee Roth mentioned it as their favorite. |
PrimeJiveUSA 09.03.2011 10:33 |
Mike, I think the debut album is very original. It's just that the production standards were(understandably) lower than subsequent albums. Wow....didn't even know that David Lee Roth had even liked Queen! With all due respect, I don't see how Queen I is any heavier than SHA or NOTW. |

Wow....didn't even know that David Lee Roth had even liked Queen! With all due respect, I don't see how Queen I is any heavier than SHA or NOTW. the debute album is awsome, one of my favs, but i don't think they found the Queen sound yet. As a whole that is, yea it did have some songs like Fairy king that sounded only like queen. David lee roth had a radio show here in New york a few years back and mentioned queen as one of his all time favorites, and calling freddie one of the best singer's ever. He reviewed the first album, Gave a rave review of it, and also said Eddie Van halen was a big fan who was Influenced by that early stuff. NOTW had some heavy moments, but overall wasn't as heavy as the first record. Songs like Who Needs you, All dead, Melancholoy blues , champions wern't all that heavy. all amazing songs of course, but if we're talking heavy only a few stand up. SHA, the first side is heavy as anything they ever did, but not as much on the second side, aside from Stone cold crazy. The first album almost every song was heavy. Even the ballad 'Doing Alright' had some of the heaviest bits they ever did. |
PrimeJiveUSA 09.03.2011 13:05 |
Mike...good response! Well, now that you broke it down like that...I have to agree with you! That's really cool about DLR and EVH...I knew that Eddie was a friend of Brian's, but didn't know if he was really a fan or not. Van Halen with DLR is one of my favorite bands, and DLR is truly one of the great frontmans of rock. |

Modern Times Rock N Roll is fast, but....heavy? Tear It Up and Put Out The Fire are heavy but not fast Ogre Battle, Dead On Time, or Sheer Heart Attack are my picks, but the Metallica version of Stone Cold Crazy might be the winner. Flick Of The Wrist kinda has that heaviness too... |

Well, i would put "Stone Cold Crazy" right behind "Sheer Heart Attack" and "Gimme The Prize". "White Man" follows at #4. |
Thistle 10.03.2011 20:05 |
I don't really know about the heaviest, but the lightest is "Dear Friends" as it only has a few lines and a bit of piano. Or maybe the Piano contributed to it being heavier than I first thought. |

I'd say Gimme the Prize is up there as well, and I wanna thank you guys for reminding me of it! FotW has some heavy spots in it, which I like, but it's not heavy from beginning to end--I'd say it's about as heavy as Keep Yourself Alive. Brighton Rock, I can't make up my mind about it? Put Out the Fire I don't think is heavy really at all. As much as I like Tear It Up because it's funny, it is harder rock for 80's Queen but I think of it as just loud rather than truly heavy. I guess it's a matter of personal taste. That's my two cents. J |
gothmog 11.03.2011 09:16 |
Sheer heart attack is not heavy at all; it's just fast and loud punk, I think.. I guess Ogre Battle(maybe an origin of epic metal) or Gimme the prize is the heaviest. |

The rest of my list includes: Modern times rock and roll sweet lady liar Gimme the prize tear it up Hammer to fall Brighton rock (off of live killers) Get down make love (from live at the bowl) These are just the ones I always thought of as heavy hits. I'm sure there are others that would qualify! In 1975 I was center stage and in the third row when Queen started their show with Procession. Freddie rose out of the fog on the first note of Father to Son!The stage exploded in sound and I was hooked for life! I was also deaf for three days after the show but wow, what a show! Tommy |

Absolutely White Man. It is out and out pure heavy rock. The brilliance of it is that they're British and they did a song about the injustice done to the American Indians. Don't know why it never got the recognition it deserved. Maybe only Americans could appreciate it, it should have gone over much better here. Whether or not other countries could relate, it's just a great rock song. |

