Having been in a similar position myself just recently, I can empathize. Though you're a Mac, and I'm a PC (ha ha) essentially how it worked for me was that once the software was installed, when I cllicked to download a torrent from here my uTorrent software opened and the download simply began. I did do some optimization at my router, but that's not necessary to get started enough to have a little confidence in the torrent process. The idea is that you become a peer in a group simultaneously aquiring and sharing pieces of a file or group of files with the end goal of everybody having the whole thing. Once my download process completes, I try to leave it running a few hours longer to share my pieces with others still completing their own downloads.
So, though there are better people to help you with the Mac side of things I'd suggest you just click on a torrent download and see if your download commences. Failing that, launch your torrent software first and then click on the download. Good luck!
I use a PC too, and eventhough I've never used MAC ever, I think this should work-
1) Download a torrent software like Bittorrent or uTorrent (you have already done this) and install it.
2) Download the torrent file (it will have the extension ".torrent") and save it on your computer.
3) Go to the location where you saved the torrent file and double-click on it.
4) You may get a prompt to click "OK" and this screen may also present you with various settings. Click "OK".
Thats it! Once you get a hang of this, you may want to check the settings for your next torrent - like the location where the audio/video (or whatever else) will be saved, connection speed, etc.

THANK you VERY much. This worked! Now, I got a 0% progress bar. What's next?
Bear in mind that one man does not make a torrent. It's possible to have no progress, ever, if nobody else is in the group with you 'seeding' the torrent. Are you using a torrent that has been recently announced?
Great!
Nothing else required from your side. Just leave the computer connected to the internet and it will continue downloading whatever it is that you are trying to download.
If you are seeing the progress bar then you are looking under the General tab. You may also want to check the "Peers" tab, as that will tell you how many people are cnnected to you. The more the number of peers that have 100% (these people are the Seeds), the fatser the download. The others (including you, at this point) are the leachers. The Seeds are the generous people who already have compeleted downloading but are sharing it with us so that we can also download.
Just go through the rest of the tabs and I'm sure you'll be able to figure what is going on. Ofcourse, any questions you have, come right back here.

You will get the hang of it real soon, don't worry. :)
