Greetings to you all on this fine Friday afternoon. Or evening, or Saturday morning, wherever you may be. I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, but here goes.. To my ears, the first line of the second verse of Put Out The Fire sounds like it's Brian - "she was my lover." Agree or disagree? |
Bo Rhap 30.07.2010 14:06 |
I tend to agree. It does sound like Brian. Also,if you listen to the lead-in to the chorus.I think he is singing along with Freddie there too.Because Freddie was exceptionally good at double tracking his voice.Till it sounded absolutely spot on.That doesnt. It sounds to me that Brian is singing alongside Freddie. Would i be right? |
mike hunt 30.07.2010 14:24 |
i think so, sounds like brian, but freddie could sound like him when he wants to. |
The Real Wizard 30.07.2010 14:52 |
And likewise Brian could sound like Freddie. Even Roger. There's a "yeeeeeah" on Touch The Sky that eerily sounds like Freddie. |

Bo Rhap wrote: "Freddie was exceptionally good at double tracking his voice.Till it sounded absolutely spot on." Indeed. Brian once said he was so good at it that the tape would sometimes phase because he was so close from one take to the next. "if you listen to the lead-in to the chorus.I think he is singing along with Freddie there too" Absolutely, it's both of them. |

Agreed!.....I'm surprised you don't know this. you're One of the experts around here. I think some parts of 'sail away sweet sister' he sounds like fred. when he sings soft he sometimes sounds like freddie. Brian sings a nice ballad. |
friedrich 30.07.2010 16:31 |
sorry, don't think it is brian. sounds like freddie to me ... |
Holly2003 30.07.2010 16:33 |
The "she was my lover" line sounds like Fred to me, but it could be Brian I suppose. My question is, what's the point? In Sail Away Sweet Sister Brian let Fred sing a line I'm guessing because Fred could sing it better than Brian. Could Fred not sing this line so he asked Broan to do it? Unlikely. |

Fred. Goodnight. |

Listen to how much "but the constitution's", just those three words, sounds like Bryan Adams. Weird. |

Put Out the Fire is one of those songs I've always wondered about. Large portions of the song sound like it could be either of the two. That particular line, though, does sound very much like Brian...but so does the rest of the song. I suspect that Brian had a guide vocal track for Freddie, and Freddie followed it so closely that he inadvertently sounded a whole lot like Brian for most of the track. As far as that particular line goes, yes, it sounds a lot more like Brian than Freddie, but considering how the rest of the song sounds (and the fact that, almost 30 years later, no one's come out and said anyone other than Freddie sang that line), how could one ever be sure? |
pittrek 31.07.2010 03:36 |
I always thought that Brian sung on all demo recordings of his songs, and Freddie re-recorded the vocals for the album version, trying to sound like Brian. The same with Roger's songs - just check Radio Ga Ga. Or with the old Smile songs - Doing Alright, Polar Bear, Silver Salmon ... - he sounds like Tim on all these songs Does it make sense ? |

if it makes it easier i can upload the isolated vocal tracks? |

Hot Space is the first of the 80's albums that I find a vocal cut and vocal isolation option doesn't work on. If you can do it, I'd love to know what you're using - both software and audio source (ie which release) |

I don't see (hear?) what the confusion is. Freddie sings lead on this and every other verse of the song. The refrains, sung in his really high voice ("I've been told it's the fashion...") do sound like Brian is in there too, I'll grant you that, but I always heard his voice in there. The main verses, including the one in question, are sung in his gravelly, blues voice; very rough. It doesn't sound like Brian at all, or him doing an imitation of Brian. He just sings that part that way. It's a bluesy rock song and he sings the verses accordingly. It IS interesting that he really uses three or four different techniques, sometimes in the same part, throughout the song. Verses = gruff, blues voice Refrain = falsetto (with Brian...or double-tracked) Refrain finale = Full out Rock voice Chorus = all three, at different points, plus chorus with Roger and Brian In the choruses he even drops back to the rough, blues voice for the last line ("Need a gun like a hole in the head!"). For me, there's no mystery here. |
Leonardo Venegas 31.07.2010 11:47 |
To me it's Freddie! |
Rick 31.07.2010 17:00 |
Definitely Freddie. Especially the way he sings 'lover'. |

I have always thought it's Brian and it never occurred to me to ask anyone about it, because I thought it was common knowledge. V. |
FriedChicken 05.08.2010 03:06 |
I also thought it was Brian. I've been thinking that for over 10 years. Also with the final "It could be happening" from Say It's Not True. That also sounds like Brian |
maxpower 05.08.2010 06:37 |
For me its Freddie but it does sound like Brian |

I'm sure Sebastian will know... |
Sebastian 07.08.2010 14:56 |
No, I don't. I can make a guesstimate, pretty much like anybody else in this forum. Could it be Brian? Maybe. Could it be Freddie? Maybe. If it's Fred, is a person who thought/thinks it's Brian a deaf human being? Not necessarily. |
Holly2003 07.08.2010 16:28 |
If it's Brian, can anyone suggest a reason why he would sing one line in the song? Bear in mind this is not the same situation as I Want It All or Sail Away Sweet Sister. In the former, there's a definite break in the song and using a different singer for the 'I'm a man with a one track mind' line makes sense (although Fred could easily have sung the line); in the latter, it's likely Fred could sing the 'Hot child' line better than Brian, if Brian could sing it at all. |

"Also with the final "It could be happening" from Say It's Not True" What is this? I am unfamiliar with this information. |

FriedChicken wrote: "Also with the final "It could be happening" from Say It's Not True. That also sounds like Brian" Excellent catch. Maybe it is indeed Brian. To those who ask why they do this... for this exact reason - to get the people who listen really carefully to scratch their heads like this. |
rhyeking 07.08.2010 23:58 |
I'm not sure that's the *exact* reason they do it, though it's certainly a by-product, that we scratch our heads. I think after a certain point, they realize that the differences in their three voices carry certain unique emotional weights and triggers. When a lyric needs to convey a particular quality, one voice might do it better than another, even if the rest of the song has a single lead vocalist. Keep Yourself Alive: Roger: "Do you think you're better everyday?" Brian: "No, I just think I'm two steps nearer to my grave!" The March Of The Black Queen Roger: "My love is in your hands! I'll foe and I'll fie! In The Lap Of The Gods Roger screaming (though not really lyrics, they're vocals only he could do that way!) Fun It Freddie: "Can't you see? Now we're movin' free! Get some fun. Join that dynasty. Can't you tell, when you get it down, you're the one! You're the best in town." Freddie: "Move on out! Move on up, okay. Do your thing. Do your thing your way. Get our kicks. Get your tricks with me. Get up and dance, honey; the fun's for free." Rock It The intro Action This Day "Action this day! Action This night" Just to cite a few. I'm I'm still of the opinion that Freddie this this particular line in "Put Out The Fire" for not other reason than it's his voice I'm hearing, along with every other lyric. I also think those hearing Brian are either keen to hear what they want to hear and underestimate Freddie's ability to hit that range, or are just flat out mistaken. |

I'm totally sure. |

The songs not very Good anyway.......end of discussion! |
Rick 09.08.2010 11:35 |
I think it's a brilliant song. Love the harmonies. Okay, lyrics-wise not Brian's strongest. The live versions are not the best, IMHO. Quite a hard song to pull off on stage. |

I made a topic like this a while back. I think it's Brian, too. Somebody email him!!!!! |

It's Freddie. Definitely. |
