ANAGRAMER 08.07.2010 16:26 |
Hi folks Just a few thoughts before I call it quits I think it's time for me to put Queen to bed Personally, all that's left is the prospect of more reissues, BM and RT popping up on the odd TV show to pump out WWRY/WATC, the odd collaboration, the daft musicals and Brian's current campaigns I don't disapprove of any of them but none of them float my boat And the thought of GB publishing yet another biography (as if he's an authority) is just milking the cow a bit too far Looking at other bands; Muse taking it ALL a stage further, Rush STILL making great new music after nearly 40 years, Elton (bless 'im) still standing... I know Queen is about to move from EMI to Universal and the propect is quite tantalising but I know in my heart that no good will come of it and we will be subjected to more rahashes, reissues, remixes, reimaginings and endless reblahblahs and special editions It's a real shame Freddie's gone, none of this would have happened the way it's turned out - what happened to quality control - I listened to TCR the other day and it's quite frankly DREADFUL! - in no way stands up to scrutiny beside any other Queen album - lack of progress and imagination. Listiening carefully, I do wonder if Brian just turned up and played ANYTHING that came into his head on those takes... I loved Queen - really loved them. Travelled all over the country to see them, would've trampled a class of small children to hear them, videotaped EVERY TV appearance and nearly wore the tapes out, listened to 'em all night, watched concert DVD's til 4 in the morning. They were just the focal point of my musical life I often wonder what it would be like if FM was still here - I'd no doubt be in a stampede to get tickets for Glastonbury, Hyde Park or wherever they would be stealing the show- but it isn't like that, and for me, a lifelong fan, it's just getting a bit repetitive and tedious. The more I read BMs soapbox, the less I admire the man, don't know why, I just think he's got a bit too brittle in his senior years. RT is a different kettle of fish, funny and articulate but I just can't get into his music at all So, farewell friends, I admire those who persevere, envy those discovering Queen for the first time and pity those who will never see one of the greatest rock performers of all time |

You made some pretty valid points there Anagramer. I think Brian could have put more of an effort into that album (Cosmos Rocks) and it might well have been a lot better than it was, Maybe he had other commitments and couldnt quite find the time to commit full on to it. In fact maybe they all could have put more into it. Who knows. I personally liked the album as I veiwed - well listened to it with the attitude to not expect Queen of old and see it as more of a joining together of three excellent musicians. Years ago, whenever Queen brought out a new album, video or special edition whatever, I was first in the queue at the shop to get my hands on it. Not now. The Live In Ukraine DVD, whilst still a very good DVD in its own right, I waited for nearly 9 months to get it and even then I got it on sale for about £6. I kind of agree about quality and what you said. I laughed at the special edition Metal Box DVD of the Ukraine DVD. The word "crap" came to mind. As for GB and his book..... you dont have to buy it same as you dont have to buy all those other books about Queen - most of which are just shit. |

I respect your views about Queen, but as Paul Rodgers said, he isn't Freddie Mercury, so I don't know what you expected from The Cosmos Rocks...... it was never going to be a Queen Album. I personaly think some of the stuff on there is very good, but some is also average. As for Brian, you say- 'The more I read BMs soapbox, the less I admire the man, don't know why, I just think he's got a bit too brittle in his senior years.' You must have some idea why you don't admire Brian as much as you once did. Brian has used his status to highlight many issues dear to his heart, none of them controversial in any way, unless you conisder his views on the plight of the fox and the badger controversial. |

I've tried to listen to TCR and watched the DVD's but for me it ended back then. I'll stick with my memories and continue to listen to the back catalogue. |

Sadly i agree with the original poster......I'm pretty much done with anything new from the band solo or the brand name. the new material (TCR, The unblinking eye, ect...) does nothing for me and will not buy anything other than the anthologies if it's ever released, but the queen of 1973 to 1991 will alway's be there. they made a mark on me more than any other. I never visit any other music sites, but queen i must talk about, And argue about. As far as bringing up elton, rush, muse......rush and muse didn't lose it's star and another key member (Mr. deacon), Queen did. We could try and be politically correct all we want, but the fact remains freddie was the one who made the band unique. without him everything falls apart. Elton?....well, he hasn't put out a great album in ages, and his own fans realize his best is long gone.....just like queen. |

Totally right. I'm a die hard fan for 24 years, but the longer nothing "new" (box-set, probably "Made In Heaven 2") happened the faster I've lost my interests in that band. This is my first visit on this website for many weeks, years ago I looked every day for getting news about the "box-set", but now I don't care any more. If they release it it's ok, maybe I'll buy it, maybe I won't , I'm not interested in it any more, I've waited for much too long. Only f..... musicals, re-releases and badgers (!!!!!!!!!!!). Goodbye from me, too Have A Nice Day (Bon Jovi) |

Totally agreed with Anagramer, i'll put Queen aside in favor of another band called Litfiba, which reunited recently and now is in full activity (They're on tour this summer and theyre releasing a new album soon). I'm very excited about that, Goodbye Queen. I hope that the next time i get here something really thrilling will be available |

I agree as well. What used to be an innovative and progressive band has now become a cumbersome machine which needs urgent refueling. |

mike hunt wrote: "Elton?....well, he hasn't put out a great album in ages" I thought "The Captain and the Kid" was a great album. Certainly it was no match for Captain Fantastic, but it's the best record he has done in about 25 years. But no matter how good your current music is, people will always want to hear your older songs. Rush's new single is one of the best things they've ever done, but most people still want to hear Tom Sawyer and YYZ. Robert Plant once said the worst thing that can happen to an artist is "being a prisoner of your own success"... even though he doesn't think it applies to him, it does. Everyone wants to see him play Zeppelin songs when they see him, not his new stuff, no matter how good it is. This applies to anyone with mainstream success, even if your popular work wasn't your best work. |

I can't believe I forgot 'Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy' on my list of favourite/essential songs. Must go edit, for the 14th time. |

(COUGH:::COUGH::: QUITCHYERRBITCHING!!:::COUGH:::COUGH) oh... god, this damned cough... "lookit meeee!... i can whine about an incredible band that's still doing creative things, espousing causes and raising funds, because i'm in no band of my OWN!!" "loookitmeeeeEEEEEE!!!" yeah, a bit childish, but markedly so. TCR, though... yeah.. about half of it.. |

I don't think a band like Rush, for example, are prisoners of the past. Quality new music with appeal to a fair chunk of a fanbase will be assimilated and accepted into the whole body of work. People do want the old songs, and that's completely understandable. A loved and familiar song isn't just a collection of notes, it's a feeling, a sense of exhileration maybe, or a connection to something in the past that is otherwise unreachable. A new song does begin as just a collection of sounds that may or may not have immediate appeal. New songs have to pay their own way for a while. Some artists do find themselves facing a choice between commercial success and freedom. Some choose the latter and the costs that come with it. I think of Rik Emmett for example, who has become an eclectic and highly respected guitarist who almost nobody knows, playing for radically smaller crowds for a lot less money that he might have seen had he stuck to commerical rock and roll. Is one better than the other? I don't think so. Each of them pays a different price of sorts. |

It's a pity that there were not a few million people like the original poster. Then Queen and co might sit up and take notice, but clearly the move to Universal is only all about money and more fucking money. Don't blame you at all mate. Good luck |
