This is REALLY good news. There are NO sign of the 12" mixes, so hopefully they'll either be in boxset number 4 or they'll do a proper double CD release. Hmmm. I know which will be the more expensive option, so I think they'll go for boxset 4 :( |

This 2nd box of 13 CD singles still partakes in the Top 40 rule, and will right up to the 4th Box. So that is why we have Calling All Girls in this box....because it was top 30 in Canada. If we hadn't of kept to the top 40 rule then we have already missed out on the likes of Mustapha, It's Late and Jealousy, to name a few. So the 4th box will go up to and include the final Queen singles that were released and made the top 40 anywhere in the world......there will be no 12" versions, Extended or Instrumentals at all in this series. This is not what this project is about. It is about all the original Queen singles that made the top 40 anywhere in the world (based on the 7" vinyl format)......that was the criteria on this one. |

Were all of the singles from Made In Heaven released on 7" vinyl (I can't recall at the mo), and therefore will not be excluded from box 4 on this basis? Were the live releases of WWRY/Champions and Who Wants To Live Forever from Wembley that came out on CD single in (I think) Holland or Germany or France ever released on anything other than CD single? Cheers ps - why the new user ID Greg?!? |
Walter B. 22.04.2009 15:58 |
The only 7" vinyl singles from the Made In Heaven album that were given a commercial release were Too Much Love Will Kill You and Let Me Live. TMLWKY came out as a pink coloured 7". Let Me Live is a 7" picture disc. The live releases of WWRY/Champions from Wembley and Who Wants To Live Forever were also released as cassette singles and 7" vinyls. WWRY/WATC was released in Italy as a 12". PS: GT and Greg are two different persons by the way. |

In that case I am looking forward to box 3 (?) too, as the single remix of 'Pain is so close to pleasure' went no 26 in the Netherlands, so it should be present in the box. |

I haven't looked yet, but,...why is AOBTD paired w/ Dragon Attack? Last time I checked AOBTD charted #1 here in the USA and had Don't Try Suicide as the b-side. So shouldn't this be the b side then? |

I guess the reason is they have based AOBTD on the more common UK release. The UK release meets the Top 40 rule, but agreed it charted higher in other countries, so might have been better going for a non UK format. |

If we had of gone for the US release then we would of had no picture sleeve to use. We didn't want to go for the Japan release as we already have two in this box already, and it's supposed to reflect an international feel. In the end we didn't go for the UK release either..........so we used the release from Mexico. |
DragonOnMyBack 23.04.2009 04:36 |
Gary, one other question. Did Under Pressure / Soul Brother get a different picture sleeve and chart within the top 40 anywhere else in the world apart from the UK? The reason I ask is judging from the photo earlier in the thread it looks like we have 2 covers in this set. that are almost completely black with minimal writing etc. It would have been nice to get a rarer cover for Under Pressure than, what looks like, the UK one. Especially given the cover of Calling All Girls which is obviously the only real option for that single. I guess there was the Japan Snowdon photo sleeve (not sure if it charted top 40), but then again reading your previous post maybe that woudl mean too many Japanese versions in the box again. |
GT 23.04.2009 04:52 |
Good point, and this was addressed. So again we never went for the UK issue and if you look carefully (though it's not a very good pic), you will see it's the Spanish release. The nice thing about these spanish speaking countries (inc Mexico) is that they usually had the spanish spelling of the song on the front cover.....and that makes it more interesting to use as the covers for these box sets. |

So this 4 box-set release is an even more watered down verison of the originally proposed/planned boxset of 10CDs than I realised. Well. I won't be buying any then. Good job Queen Productions limited them to only 10,000 copies isn't it. I'd rather (and I am) spend my money on ebay obtaining the original vinyls. |

Gary, Is there going to be any sort of booklet with box 2. I know that was discussed here after the release of Box 1 and think Greg mentioned something might be done. Did it happen? Personally if there is to be a booklet now I would prefer to see a single booklet covering all the singles in all the boxes, included as a sort of bonus item in box 4 rather than 3 boxes with booklets and 1 without. Either way do you have any news? |
GT 24.04.2009 10:17 |
Hopefully something will happen to cover all boxes, but there certainly wont be a booklet in box 2. Nothing has been decided yet to cover the whole series, but we live in hope.....just to complete a really nice series of CDs (and that's my opinion). |

