Inspired by mike hunt's thread, I'd like to know which extended versions do you like (if any) ? If I remember correctly, these are the officially released extended versions (correct me if I'm wrong) Staying Power Back Chat Radio Ga Ga I Want To Break Free It's A Hard Life Keep Passing The Open Windows Man On The Prowl One Vision A Kind Of Magic A Dozen Red Roses For My Darling Pain Is So Close To Pleasure One Year Of Love The Invisible Man Breakthru Scandal Innuendo (explosive version) I personally like only Back Chat, Hard Life and Innuendo, and I specially hate Invisible Man |
vonkeil 31.07.2010 15:08 |
The 12" mix of 'Breakthru' is one of my favourite Extended Mixes ever. |
Pim Derks 31.07.2010 15:34 |
Calling the Innuendo mix extended is a bit misuse of the word IMO. Adding an explosion to the end of the song doesn't make it an extended mix. I think there are some really good mixes, such as the Breakthru, Hard Life, Staying Power and Scandal ones. Ofcourse there are also some boring ones, such as Break Free, Magic & Friends. Still, I would love to have a 2-CD set with all these mixes remastered and restored. |
Pim Derks 31.07.2010 15:35 |
BTW, you're missing - Friends Will Be Friends - Hammer To Fall - Another One Bites The Dust (Colombia only) |
Saint Jiub 31.07.2010 16:38 |
In my arrogant opinion, most ofthe remixes are fairly pointless, although some are very good, while the extended Scandal is a huge improvement. |
Bo Rhap 31.07.2010 16:45 |
I like Radio Gaga's extended mix. And Breakthru too. Yea and Man On The Prowl. |
Wiley 31.07.2010 21:13 |
Staying Power!! I can't believe I hadn't heard it until I got the USA 12" single last year. I like that song a lot and the extended version is even better. |

Is the Columbia AOBTD considered official? |

i dont mind them cus it makes the song more interesting when u have listened to it loads so it makes it so that u dont get bored of it, so yeah u could say i quite like them :) |
thunderbolt 31742 01.08.2010 14:38 |
The extended Hammer to Fall (especially Lord Fickle's remix of it) is five and a half minutes of pure headbanging bliss. |
JeroenG 01.08.2010 16:35 |
Staying Power - Like it very much Back Chat - Rather pointless IMHO, just repeating more of the same Radio Ga Ga - Is OK to me I Want To Break Free - More of the same, the 'Jazz-album'-like end is a nice idea, but doesn't work well IMHO It's A Hard Life - Rather pointless, just repeats an extra bridge & chorus Hammer to fall - Like it very much Man On The Prowl - Although it mostly is repeating parts I still do like it Keep Passing The Open Windows - Quite dull, added strange effects at the end One Vision - Like it. I once edited an 'extended extended version' by adding the 'blurred vision' mix in it and liked it even more A Kind Of Magic - Like some parts in the middle and like the extended guitar ending very much, the rest is OK to me A Dozen Red Roses For My Darling - Rather pointless adding just a few beats at the beginning Friends will be friends - Dull dull dull, what's the point of extending a song that is dull in the short version already Pain Is So Close To Pleasure - Like it especially the beginning, but I must say that I like the single remix better than the album version too One Year Of Love - Like it very much, it's a shame that it's so hard to get on CD Breakthru - One of my favoute extended versions The Invisible Man - Like it very much Scandal - Like it very much You don't fool me (late mix) - Althought a bit long I think it's OK, especially compared to most other horrible remixes of the song I would like to add 'You don't fool me (late mix)', as I consider this the most basic 'extended remix' of the song Also I would like to add the extended versions of solo songs: Freddie Mercury: Love kills - Like it Foolin' around - Like it I was born to love you - Maybe a bit long, but it's OK Stop all the fighting - Maybe a bit long, but I still like it Made in heaven - Beautiful atmosphere, shame that it omits a verse, because I like it She blows hot and cold - More of the same, but can't get enough of the song Living on my own (uk version) - Like it very much Living on my own (us version) - Sticks even more to the original version, like it very much too My love is dangerous - Like it very much Love me like there's no tomorrow - beautiful intro, like it very much Let's turn it on - Like it very much, funny effects Time - Like it, added extra saxophone works very good The great pretender - Quite dull, and a absolutely horrible modulation in the middle Barcelona - Don't like it, it's just more of the same Roger Taylor: Man on fire - Like it Strange frontier - Like it I cry for you - Like it very much The Cross: Shove it - It's OK, adding some new lyrics, but not much special Manipulator - Very nice, but I must say that I consider the extended version as 'the original' actually, and the 7" version as an edit of that one Power to love - It's OK, some repeats and stuff Liar - Like it very much In charge of my heart - My favourite The Cross extended version |
Russian Headlong 01.08.2010 16:55 |
Mixed Bunch. Hate Invisible Man 12" but Scandal and Breakthru sound good. Hammer to Fall 12" is the definitive version of that song, orgasmic guitar solo! Heard a extended mix of AOBTD in a club once brillaint but not sure if its available commercially or was just a dj's mix. |
Adam Unger (QueenVault.com) 01.08.2010 19:26 |
Pittrek, I always considered those two as unofficial releases. I am wondering if Gary or Greg can confirm or deny their authenticity? |

