Radio Ga Ga live aid. Hands down. |
Gregsynth 29.11.2010 14:25 |
Yeah, that Radio Ga Ga from Live Aid is ridiculous! Here's another nominee for best live performance of a Queen song: It's A Hard Life from Brussels 1984 (It's the closest you'll get to the studio version)! |

Freddie shows a lot of energy during the Hammer to Fall performance at Wembley but i do love Radio Gaga and Crazy Little Thing Called Love at Live Aid I would also put Somebody To Love and Play The Game from Live At The Bowl up near the top as well |

yeah, not half ! - even though most fans were still in shock at the slant towards 'Funk', there was simply nobody on the planet to come up with this performance. Absolutely brilliant, and the cheek of Freddie vocalizing the trumpet parts- i thought the musicians unions would have been down on him like a ton of bricks. |

The other thing I remember is £5 for a carton of orange juice. Yes 5 - in 1982!! |

Staying Power is much more awesome on Leeds '82 than on Milton Keynes '82. That's one heck of a song live. Play the game is also better on Leeds '82 show, heck I also prefer Somebody to love from this show. Queen's 80's song in particular were much better live (Hot Space songs in particular). I also love these: Great King Rat performed in full. 1st May 1975 Tokyo, Japan. Dragon Attack. This I love from Milton Keynes '82. Stone Cold Crazy. Rainbow '75. Ogre Battle. Hammersmith '79. White Man. Earl's Court '77. |

To Gregsynth: I think that Freddie in Stuttgart 84' nailed "searching for love..." in contrast to Brussels which is an excellent performence if you compare the reproduction of the song sections etc. than Brussels is like 1:1 except for the one small minus mentioned. |
lifetimefanofqueen 01.12.2010 12:56 |
who wants to ive forever live in budapest, so emotional :( makes me cry when i think of how freddie was ill and brian was depressed (hence the song) its very sad, wanna give them both a biiig hug |
Gregsynth 01.12.2010 13:29 |
The Brussels and Stuttgart performances of Somebody To Love are some of the best on the tour (along with Dublin and Tokyo). The Brussels version sounds like a Hot Space version (timbre and phrasing wise), while Stuttgart has beastly power! As for Staying Power: Milton Keynes by far, is the best: Freddie nails ALL the notes in the verses (the only time he ever did that), and is the closest you are going to get to the studio version! |

I agree that fred nailed it completely - and the whole band were just so spot on. At the end of the song I got the impression that everyone had been won over by that performance. "F**king amazing" was the repeated phrase from people around me - I'll never forget it. As for it being close to the studio version I'm presuming you just mean Fred as it's clearly arranged very differently. I never worried about Fred hitting all the notes as per the recording - let's face it - he had the kind of voice which could tire easily as he was almost always using his full pitch at least on the high energy numbers. I just wanted him to sing it like he meant it and he was good at that. |
Gregsynth 01.12.2010 15:07 |
Yeah, I was just mentioning Freddie's vocal performance on the song :D On all the other performances of the song, Freddie would either change the verses' notes around, or miss the notes (it's a very difficult song to sing). At Milton Keynes, he went for it all--and nailed it! I wish his voice was still tops after Milton Keynes, though! |

Quite possibly the best version but he is way off in the chorus'. The only one he gets is the very first one. |

Regardless of any pitch problems (I probably have to go back and analyze the song), it's still the best version of the song: I have never heard any other version where he goes for all the B4s in the "I wonder when" parts. For laughs, the worst version is from 4/17/1982 (2nd Zurich) :D |
Gregsynth 02.12.2010 11:25 |
OK, I just listened to the chorus parts (all the "I wonder When" lines). All the B4s are fine. The only parts that he's "off" on are those sustained notes after them (Make It or the "shake it" lines). But he brings them back up to the original pitch towards the end. They aren't even that off (maybe 15 cents at most). |
Gregsynth 02.12.2010 13:06 |
Now that we've got Staying Power out of the way (lol), here's another "best live performance" of a song: We Are The Champions from Live Aid Reasons: 1. Hits both Bb4s before the chorus (though he had to adjust the pitch on the 1st one) 2. Gets the C5 in the first chorus 3. Gets all the chorus notes (only time he ever does that) |

Just the fact that they were playing it for the first time since god knows when - everyone jumped 6 six feet into the air on hearing the intro. By the way Greg, is it you that put the mini show from the 'Champions' shoot up on youtube ? if so thanks - that's genuinely interesting and a good performance to boot. I don't know about anyone else but frankly I can't be bothered to trawl through the net listening to half baked recordings from every concert they ever played - for me, the official releases are enough but that is a real find - cheers. |

Most of the songs performances listed here are among my favourites (Hammer To Fall at Wembley '86, Radio Ga Ga/ CLTCL at Live Aid, Somebody To Love at MK Bowl etc etc) but my stand-alone favourite is Save Me from Montreal '81. That is the best Freddie live vocal EVER! |

I don't think Ogre Battle was ever played at Hammersmith in '79 though, and the '75 version I didn't think was that good, the vocal harmonines were off (probably because of how sick Freddie and Brian were). My pick for best performance of that song was in Boston, Jan 30, '76. My vote for best Queen song played live, probably Radio Gaga at Live Aid, '85. I think it was probably better than Hendrix at Woodstock--but I could be a bit biased! ;) J |

Gets all the chorus notes (only time he ever does that) Live Aid was terrific on a whole number of levels, not the least of which was hitting all those hard-to-hit notes in WATC. I have to say my favorite version of the song though, was probably at Wembley '86. Wembley was something of a mixed bag in terms of Freddie's voice I know, but I love his power and phrasing much more than I do in other versions. It's just incredible, particularly his phrasing in the "fightiiiiing to the end." He also personalized the song on that last "my friends", which I loved. Greg you know way more about pitch than I do, which do you think was the finest version of Ogre Battle? It just seemed hit or miss whether the band would get all those harmonies right in a live performance. J |
Gregsynth 27.01.2011 16:35 |
There's two versions that spring to mind: Boston 1976, and Birmingham 1973. The whole band absolutely nail the song! |
Jasonite 27.01.2011 22:52 |
Yeah, that Boston performance has been my favorite for a while, thanks for exposing me to the Birmingham one though! For stuff like Lap of the Gods Revisited, the only versions I've really liked live were the Rainbow in '74, and some of his fun variations on it during the Magic Tour. Here's a set of tougher songs: March of the Black Queen? I have the Boston '76 version of that medley, anyone have a version they prefer over this? Also, one of the big daddies: Liar! Boston '76 is one of my favorite too, any others you guys love? J |

J ======== For The March Of The Black Queen--the song was performed well on most nights, so it's really tough to decide a "best version." As for ITLOTG...Revisited, the Magic Tour versions are overall Freddie's best versions (he actually sings the song RIGHT). Rainbow 1974 is by far, the best 70s version, though. For Liar, the best overall version has to go to Newcastle 1979--everybody is firing on all cylinders, the tempo's cranked up, Freddie nails the song, etc! |