And todays press release: QUEEN: THE SINGLES COLLECTION, Volume 2 More of the Queen Singles You Always Wanted Release date: June 15, 2009 The second volume of Queen’s massively impressive Singles Collection CD series is set for release by EMI on June 15. Aimed to make available and replicate in faithful detail every one of Queen’s singles to have made the upper reaches of the charts anywhere in the world, the collection was launched last December with a set covering the band’s career from the early years 1973 – 1979. This latest Volume 2 box set covers the subsequent period of mid 1979 – 1984 with 13 singles drawn from the albums Live Killers (79), The Game (80), Flash Gordon (80), Hot Space (82) and The Works (84). The subsequent volumes will follow the band’s singles through to the final Queen studio album, Made In Heaven from 1995. While focusing primarily on the band’s complete UK singles output, the importance of the series is amplified by the inclusion on many singles only released abroad as well as rare non-album B-sides, live tracks, and some seldom-heard alternative mixes. This is a collection made up of the singles in their true original form, delivering every top 40 Queen single heard on the radio anywhere across the world. This collection highlights one of the most adventurous periods in Queen’s history which saw the band constantly reaching out into new territory, both as studio musicians and live performers. Considering the band was seldom away from touring it is remarkable they were able to achieve such an output of new recorded work. In the five year period these singles cover the band toured Europe three times, Japan three times, the USA twice and even managed to break open the Latin America countries with a series of logic and – some would say – sense-defying stadium concerts which Queen would later return to for the 1985 historic Rock in Rio concerts. Recording wise, Queen released their first totally live album, Live Killers, strayed from the rock path to create some classic pop singles – Another One Bites the Dust, Radio Ga Ga and I Want to Break Free, flirted with dance music with Hot Space, made an all-time classic track with David Bowie, and brilliantly crossed the boundary into films soundtracks with the Flash Gordon album, something they would do even more successfully several years on with the Highlander soundtrack, released as the A Kind of Magic album. Queen Singles Collection Volume 2 – Tracks: Kicking off with Queen’s first ever live single, Love Of My Life (from the first live album Live Killers), this much loved Freddie Mercury composition is a significant departure from the original studio version recorded for A Night At The Opera four years earlier. Although not a big hit in the UK or Europe, it was a huge No. 1 in the South American territories, and so features in this set, in a recreation of the rarely seen Japanese sleeve. Another Freddie song, and yet another musical departure – this time a rockabilly foray – Crazy Little Thing Called Love would become the band’s first No. 1 single in the USA. It reached the same position in several other territories too, as would the album on which it later appeared, The Game (1980). Brian May’s ballad Save Me, Freddie’s Play The Game, with its non-album Roger Taylor B-side A Human Body (this boxed set being its CD debut), and the next American No.1, John Deacon’s Another One Bites The Dust, continued a string of singles from the band’s most successful album up to that point, and got the 80s off to a promising start. Queen’s first venture into film, with the soundtrack to Flash Gordon produced the single Flash, known in some parts of the world as Flash’s Theme (AKA Flash), and here it is presented in another beautiful sleeve produced for Japan. Another first would find the band recording with another musical artist, David Bowie, for the No 1 single Under Pressure in 1981, a true collaboration emerging from a studio jam session in Montreux. This single also featured a little known non-album B-side, in Soul Brother (written and performed by Queen). Freddie’s funky Body Language and Brian’s South American tour inspired Las Palabras De Amor (The Words Of Love) were the next singles, followed by Roger’s first ever ‘A’ side single Calling All Girls –from the Hot Space album. Released only in America, Australasia and Canada, it would make the top 40 in the latter country only. John Deacon’s Back Chat, released in the summer of 1982, was the very first Queen remixed single. Queen took the following year off in terms of single releases, and touring, but 1984 began with the band back on top form with the Taylor penned Radio Ga Ga reaching No 1 in 19 countries and giving Roger his first international hit. A heavy rock number from Brian, I Go Crazy, was the B-side, and yet another track not featured on an album, in this case The Works. Another remix was created for John’s massive international hit I Want To Break Free, and came in four different picture sleeves for the 7” in the UK. For this set we selected the European sleeve. And so the mighty Queen machine rolled on, with this second set of singles providing another truly grandiose and varied musical journey in the band’s singles history. Packaged in lift off top box, the 13 CD singles feature a selection of authentically reproduced cover artwork from around the world. Released by EMI June 15, 2009. Track listing: CD Single 1 1. LOVE OF MY LIFE (Live) (Mercury) 2. NOW I’M HERE (Live) (May) CD Single 2 1. CRAZY LITTLE THING CALLED LOVE (Mercury) 2. WE WILL ROCK YOU (Live) (May) CD Single 3 1. SAVE ME (May) 2. While I understand the desire not to use too many Japanese sleeves, perhaps the solution given the lack of choice for UP & CAG would have been for one of them to be Japanese, and to drop one of the others (which could be replaced more easily by something from elsewhere. |