Long intro version actually is an original, and 7" 2 minutes long version is an edit. |
vonkeil 02.08.2010 02:11 |
Ah, yes! - 'I cry for you'!! Sooooo 80s - excellent!! There's quite a number of songs of which I wish there had been extended versions, such as 'Dancer' or RT's 'Abandonfire'... |
Dan C. 02.08.2010 04:24 |
I mostly agree with Panchgani on this. They really do seem kind of pointless... |

Pim Derks wrote: BTW, you're missing - Another One Bites The Dust (Colombia only) ------------------------------------------------------------------- So what's different about this? Been a "collecting" fan since 1986 and have NEVER come across or heard about this until Pittrek mentioned it last week. I take it it's just some crappy DJ remix rubbish? |
Dane 02.08.2010 06:03 |
Hammer to Fall 12" is one of my favourites, great song and lovely extention! And for some strange reason I also like It's A Hard Life. almost no extention, but a lovely acapella bit added. Most of the extended versions are indeed rather pointless, but when I started collecting I was very eager to hear all of these just because they featured 'new' stuff. |

In my opinion... Queen Back Chat (Extended Version) - I like (you're either going to like or hate this, mostly based on your feelings towards Hot Space) Staying Power (US-only Extended Version)- I like (same as above) Radio Ga Ga (Extended Version) - I like I Want To Break Free (Extended Mix) - The best version of the song. I even like the montage ending It's A Hard Life (Extended Version) - Works perfectly. Extended any further would have killed the song Hammer To Fall (Headbanger's Mix) - Awesome Man On The Prowl (Extended Version) - I like Keep Passing The Open Windows (Extended Version) - I like One Vision (Extended Vision) - The best version of the song. I love the extended middle instrumental particularly A Kind Of Magic (Extended Version) - I love the AKO'AKOM' ending A Dozen Red Roses For My Darling (Unlisted Extended Version) - A simple extended intro adds so much Friends Will Be Friends (Extended Version) - Not my favourite version, but not bad. Pain Is So Close To Pleasure (Extended Mix) - One of the best extended versions Queen put out. Better than the album version. One Year Of Love (Extended Version) - Makes a decent song so much more interesting! Breakthru (Extended Version) - Awesome The Invisible Man (12" Version) - My least favourite extended mix. Why process the hell out of this song? Not synthetic enough for you? Scandal (12" Mix) - better than the original Innuendo (Explosive Version) - Pointless? Yes! Awesome? Very! We Will Rock You (12" Remix Ruined by Rick Rubin) - Not bad, but I like the CD version better. You Don't Fool Me (Late Mix) - Long, but pretty decent. Another One Bites The Dust (Team One Black Rock Star Main Pass Mix) - Yes, I have the balls to not only acknowledge this and consider it a legitimate extended version of the Wyclef Jean cut, but also to like it! Yeah, you heard me! That said, I'm NOT a fan of the standard Wyclef version (the New LP Version, as the single calls it). I don't like the Wyclef Jean version because I think it's kind of bland. Under Pressure (Club 2000 Mix) - Not bad I'll cover the Solo extended versions in a future post. |

pittrek wrote: Rhyeking - I think you are a REAL fan :-) +++++++++ Thanks, Pittrek. You're a real fan as well. As are many other, less vocal people on this forum. No one should be afraid to voice unpopular opinions here. If you like or dislike a song or version of a song, it's cool. No one here has a greater understanding or appreciation for this band than anyone else. It doesn't matter if you saw them in 1977 or only just discovered them, or if you think "Body Language" is pretty cool (I think it's very cool, but it's not for everyone). Okay, sermon over! |
Jam Monkey 06.08.2010 01:13 |
Well, if we are talking AOBTD mixes... Queen Bee is a bootleg mix, along with the Flower Power Mix. I am happy to uplaod these if anyone want them, although the records are easy enough to find. There are the DJ mixes; Dakeyne Remix and Les Massengale Remix (Sometimes called the Ultimix). I've never heard of this Columbian extended version. I have the Bicycle Race 12" though. Can anyone who owns the record confim this AOBTD extended mix? |

