This might have been even posted in the past, but I'm lazy. What are the highs and lows of the studio albums in your opinion? I don't mean "which song is better and which one sucks", but more like in terms of the whole album. "Live" albums aren't here because they are far from being live anyway. Like this: Queen good: as many first albums of great bands, it already shows what was coming. bad: the inexperience with the studio. If done a couple years later, it could be better. Queen II good: a great "concept" album. bad: again, it suffers with the production, recording and mixing. Sheer Heart Attack: good: it's a very fine rock'n'roll album. bad: they were all about to explode, so it's a bit too short for what they all had to offer. ANATO: good: is there anything left to say? bad: it should have been a triple album. ADATR: good: it's even better than the previous one. Their peak. bad: You and I should have been a single. News of the World: good: very mature, and they took advantage of being a supergroup then. bad: not sure if there's any, maybe it should be a bit longer too. Jazz: good: a very good example of 70's pop (not that it's a bad thing, or that it should be a disco record). bad: the sound quality, it's awful considering that they could do much better, they weren't doing their first record this time. Flash Gordon: good: finally they tried synths, at least to see if they would work or not with their songs. bad: the album is as good as the movie. The Game: good: it's a well done transition record, from the traditional rock to something more towards the radio pop, and it has elements of both. bad: overproduction in some points, and some songs are too "weak". Hot Space: good: nice try, guys. bad: nice try, guys. Better luck next time. The works: good: it's as long as an EP. bad: it should have been a bonus record included with Hot Space or something. Old songs reappearing as "new" ones (Man on the prowl/ITTWWC), the extremely annoying screaming in songs like It's a hard life... and so on. AKOM: good: it is what The works should have been. Refreshing, if not perfect. bad: it's a bit too common, it doesn't stand out. The Miracle: good: some interesting songs here and there, but not that often. bad: overproduced, in a 80's way. Too many clichés. Innuendo: good: there is some light at the end of the tunnel. It's too late, though. bad: a few overdramatic songs could have been replaced, and the album could sound a bit more happier than it was. MIH: good: it was good to hear some songs in their "Queen" version. bad: it wasn't really necessary to be released. TCR: good: A for effort. bad: Z for results. |

Dude, you are on another planet with some of those comments, I sometimes think that some fans would only be happy if Queen stuck to one or two styles and never varied. Queen I is just about the perfect Debut album, and Queen II is not only the equal greatest album of all time ( with Grace by Jeff Buckley) but it's production is out of this world... And albums being too short? How can that be a negative? Do you want less than great songs just to fatten an album up? And what hapeened to 'Less is More'? I can think of a few songs that maybe shud've been left out, but when an album finishes, I don't think to myself, oh, I wish there was more... I just put on another album. So, my reiew of you review: Good: At least you care enough to try Bad: Far too dismissive and personalised to your tastes. |

Oh, and regarding Innuendo, I'd like to see you make a 'happier' album if you knew you may not live to see the end of it, let alone can hardly get up out of bed to sing on it... |

Queen Nice debut. The production sounds a bit dated now. Queen II Great follow up. Set the bar for future releases. They discover their voice Sheer Heart Attack: Very good. Most everything works well here. ANATO: A masterpiece. What more is there left to say. ADATR: Another masterpiece and my personal favorite. News of the World: A solid effort. Their minimalist period. A few songs sound like demos though. Jazz: Below average. Very unfocused and flat sounding. They bring back Roy Thomas Baker, but his touch is nowhere to be found. Flash Gordon: Nothing special about this. Typical sounding soundtrack of that era. The Game: Good: Their transition period. They incorporate new things, but instead of forging new ground, they mimic what others were doing at the time. The production sounds compressed. Hot Space: Embarrassing. Not so much with the choice of music style, but they it was presented. Instead of taking disco/funk/dance and making it their own they simply copy what others had done. The production is terrible. Had they recorded the songs like their live versions, it probably would have faired better. The works: A joke! There is nothing more pathetic than when an artist rips themselves off. A bunch of retreads that sound stale, tired & uninspired. AKOM: Boring, boring & boring. Four individuals simply going through the motions. A complete and utter disaster. In my opinion their absolute worst album. The Miracle: Below average. Better than their three predecessors and the production is good. Was billed as a ‘return to their rock roots” but there is not much rock on it. Too many embarrassing moments. Innuendo: Excellent. Other than the one hiccup (Delilah) everything is well thought out and presented. Too bad it took a great tragedy to bring this about. MIH: It sounds like what it is. “A bunch of leftovers” |

I find it amazing that these "fans" are claiming that Queen put out just as many crap albums as they did good ones, because that's simply not true. Perhaps "Classic Rock" fans should avoid this thread. |

Well I agree that the first 7 or so albums are the best, with innuendo thrown in for good measure, but I am realistic enough to know that they couldn't sound 'Seventies' in the Eighties but still sounded better than 99.9% of the gobshite the Eighties called 'music' Almost any other band from that pathetic period, sound like they're from that period, but IMO Queen don't. Flash sounds NOTHING like the standard soundtrack form the Eighties as Flash sounds good and I hate watching Eighties movies because of the soundtracks. Plus there are so few bands that actually even survived the transition from the Seventies to the Eighties that Queen deserve recognition just for that. IMO Hot Space is a great album, and only adds to the diversity Queen embodied. You can dislike anything you want to, but you have to account for changing tastes during those times and accept that thay had to tone it all down to survive. |