Proofreader in the house? Or two? ( I missed the 'Girls' error when posting on another board) btw..........."3" might not be so bad for those who want the AKOM nonalbum B sides, the terrific 'Miracle' nonalbum B sides (other than the title track), along with 'Lost Opportunity' and the 'It's A Beautiful Day' edit. For this collection,.....maybe someone will send me 'A Human Body' ........I burned it from the 'Complete Works', and have it on a Roger compilation, but why it was not included as a bonus on the cd issue of 'The Game' is beyond me. Hell..........I'd have dished out money for this 'collection' just to get the soundtrack version of 'The Hero' in a nice and clean CD release, (why that wasn't on the movie CD as a bonus is beyond me also).....but............oh, well...................guess I get to save some money joe+susan+dancing doggie+ |

Prior to the release of the first box set of CD singles, we tried to get every singles chart position all over the world. The UK and USA charts are easily available as they have kept a good record of chart statistics since the 1950's, but other countries around the world hadn't kept records or never had charts to compile information from anyway. So we could never establish from anyone if certain singles did indeed reach the top 40.....if they had one of course. This is what happened to NEED YOUR LOVING TONIGHT, although it is said it hit the top 40 in Canada, nobody could verify this not even the record company. No doubt in a years time somebody will come on here and say that MUSTAPHA did indeed reach the top 40 in say Yugoslavia.....and that LIAR was a huge top 10 hit on.........Mars! |

It's a great song that would be heard for the first time by most of the casual buyers the set is aimed at, and it gives Queen another wordwide top 40 single for their stats which cannot be argued against by anyone cos there is no official chart to deny such a claim?!!? |

Its bizarre that they were the biggest band in the world at that point, and on the back of Crazy Little Thing Called Love and Another One Bites The Dust (plus The Game LP), that this really good track just didn't do anything as a single. Same thing goes for Spread Your Wings after WWRY/Champions/NOTW - poor John - that must be a confidence shaker after two of your best songs get single releases and 'flop'. (relatively speaking) "poor john"... as you mentioned... i think he got his fair share of success through AOBTD... so prob wasn't that bothered. They all had their flops. |

Hey Gary, another thank you for these releases. I love cd singles - always have loved the format, and having the cool artwork on these slips is great. My fave so far is Fat Bottomed Girls. Great cover. Very much looking forward to the Calling All Girls single in the next box, as well as finally getting one of my fave RT songs in A Human Body on CD. |

Having heard the samples on the link given, i actually think I will after all buy these box sets. I think the fury which came after the first set was released on the QZ boards actually coerced me into not buying into it... but to be honest, if the samples are anything to go buy... they actually seem pretty well remastered... and that's only going by the samples given. |

GT wrote: Yes I can safely say that these two are in the box....obviously. Obviously? That's a shame if you're indicating then that UK hit singles (the Greatest Hits type singles) get precedence over the slightly rarer things. Of the 7 possible AKOM singles, I'd much rather see Pain Is So Close to Pleasure and One Year Of Love over A Kind Of Magic and Who Wants To Live Forever. WWTLF in particular is a fantastic song, but I could really live without another copy of it. Ah well, there's more than enough in these sets to keep my interest, but it seems like a missed opportunity in this regard. |

If I say that both ONE YEAR OF LOVE and PAIN IS SO CLOSE TO PLEASURE were hit singles (top 40) somewhere, then you know what I mean. |

And if I am not mistaken Princes of the Universe hit number 32 in Austrailia as well. GT, Are the final two boxes going to follow the first 2 and have 13 discs each? If so, and given that I think you mentioned previously the sets would run up to No-one but you / Under Pressure (Rah). I'm not sure how all the remaining Top 40 singles can fit into 2 boxes of 13 discs.. By my calculations there are at least the following top 40 singles still remaining : 1) It's A hard Liffe 2) Hammer To Fall 3) Thank God It's Christmas 4) One Vision 5) A Kind Of Magic 6) Friends Will Be Friends 7) Who Wants To Live Forever 8) I Want It All 9) Breakthru 10) The Invisible Man 11) Scandal 12) The Miracle 13) Innuendo 14) I'm Going Slightly Mad 15) Headlong 16) The Show Must Go On 17) Bohemian Rhapsody / These Are The Days of Our Lives 18) Heaven For Everyone 19) A Winter's Tale 20) Too Much Love Will Kill You 21) Let Me Live 22) You Don't Fool Me 23) No One But You 24) Under Pressure (Rah) Using the above based on UK chart positions thats 24 discs, leaving only 2 for the following: Princes Of The Universe (#32 in Australia) Pain Is So Close To Pleasure (#26 in Holland) One Year Of Love (#29 in Spain) Unless of course at least one of the last two boxes is going to contain more than 13 discs. There are also other singles that could qualify, such as the Five Live single with George Michael depending on how strict the rules are about other artists appearing / whether they are classes are re-issues of earlier releases etc |

