I see from Brian's website he has the John Birch copy back Does anyone know when he got it back and who mended it? also the back has now been sprayed green around the edges, was that the way it was before? surely not, I don't remember it looking like that before. Who found it? I know it was stolen after the gig and I have seen a pic of it in bits but I didn't think Brian ever saw it again Any info out there? |

Here's the fast version; Brian broke the guitar at a gig in Chicago during the Hot Space tour in Chicago. The guitar was then given to an employee of Fender. He was going to make a prototype for Fender. The guy was fired when Fender went through some major cutbacks. Brian then made a deal with Guild. The guitar was put away until someone found it not too long ago. It's been in Brian's possession for a couple of years now. I'll post some more info once I get home. |

The Guild factory is walking distance from my home. The main office was in New Jersey. My former guitar player worked there when Brian came in February of 84. I drove by and saw the limo but never got inside. My buddy said he brought it in without a guitar case and then they took it all apart to take measurements etc. He'd been there a couple of times after that but as most know the relationship with Guild and Brian went south. Guild shut down a few years ago after Fender bought them out. My buddy now works for Hamer near Hartford Connecticut and he told me that Guild is sort of back in business as they are basing themselves in or around the Hamer factory compliments of Fender. As for the John Birch? I had read that Brian tossed it off the stage after a poor performance. |

Except the concert was in New Jersey, not Chicago. Brian got upset with it as it was the second guitar to break a string in a two minute span, so he threw it over his Vox stack and it shattered into several pieces, as seen in the pictures. |

Great thanks, I remember reading the article on Brian's website, but I didn't know it had been repaired and more to the point I still don't understand why it has gone green on the back and sides, in another topic someone siad it was due to paint oxidising? That can't be right surely why after all this time? and why would that happen under the varnish? Anyone know? |
RMT 04.08.2009 05:04 |
Hi guys, It was repaired by Andrew Guyton. Brian wanted the guitar put back together after he had it returned to him...with the proviso that Andrew didn't do a complete restoration as he wanted to see where he broke it. It sounds amazing, I had the privilege of playing it a few weeks back through my rig and it sounded great! |

Just back from the Photo exhibition by Peter Hince Well worth going BTW Noticed that the John Birch guitar did actually have a green tint around the edge!!! Looking closely at the shots from the WWRY shoot you can see it Never knew... |

I don't know if anyone can remember but the guitar was sold on ebay a couple of years ago. It was still in pieces back then. Brian must have bought it back in the auction. |

birch guitar isnt good at all i've played it..... |
Togg 05.08.2009 12:13 |
No you haven't because unless you managed to do that in the late 70's or early 80's it's been in bits since then and only just restored by Mr Guyton. |

Have played the BM Super (Brian's own), the Birch guitar, the spacey BMG black with Brians face special and his scalloped Guyton as BHM sent them to a Red Special meeting in early July. I'll try to put pics up soon. |

Does anyone know if Brian's ever played it? |

I may be merely a Burns owner, but it sure feels good being part of such a great 'club'. My girlfriend owns a BMG and plans to construct two RS's herself - including a lovely black one for me. ok, done :) |

For a £500 guitar bought in 2001 upon release, I happen to love my Burns, and as I have never played a Guyton, Super, Birch, Old Lady etc then I only hve other guitar makes to compare it too, and I prefer it's feel and tone. So I am more than happy thank you. |

So the Burns version (which I own) that was heralded by all the guitarist magazines as the best guitar in it's class when launched is rubbish... The same guitar that Brian and Jamie used on stage when it was released, is rubbish Sorry but you have no clue what you are talking about, I own 14 guitars, a Fender Custom shop strat, Les Pauls, and Rickenbackers, however the most versitile of the lot is the Burns. Later versions of the Guild guitar were not great, but the first versions of that were damn good too. I will purchase a 'Super' shortly and maybe one day get my hands on a genuine Guyton version, but until then the Burns version is a Great guitar I own serial number 00080 from the first batch. |

Glad someone else agrees that the Burns is not such a bad guitar after all. I have the cd from 'Guitarist' magazine where Brian compares it to the Lady, and if HE is happy then I have NO reason not to be. What a time that was. Learned about it and pre-orded it in Oct.01, bought the mag too (Nov. issue) and then got the guitar 21st Dec 01, with the custom hard case three weeks later. I am not a man of means, and as such that guitar is my prized possesion, and probably will be even if I end up with Guyton. I wanted a BHM guitar since I was 10 in '85. Pretty clear from my nym what no. I have :) Not that any opinions of andreas mercury are worth anything anyway (look at his sig ffs). |

OMG stop crying about my sig its just a joke myspace set up to be parody of my ex-bandmates! ive never heard such crying! and Toog you didn't let me finish! to the guitar ... variable in build qualities is what I was going to say. i have played to a good Burns but the one I had was not such a great thing .... even after multiple setups at my locla shop! do you consider maybe I should try another one in case I got a rotten egg (it WAS secondhand ...) |

WTF...I didn't let him finish.....? Does the internet work differently in your world? You stopped typing and guess what, you finished... Anyway, my gut tells me it might you rather than the guitar, however (cough) I guess you could try another, without knowing what the problem is it's difficult to say, however if correctly set up even cheap guitars can be made to play pretty well. The Burns was put togethr well, the later shipments were a little less focused on attention to details and then Brian set up a company to make the new ones, they are now very well constructed and extremeley good value for money. Guyton guitars are in a different class, however you would expect them to be at that price. In all honestly although the custom shop fender is beautiful and was over £3000 it is not as flexible as the Burns. The sound of the burns in combination with any of the following Vox Deacy, Digitec pedal, AC30 works extremely well and is a very accurate version of Brian's sound (particularly if used with AC30 and treble booster, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference (If Brian were playing that is) |

I'm forever adjusting the pickup heights on my Burns. When I first got it, it was pretty spot on as far as getting Brian's sound went. After I pulled the scratchplate off to paint it, I ruined the pickups and their springs and had to put it together all over again. Ever since then it's been a lot less "Brian" but to be honest I don't care. I only go for the Queen sound if I'm doing a video for Youtube or (in the off chance) that I have to play any Queen live. The way I have it now is just fine for my purposes. A sort of Ricky 325 tone on the bridge pickup, a great twangy sound when the bridge and neck are out of phase .... it can still pull off the Bo Rhap solo sound pretty well but I have the neck pickup way too low. I'll bring it up higher again someday. |