The one remix i liked was tie your mother down on the hollywood remasters. I want to break free was ok. solo wise i really enjoyed the extended version of the great pretender. Havn't heard all of them though......Never heard 'it's a hard life' or Innuendo. Those must be interesting. |

Freddie Love Kills (Extended Version) - one of the best versions of the song. I like the big synth stings added throughout! Foolin' Around (Original 12" Mix) - A personal favourite (I've always really liked this song) I Was Born To Love You (Extended Mix) - Excellent Stop All The Fighting (Extended Version) - I like Made In Heaven (Extended Version) - Awesome intro She Blows Hot And Cold (Extended Version) - I like Living On My Own (UK Extended Version) - I like My Love Is Dangerous (Extended Version) - Better than the album version Living On My Own (US Extended Version) - Preferred over the UK Extended Version Love Me Like There's No Tomorrow (Extended Version) - Just stunning Let's Turn It On (Extended Version) - I like Time (Extended Version) - Love the sax. Hate the rapid fire "Timedon'twaitfornobodyatall!" at the very end. The Great Pretender (Extended Version) - I love the original, but this just grinds too slow in the middle for my tastes Barcelona (Extended Version) - Beautiful, but sometimes too much of a great thing. The album version is my favourite. Living On My Own (1993 Extended Mix) - I really like Roger Man On Fire (Extended Version) - Awesome Strange Frontier (Extended Version) - So much Awesome! I Cry For You (Extended Mix) - One of the best extended versions ever! The Cross Shove It (Extended Version) - More like a sequel than just an extended version. Excellent. Manipulator (Extended Version) - as noted by someone else, I think this was the original version, edited to the standard version. This is the superior of the two. Power To Love (12" Version) - I like Liar (Extended Mix) - Awesome! In Charge Of My Heart (Extended Version) - One of the best extended versions Ain't Put Nothing Down (Long Version) - Not a traditional extended version, but just with more of the song at the end. Very nice. The Immortals No Turning Back (Joy Stick Mix) - Very cool |

rhyeking wrote: The Immortals No Turning Back (Joy Stick Mix) - Very cool I forgot this one! And I must add that I like it. I like the 7" version too, so I guess it's not really a surprise. |

Everyone always forgets poor John! Ha, just kidding. It's a pity, though, that his two most significant solo efforts were only "No Turning Back" and 'Picking Up Sounds". If he had done an album, with a bunch of other singers ans guest musicians, like the SAS Band in a way, I think it would have been a real treat. I know he wasn't as prolific a songwriter as the other three, but even four or five original songs, one or two previously-Queen-songs (like "Misfire" and "Need Your Lovin' Tonight") and few covers would have given us a full album. Alas, though, it's all academic. |

It's A Hard Life - I use this on my version of 'The Works'. Hammer To Fall- it's OK A Kind of Magic- it's OK One Year of Love-it's OK Friends Will Be Friends Will Be Friends- with Pain deleted, this ends side one of my version of AKOM Breakthru is very cool and different. The rest might have a little extra guitar that would have been nicely added to the originals. But, when I first listened to them, I thought I was going to get an instrumental bridge treat. Instead, they were mostly redundant and boring and not my style at all. A shame that the alternative movie trailer versions of 'The Hero' and 'A Kind of Magic' were never included as bonus tracks or b sides. They had ample opportunities to do so. Solo releases Time-as mentioned earlier, nice sax, bad ending. Barcelona- I love both the original, the 45, and this version Made In Heaven- should have been on the LP Love Me Like There's No Tomorrow-should have been on the LP She Blows Hot and Cold- a bit redundant at times, but OK. Either version should have been on the LP. The rest.......rather boring. Man On Fire-horrendous Manipulator, Power To Love, Life Changes......hardly extended, but the extra 5-15 second versions are better. |
