OMG OMG OMG JOHN HAD A SOLO ALBUM!!??!!??!?!?!?!!?!!?!? i didnt know this, i thought he was to shy to do anything like that but are you sure its Queens John Deacon? and when was this published/sold, was it like ages ago (back in the good old days) or is it resent? because if its resent then tahts odd because i thought he was retired, but i can understand him missing music, and he is still involved with Queen, they cant release any new greatest hits unless they have johns permission, and he always says yes of cource, so i can understand that. but if it is resent, then when is it gonna be released? if it was old, where can i get the songs? is there any on youtube i can download? |
Wiley 06.11.2010 20:56 |
I love these topics! Please nobody spoil it too soon. Haven't heard this one but if his "Man on the shadows" LP is something to go by, John's every bit of a musical genius as Freddie Mercury himself! |
YannickJoker 06.11.2010 21:12 |
That album is fake. John did make two solo records though. 'Man in the shadows' and 'Hiding in public'. Both are quite old now, but they both contain some real gems. |
JacquesDaniels 07.11.2010 01:46 |
Yeah, there's actually quite an interesting story to this album. John actually had recorded most of the songs, but he felt it was way too commercial, so he pulled off the release at the last minute, even though he had just gotten a very good record contract with Rhino. He called me to work on a couple of songs, "Who Am I" (where I provided vocals and percussion) and "Sell Out", which was originally called "That Other Bluesy One". The only material that has been published from the album sessions were the cover art and a very different version of "Who Am I" which I worked on and turned into a very different beast called "What Am I", which now only features elements of the original chorus. Well, obviously the Rhino deal has been hushed since, and no one claims to know anything about it anymore, and John remains resolute in his mission to stay completely underground. I heard he was working on some new songs lately, but I'm sorry to say it was with that guy George Lamb. (But don't tell anyone I said it. =P) |
inu-liger 07.11.2010 04:06 |
Did John ever get a resolution with regards to his lawsuit against Jamie Moses' band stealing that album title? |
emrabt 07.11.2010 04:45 |
Billy Joels Piano on "Mercury Times" is fantastic, in my opinion the best thing he's ever done, blends so well with the techno beats, it's a shame about the reggae section it ruins the whole track. |
JacquesDaniels 07.11.2010 05:41 |
Oh, I always thought the reggae section was the whole idea of it. Well anyway, the lawsuit is still in process. Don't think it'll see an end in the next 200 years. |

I liked the track, but I didn't realize Joel featured on it! That makes the album even better, IMHO! |
Wilki Amieva 07.11.2010 07:18 |
The reggae section is OK. IMHO, it's Billy Joel the one who ruins the song. Don't get me wrong: I love Billy, but I think his piano playing is not well suited to that track. BTW, in which language is John 'singing' in Hookers? It sounds like an Italian pastiche. |

It's Pig Latin... or more to the point, Ostrich Latin. |
*goodco* 07.11.2010 09:11 |
As with MITS, I have the North Korean version, with different track listing. Not sure if Motown Blues is the Errol Brown or the Roger/Brian mix (or a fan remix for that matter). How does one tell the difference? I enjoy the little discussed 'Jump Blues' album. It's pretty jazzy. Also, what is THE official Man In The Shadows tracklisting? I miss the old qzone where I could easily find posters and topics. Thanks in advance |

*goodco* wrote: Not sure if Motown Blues is the Errol Brown or the Roger/Brian mix (or a fan remix for that matter). How does one tell the difference? Quite simple as you can spot some notable roger stuff at 3:23-3:48 (drum-solo) if you listen closely. so it's seems it's not only remixed but 'overdubbed' in the studio by roger. i like the idea of three seperate drum-tracks merged together in a blues song! Billy's piano work on 'Mercury Times' is fabulous by the way. I like the way he captures the athmosphere of 'friends in pain' and adds some hell of a firework to it. must have been be a very productive time for deacy! |
Wiley 07.11.2010 12:32 |
I guess I always assumed it was John playing the piano, which was amazing considering he had been using a prosthetic hand since his '98 strip club accident. |

the cover is easy to find if you do a google search. Some people called it "tacky" |