I find it amazing that fans must have to be brainwashed that much and that often. |

Dude, you are on another planet with some of those comments (...) Queen I is just about the perfect Debut album, and Queen II is not only the equal greatest album of all time ( with Grace by Jeff Buckley) but it's production is out of this world...Who's in another planet? I think I said about the same thing, except that bit about the production of Queen II. I said it could have been BETTER, not that it was BAD. The fact that the production could be better (could it?) is a bad part of a nearly perfect album. And albums being too short? How can that be a negative? Do you want less than great songs just to fatten an album up?I think you need a bit more of intelligence I suppose. The fact of saying that the album "needed" more songs (it didn't, actually) is something that clearly states that it's not a negative comment - it's so good, that we (I, at least) wanted some more. And who said the songs would be fill-ins? And what hapeened to 'Less is More'?It started around 1976, with the punk movement. Bad: Far too dismissive and personalised to your tastes. Thank God. |

Queen good: A great sophisticated debut album. bad: Could of used a love ballad. There should of been some promotion (but that's the record company's fault!) Queen II good: Really sophisticated and has a nice single bad: Some of the songs are a bit too long. They should of released March Of The Black Queen as a single. Sheer Heart Attack: good: It's wonderful bad: Vocals on 'Lap Of The Gods' A Night At The Opera: good: It contains some nice tracks. bad: I consider God Save The Queen, Good Company, and Sweet Lady as filler. And also, Freddie's two vaudville songs are too much for an album. Could of used one of them on Innuendo. The Prophet's Song has a lame bit of "Now I know" for far too long. It ruins the song. A Day At The Races: good: Less filler than A Night At The Opera, thank goodness! bad: Too many love songs, actually! I think Freddie used up too many of his love songs in the 70s instead of saving them in his mind for the 80s. News of the World: good: Most of it's pretty great. bad: Sleeping On The Sidewalk Jazz: good: I like the album quite a lot. bad: Dead On Time should of been a single in the USA. Flash Gordon: good: It's okay. bad: Could of used some more songs with lyrics. They did it six years later on Highlander! The Game: good: Commercial quality, lots of catchy stuff. bad: No hard rock on this album. I don't think Dragon Attack is hard rock... I think it's filler! Same with Don't Try Suicide. Hot Space: good: Everything. bad: I love this album very much. I think the promotion sucked for it though, and the wrong singles were chosen. Put Out The Fire wasn't a single and still made it on the mainstream rock charts, so it's obvious it could of been Queen's rock hit for 1982 if it was released as a single! The Works: good: The singles for it were really great singles. bad: Keep Passing The Open Windows wasn't too great! There weren't too many songs on the album, only 9! Needed a few more. A Kind Of Magic: good: Good songs. bad: Too many singles. 9 album tracks with 7 singles? Something like that anyway. And they should of released Friends Will Be Friends in the USA, I don't know why Capitol chose Pain Is So Close To Pleasure...... it's a great song, but they could of released both! And at the time, when they did release Pain Is So Close To Pleasure, they did it without a video. That's a no-no in the USA. It's missing that mainstream quality rock song though. Missing a Freddie love ballad as well. The original version of A Kind Of Magic should of been added as the last track on the album. The Miracle: good: Fun, catchy. bad: Not enough sophistication. Missing a Freddie ballad. There's a few fillers. My Life Has Been Saved should of been on the album. I also don't like Stealin' or Hang On In There or Chinese Torture, so I'm glad they were left on the album when it was first released. Freddie sang in a hard rock style most of the time, yet there was too many keyboards and drum machines going around. Was It All Worth It? should of been a single instead of The Invisible Man. Innuendo: good: It's a very touching album. Sophisticated too! Delilah is a song only sophisticated people will understand and appreciate. Also has Queen's heavy metal song 'The Hitman' on it. bad: Innuendo, the song, should of been released as a retail single in the USA instead of just a radio promo. These Are The Days Of Our Lives should of been on vinyl and/or CD, instead of just being released as a cassette single. The Hitman should of been a single. They had plenty of time to make videos for 'The Show Must Go On'.... but failed to do so, and when they decided they were going to release it as a single, it was just too late for them to do so. They could of done it back in January of 91 if they wanted. Made In Heaven: good: Great songs. Though, because they had Made In Heaven and I Was Born To Love You on the album, Mr. Bad Guy went out of print for some damn reason. bad: Every song Freddie wrote, had Queen as the writer, which is fine, BUT, when Brian contributed to Mother Love, he just couldn't let it be sold as a Queen written song. He also does this with I Want It All after Freddie died, so much for sticking with Freddie's decision... Brian, that greedy bastard! Also, not the regular Torpedo Twins video clips, but the British Films videos to the songs sucked pretty much. Another problem here, is that they couldn't of worked on some other unreleased songs for the album, instead of re-making the music to solo songs???? |