Good point - I have previously posted somewhere on here about these releases from Live At Wembley, and as to whether they qualify for the box sets. On this data they definitely do (Love of My Life is included and that was a live single). It's slightly strange that GT says that they don't want to release too much info about tracklistings, but surely by the very nature of the sets containing only top 40 singles we already know the exact contents! (bar one or two doubtfuls which from the sound of it even those putting together the boxes haven't really even found out about yet!!) |
Micrówave 02.06.2009 13:09 |
It's slightly strange that GT says that they don't want to release too much info about tracklistings, That's because they're taking the "LOST" approach... making it up as they go. They realize as they get closer to the end of these, they're not going to sell as much. Volume IV will not sell half as much as Volume I, so someone needs to figure out how to equalize that out. Probably, some unreleased stuff will end up on IV, just to get the sales. |

That seems quite good info, in that whoever found it is very specific about the dates and positions, seems to know all the details so unlikely to be guess work. After posting my list earlier and seeing GT's comment I took the liberty of doing a search myself but could only come up with a wikipedia entry which is not always reliable. During the search I learnt about the Kent Charts and and found that they copies for 86/87 in the Library of Victoria. The Library website has a section that allows you to ask questions relating to the content of the Library so I sent them a message asking the question of when and what position it got to in the charts according to the Kent documents they have. Not sure if I will get an answer but it says they will get back to me within 10 days with some sort of response. If I get anything that can co-oberate the link above I will post it here. But getting hold of the Kent book should also answer the question, Kent was considered the official Australian chart in 1986/87. The charts are now handled by another company. |

GT, In terms of proof - what sort of evidence do you need to have enough weight to argue that it should be included in the boxsets? I've asked the guy who posted the chart placings under the forum link above if he can provide a scan of the chart or at least a reference to the source of his information. I've also asked the researcher at the State Library of Victoria if they can send me a scan of the chart / their source - assuming they can comfirm that it reached the Top 40. |

Yes, VB9. I agree you should be the one credited with finding the answer, as it was your post on the australian chart forum that got the answer we were looking for I just did a few google searches and sent an email to a librarian. Anyway, like yourself I just wanted to try and give it the best chance of being included in box set. |

GT, VB9, I got a respopnse from the guy at the State Library of Victoria today. He confirmed the same information that VB9 got from the guy on the australian charts forum. Ie. that it got to number 32. In fact he confirmed it from both the Kent Report and the Australian version of Rolling Stone Magazine. The Librarians full response is below : I am a librarian from the State Library of Victoria, and I am responding to your question relating to the Australian chart position of the Queen single entitled 'Princes of the universe'. According to page 243 of the Australian chart book (1970-1992), compiled by David Kent... link ...which sources it's information from the Kent Report, the single did indeed hit a high-point of number 32, and sat in the charts for 10 weeks after being released on 18 August, 1986. I was also able to back up this position in the October issue of the Australian 'Rolling Stone'. I hope that this satisfies your query. Sincerely, John Stevens Librarian Arts Team The above info along with my original question can also be viewed on their website under this link : link Hopefully this along with VB9's info can help convince everyone that it should be included in singles box 3. |

Definitely shouldn't count as a reissue (in my opinion) - these were standalone, first time live versions of these tracks, released as singles to promote an album. The reissue debate I believe relates to studio tracks (ie WWRY/WATC/WWTLF) where those exact studio versions had been released studio versions had been released before, but just with different packaging. Ah ok, I suppose your right, this particular case is no different to the LOML single. I guess GT does not want to give too much away in order to keep a few small surprises back, given that the majority of the boxes content is very easily guessable. I only hope that there is room in the boxes for all of these. Personally I would rather get all the alternate (non-UK) AKOM singles with intresting covers, than the WWRY/WATC live single if there is not room for all of them. But that's just my preference. I think Volume 3 has the most potential of all the boxes in terms of interesting sleeves when you consider what options are available out there for the singles released between end of 84 and 89. |
GT 03.07.2009 02:39 |

Cheers Thanks guys (cmsdrums / Dragon) for the questions. It looks like that the ONLY single not to make the box sets will be the live single of 'WATC / WWRY', it just won't fit into the fourth box at all. Yes this was a legitimate single, the only one released from the 'Live At Wembley '86' album issued in Europe in 1992. It did reach number 12 in the charts in Holland...BUT...there is just no room for it. |

Ermmm - make the box a little bit bigger?!?! This does unfortunately make it seem as if bad planning has been present since the inception here - my mind sees the conversation between archivists, band and QPL along the lines of:- "Right, we'll have four box sets, all exactly the same size, each one taking, lets say, at 13 CDs" "OK matey, I'll go and get the outer boxes all made up now well in advance so that we can just fill em up and ship em out when the labels are printed on" "Great idea" Several months later..... "Ermmm, we've actually done some research now and it seems that there should be 14 singles in the next one" "Shit, but I've already made the boxes up - 40,000 of the little fuckers" "Oh arse - never mind, the general public that this is aimed at won't care if it doesn't actually carry every worldwide top 40 single that the whole marketing angle sold it as" [/img] |