I'd heard Kim Jong Ill had confiscated the entire pressings and had then replaced John's discs with his own solo album, comprising of stirring nationalistic poetry readings read to the music of popular show-tunes. |

I don't really like John's version of Typical Christmas, the Barry Mitchell original is far superior. |

The fact that I believe Kim Ill made 11 holes-in-one his first time golfing has nothing to do with brainwashing, er, listening to the disk. Then again, after my traditional Halloween viewing of 'Young Frankenstein', I realized one of the MITS tracks bore a striking resemblence to 'Puttin' On The Ritz.' Long live the People's Republic!!! |

On 'Another Me' John recorded his bass backwards. Unbelievable how that man could make a reversed bass sound so groovy! |
Sebastian 07.11.2010 22:14 |
> On 'Another Me' John recorded his bass backwards. Unbelievable how that man could make a reversed bass sound so groovy! I think it's time to put that urban legend to rest: the liner notes do say that he recorded his bass backwards, but it didn't mean that he played the track in reverse; it meant he recorded it while wearing moon boots. I know the booklet shows him playing it as a leftie too, but it was simply a mirror effect on the photo. Rumour has it that he almost got sick at the floor of Metropolis Studios. Gary Langan was not amused. |
brENsKi 08.11.2010 10:53 |
whole thing seeps with the whiff of cop-out to me....two omissions from the track-listing are blaringly obvious: on one side of the coin - he bottled it on the flip side - you could say he maintained his integrity....but i for one think cop out... the album goes a long way short of what he could've produced after 15 years of almost nothing... why did he leave off the tracks him and Freddie were working on at the time of Freddie's death....I am sure that most queen fans would love to hear the sheer funk of "she blows me away" and his own tribute to Freddie "phoenix sons" is sublime......sorry, but this album comes up short for those two major omissions. |

John is currently working on the album with his newly formed band "WhoBeQ". Rumours are that he's also gonna tour (2011) with these guys!! The members of his new band "WhoBeQ" are: John Entwistle Cozy Powell George Harrison The first single is called "Back From a Holiday" |
Fireplace 08.11.2010 15:17 |
Man In Shadows is simply a great album. I just can't believe John was so stupid as to use the bass line of Vanilla Ice's "Ice Ice Baby" without permission. That must have cost him a fortune! |
YannickJoker 08.11.2010 15:41 |
This info just in: One of the tracks on John's new album is called 'Twas A Very Long Ski Trip'. |
matt z 08.11.2010 16:17 |
I just have the Japanese Test Pressing from 07 before it was decided to shelve the album to a future date (if at all)... ...Something about how it'd take away the momentum of the forthcoming QPR album... However the test pressing cites differing versions of the tracks 1. Another Me 2. Daydream 3. Deacon Blues 4. Spooners n Cakes 5. Boys 6. Impostor 7. I am Who am I 8. Mercury Times 9. When it's over, it's over!! 10. When we were queens Until recently i didn't even KNOW there was artwork! hell i never even heard of the bonus tracks.. i guess that's the benefit of being in the UK eh? I also heard a RUMOR about a collaboration... something to do with DUST... like the expression "Once bitten twice shy"... a remix of AOBTD.. but that was years ago... anyone know about it? |
GratefulFan 08.11.2010 17:13 |
Well, look like this is for real. The B side of the first single has been leaked on YouTube. It's a surprisingly bluesy number called 'If I Don't Cash the Cheques (Who Will?)' Impressive stuff! |

John does not have a prosthetic hand. He shattered two of his Metacarpusea during that fight, these were replaced with titanium prosthetics. He can still use both his hands, though on his injured hand he has no feeling in his thumb due to nerve damage. That was 12 years ago. I believe he is currently residing on Bali (Benoa) and Roger Taylor has actually visited him last July. It is unclear what they discussed. I bet it's not a reunion! |