Ask Leonard Peltier if it was a good idea to use the bullet. Please engage brain before typing. And yes, back to the music. Best idea I've heard since the last time someone said that. |
matt z 05.05.2012 17:44 |
Yeah, he was involved with that, but several witnesses (some who would have reason to be biased towards Peltier) allege that one of the agents was taken out by his own "sides" fire...presumably accidentally. Its really a grim expression, prob expounding on the mao tse tung one "political power grows out of the barrel of a gun" Its meant metaphorically to a brain, literally to mercenaries. The physical threat of violence either through physical, removal, ostricism or deprivation of a physical economy via imprisonment or poverty... Those are all examples of political power via the threat of force. To make light of it and decide not to engage further, I'll just say "do you remember the scene in Monty Python's HOLY GRAIL ...where the groveling peasant states "see! See the violence inherent in the system!" Reduced to a joke its funny, but in reality its not. While a "message" is very much worthwhile, it doesn't do much. It DOES however, plant seeds of opposing viewpoints and wisdom; I like to think they Pythons have done much for that aim. |
waunakonor 05.05.2012 22:01 |
I agree that talking about bad stuff is definitely not helping anything get better, but what can we do? Go back in time and tell the colonists to respect the Native Americans? On a similar note, I like how Queen rarely tries to make an actual statement, but when they do they to really make a point out of it (Death on Two Legs is a big FU to the delightful motherf**ker it's dedicated to; White Man, as previously stated; several anti-punk-rock songs on News of the World, namely Sheer Heart Attack, Fight From the Inside, and Sleeping on the Sidewalk). It makes the messages much more prominent, because they've stated before that they're "not a political band." Also, more on-topic, I don't know why no one's mentioned it yet, but Dear Friends is quite worthy of consideration. It kind of blew my mind the first time I listened to it. |
Queen4ever13 07.05.2012 12:10 |
White Man is definitely a reminder that Americans should be ashamed of ourselves to this very day. It states a fact and it's a great song. |

thanks to everyone that posted here, I've been revisiting Queen lately was sitting around think I wish someone compiled a heaviest Queen songs CD, The Hitman and Gimme the prize are awesome, I'm working my way through the rest of the list. Brian is such an excellent soloist when it comes to guitar solos I would put Dragon Attack in there too |

Sheer Heart Attack. When I first heard the squealing high pitches towards the end I was like, WTF?! The Hitman is another one, along with Tie Your Mother Down. |

Interesting that Machines and Tear it up aren't mentioned, from the 80's I think these are the heaviest along with Hitman. I go crazy is nice too. Dead on time and Tie your mother down are the greatest for me. Son and Daughter is very very good in heaviness. Flick of the wrist too. We will rock you fast as well. White man is intense, but not heavy. SHA is fast and noisy, not heavy. The other ones aren't exactly what I'd call heavy. |
tomchristie22 07.07.2012 20:44 |
Really? I'll be honest, I don't even remember how Machines goes, I've hardly listened to it all the way through. But Tear It Up has a very clear 80's production style, which in my opinion makes it sound pretty un-heavy. |

koldweather123 10.07.2012 13:33 |
Another song that seems to have been totally overlooked IMO is We Will Rock You. I think its popularity has led people to overlook how heavy that song could sound. Its so simple but its very punchy, you've got that simple but powerful beat that is amplified in a live setting and a great solo. The lyrics are pretty strong IMO as well. There are heavier songs of course (White Man, It's late, Hitman, Gimme the Prize, flick of the wrist, I could go on) but WWRY does seem to have been overlooked a little here so I thought I'd give it some love. |

In order, album by album, here are the songs I think are the "heaviest" on each: [listu] [li]Queen = Great King Rat (the solo section in Jesus is fantastic) [li]Queen II = Ogre Battle [li]Sheer Heart Attack = Brighton Rock [li]A Night At The Opera = The Prophets Song (more so for it's darkness) [li]A Day At The Races = Tie Your Mother Down [li]News Of The World = Sheer Heart Attack [li]Jazz = Let Me Entertain You (just thunderous! - listen with a good set of earphones) [li]The Game = Dragon Attack [li]Hot Space = Put Out The Fire [li]The Works = Machines (very underrated) [li]A Kind Of Magic = Gimme The Prize [li]The Miracle = Headlong [li]Innuendo = Hitman (solo section of Innuendo is genius) [li]Made In Heaven = Nothing really heavy here [li]My pick of them all is Sheer Heart Attack from New of the World - just a killer song and live it's nuts!! The Miracle = Headlong]Headlong was an Innuendo song ;) As for mine, I'd probably say it's between The Hitman, I Want It All, and Was It All Worth It. |

Really? They're lullabies compared to Father To Son, Prophet's Song and White Man. |

I would say Hangman, but for released stuff... Eemh... Some stuff on Queen I and The miracle are super heavy. I am not an expert but i think the heaviest is "Gimme the prize" or "I want it alll" Also, to name a few more "Ogre battle" And "Death on two legs" |
