How long have you been playing? What type of music & instrument{and what brand?} do you play? Who were your influences? Do you play more than one genre of music? Etc. |
Raf 07.03.2009 07:48 |
I used to play the guitar in a hard rock band, but I had to move to another city to attend classes at university. Due to my studies, I haven't practiced properly since november or so, with a small exception in February. During that period, all I did to improve musically was to study harmony. Once I get used to my new schedule over here, I'll start practicing again, and once I'm in good shape I'll start looking for a band. My goal is to create a blues rock/early hard rock/early heavy metal band (you know, that bluesy sound from the late 60s: Cream, Jimi Hendrix Experience, early Led Zeppelin, early Black Sabbath...), but while I don't find musicians with the same interest, any kind of rock band will do for me, so that I'll at least be active. |

I do. Reggae. With an unintentional touch of disco, I think. Sounds horrible. But it's not. |

I play drums in a local band called Unbalanced. Our style is kind of hard to summarize in one word, as we do hard rock, some metal, punk, and 'funk-rock'. You get the idea. I've been in the band since September 2007, and have played 5 live shows to date. Although we haven't recorded an album yet, we do put out some demos online as well as live material, which you can hear some examples of on our website link On the side, I can also play some bass and guitar (mostly rhythm - I only read tabs unfortunately, although I am slowly starting to learn some songs by ear better these days as opposed to relying on tabs). My favourite song to play bass along to is Pink Floyd's "Money". |

Well, I don't play in a band... ..but I'm a singer, and I sing with a quartet that specializes in classical vocal quartet repertoire. (La di da). ..and sometimes, the soprano and I do concerts of classical and opera duets. |
Lady Nyx 08.03.2009 13:57 |
im a singer, its just 3 of us right now, but hopefully there will be 4 again someday. i play bass and piano, a little bit of guitar, but i suck at it. played piano since i was 10, wrote songs since i was about 7 or 8, played bass since i was 14 and have been attemptign to teach myself guitar. my range is ridiculous, but im too shy to use all of it yet. i dont have a band name yet. |

I used to play in a band. I played piano in it. I joined 2 years ago. And last summer, we were invited to play at a concert in san antonio. we opened up for a local band (their name has something to do with cucumbers) haha the hilarious part was that s.a. thought we were better. unfortunately i had to leave december of 2008 due to the fact that i have to finish my bachelors degree and working 3 jobs. now it'll be two because i'm getting stressed. the bummer part was that there were 11 band members. 2 pianos (i was the first piano to join) 2 electric guitars 1 accoustic guitar 1 bass 1 drummer 4 singers we sounded really good too. but now the number has reduced to 6 1 piano (cause i left) 2 electric guitars 1 accoustic guitar 2 singers the drummer is one of my best friends he left also cause he has to take many classes and work |

In case any of you were wondering what kind of drum kit I use, it's a Mapex Orion kit (which Josh owns). Cool set man[/img] ! Have you used any other brands, and if so which one did you like the most? |
inu-liger 11.03.2009 13:26 |
When I started out, we had a cheap Gretsch (csp?) kit, which had one rack tom and one floor tom, and I don't recall what the cymbals used were, but it had a small bass drum, and wasn't that good to be honest. We did expand it to include 3 toms (to replace the one rack tom) later on, before we upgraded to the Mapex. Not sure I took actual pictures of it - I do have videos though, but would prefer to keep them offline, as I was a bit crap then compared to now :-P The Mapex kit I use now is my favourite. |

How long did it take you to learn to play the drums? |
inu-liger 12.03.2009 03:17 |
jadedlady wrote: How long did it take you to learn to play the drums? Well, that's kind of hard to answer. I could play simple stuff and maybe then some during concert band in (junior) high school rather discontinuously between 1999-2005. But for proper rock band, which was a dream of mine for a long time, it took me a few months (since joining in Sept. 2007) to sort of catch up to my band's standard (I was pretty crap at first...), with still quite a bit of room always for improving and adding to my technique. |
Sonic_Libido 15.03.2009 03:05 |
I play in a band called "Sonic Libido" we play Ska, Reggae, Blues, Rock... genre wise we travel around... but ska is our bread & butter... our hearts beat in offbeats, y'know. I sing and write songs... and I'm learning piano. we're looking for a drummer... but they're hard to find our influinces are mostly ska groups like The Specials, The Selecter... Reel Big Fish, The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, etc. but we're also big fans of rock groups like Queen, The Who, The Doors... |

I play jazz trumpet. But I'll play anything within reason. Influences include Louis Armstrong, Maynard Fergusan, Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderly, Freddie Hubbard, and the like. Also, let's not forget about Queen, Tchaikovsky, Metallica, and the like. I take part in four bands, all associated with the college I'm attending -- Big Band, Jazz Combo, Wind Ensemble, and Marching Band (I'm a drum major). Oh, I've been playing for 11 or 12 years...and prior to that I played trombone for a year. I'm learning piano, voice, and various percussion instruments at the moment. In the recent past I learned basics in violin, viola, cello, and bass. I will be diving into trombone, frenchhorn, tuba, clarinet, flute, saxophone (various types), etc within the next two and a half years. |
Yara 16.03.2009 23:05 |
Well, dear Jadelady, I do play in a band, but it's such a big one that I don't even get noticed!!! It's a way of organizing the band so that there are always people covering my fumbles. It's a way people found to make music sound larger than life and musicians cover each other's mistakes, in the hope that some individual flaws won't destroy the whole performance. They even came up with a fancy name for this: "Orchestra". It's a drag! If you're doing everything right, no one notices you; if you do things wrong, there's always a "comrade", let's say, who's going to pick on you and have the whole band know the bad step. : -)) Best regards. |

Actually I do think that other members of QZ should form a new band called "Treasure Moment". I bet even the worst of us could come up with better music, and it'd really piss off that drug addled incestuous knob-end. I'm a dreamer. |

I think for starters we should all pick instruments that we don't ordinarily play or aren't very good at. Therefore I'm putting myself down for either brass or percussion. |

Well, I play the Viola, and used to do a lot of string quartet work, and besides, I began to learn guitar by myself, and met another string quartet violist, found of rock'n roll, who plays Bass guitar... We only had one session so far (with a violin maker, playing guitar, and a couple of other friends for drums, keyboard, and vocals), during we tried several covers (Symptom of the Universe, Hard to handle, Enter Sandman, Tie your Mother Down, Highway to hell) it was a bit of a mess cause if we all started together, ending a song was harder, but what a fun we had! I hope "Shemay" (name of the band from a belgian beer, and BHM...) will rock on! cheers! |

Once in a while, I'll go a few days without shaving and put some ragged clothes on and then I go to Boston in the business district, and I gently play an acoustic guitar. I get good money for it. |
