... or whomever took this decision. The remaining members of Led Zeppelin will indeed tour without Plant, but will not use Led Zeppelin as a name. Did you hear that, mr. BM? |

What on earth would be the point? I'd only go to see Jonesy, Plant and Bonham anyway. The appeal is diminished somewhat if they have a young no-hoper trying to sing for them. The way I see it, it should be Plant, or this guy , or retirement. Seriously. |

Couldn't they be waiting for the QPR tour to end to ask "someone" to join in? As I said, I saw Page/Plant once and it was one of the best concerts I've seen. It was almost a Led Zeppelin concert (or was it? 90% of the setlist was Zep), just under a different name, so it's not because of the original bass player or the dead drummer was missing that it should be bad (*hint*). It was good because they were good, in a very good shape and were playing their classics as they were in their good old days, without teleprompters et al. When they started Page/Plant, they asked JPJ to join in, he said he wouldn't because of several things - including fair treatment (or the lack of it) and supposed solo projects too. The drummer they had used then was amazing (I guess he was also member of Plant's solo band). Anyone who saw the O2 concert knows that Plant isn't in a good shape anymore for Zep stuff at least, and he knows that. And you could see how bored he was while singing Stairway for the 10000000000th time. Source? Choose yours: link /> |

Meh, what's the point in dropping the name? It's not like their setlist won't be basically some 20 or 30 Led Zep songs anyway... |

He is credited on the album Fate Of Nations which Robert released in 93. There are a few others mentioned in the credits as well. Including his drummer from the Now & Zen & Manic Nirvana tours in the late 80's & 1990, CHris Blackwell. Although, there is no break down of who played on what tracks. I saw the "Nations" tour in Philadelphia, but couldn't tell you who the drummer was. I have googled it & can't get an answer. By the way, Michael Lee was an animal! Great drummer!! |

I've heard the latest Plant duet with some woman-singer and i have to confess that I didn't like his vocal at all. You must have heard it too, don't you think that his voice is worse than it used to be? Maybe that's the reason why he turned down the offer to join the band? Won't be able to sing the great old Zep songs? |
Marcos Napier 14.11.2008 18:05 |
I'm almost sure that this is the main reason. He knows that he isn't in good shape for Zep songs, and probably doesn't want to ruin it all, singing them in new keys or something. When I saw them (96) he was already losing the highs for good, but it was very acceptable (Freddie also had to sing things a bit differently after some time), but judging for what I heard of the O2.. it's way worse. Footage of the Brazilian tour: link - the drummer appears right at the start, see if you can identify him. |

His voice is worse here than on your video, and this one is from 1973! |

Won't be able to sing the great old Zep songs? Actually, I'm pretty sure he's not touring as Led Zeppelin because he's busy with "some woman-singer" – or Allison Krauss, if you want to get technical – and is more focused on his solo career. Why should he turn his back on the career he's been building since Led Zeppelin disbanded anyway? He's calling the shots, he's clearly enjoying what he's doing, so why throw that all away for a glorified nostalgia trip? More power to him, really. And I personally thought "Raising Sand" with Allison Krauss was one of the best albums released last year. Sure he can't reach the vocal power he had in his prime, but to have screeched his way through those songs, or even any of his solo songs, would've defeated the point entirely. I listened to the Led Zeppelin show from last year, and while it was initially touch and go, they really settled into a groove early on, and his vocals were still pretty decent. Considering he's nearing his 60s, his voice has held up rather well. |

Porl Thompson of The Cure wasn't in the band anymore, and I think that the orchestra was a bit smaller than what was in the DVD, not sure, but everything else was the same. If I can remember well the bass player also had some resemblance with JPJ in the earlier days... at least from where I was. Raf: and that was the last song! Weird is that Plant was in the same festival 2 years before as a solo artist but his concert wasn't as good as this one... This reunion gig was more like a tribute to the Atlantic guy than actually a reunion, and I guess Plant was upset with all the fuss and hype and talks about a bigger tour. |

Maybe I've been coincidentally drunk on every occasion that I've watched stuff from the O2 gig. He sounded fine to me. I think people are remembering his voice through Joplin-coloured hearing aids, to be honest. His voice did change in the 70's, doesn't anyone remember this? It's been a very long time since he sounded like the bloke that recorded Heartbreaker or Whole Lotta Love. Again, I've probably been drunk all this time because I actually liked the change in his voice! Hehe. But I also like Ted Neeley, and I've been told he sounds like cats screeching and God only knows what else.... meh. I'd like to see a screeching cat nail this stuff Anyway. I hope Page breaks his hand again or something. What I'd really like is for them to pick a good singer but it won't happen. They'll either pick an established friend who just .... sucks.... or they'll go with a young guy who'll suck just as hard. So I'm hoping for a hand fracture. |

What surprises me is that John Paul Jones is now involved. I always thought that after the debacle of Page/Plant in the mid 90s (well, with him being ignored for inclusion) that he was more determined to work on his solo stuff than to work with his former band members. Evidently, things have been patched up, but I was more interested in hearing another solo album than him touring as part of a bastardized Led Zeppelin. Ah well. And I agree with you Zeb ... Plant's voice got less screechy as time went on, due to a throat operation at some point in the late 70s. It's evident on the In Through The Out Door album, which ranks as one of my favorite Led Zep albums. (Don't shoot me!) |
john bodega 15.11.2008 02:27 |
Ha! You shall suffer no bullets from I, it's a fine album. To this day I don't understand a WORD of what he says on Carouselambra, but I've deliberately avoided looking up the lyrics. I just like the tune I guess. |
Marcos Napier 15.11.2008 10:14 |
Some singers have never changed their voices (noticeable changes, at least), although they aren't "singers", like Paul McCartney (which is near his 70's), Dave Gilmour... and some have changed just a little - Jagger. In these 96 concerts (12 years is a long time), there were occasional "peaks" where he couldnt reach the right notes at certain songs, but overall it was very close to the "original source", as I said in his previous concert of 94 it wasn't like that - maybe a rest before the 96 concerts is what made it sound better? In the O2 what I felt was that he looked extremely bored. |
