Those movies were mediocre and over hyped.
It takes more than an iconic performance to make a movie good. 'Scarface' might have been one of Pacino's greatest performances but it's still a pile of shit.
In this case, had someone else received the role of Jack Sparrow other than Johnny Depp, the first one would have bombed so bad that making sequels would be out of the question.
Seriously speaking, everytime I hear anything good about any of the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movies, all I hear is some fangirl going:
I LOVE JACK SPARROW!! JOHNNY DEPP IS SO AWESOME!!
I won't deny that Johnny Depp is stunning in those movies, but never once I've heard, "I love the storyline", "I like the concept", or "I like the plot".

I think it's kind of like a James Bond movie in that the plot is secondary. It's about the action scenes, seeing Johnny Depp swing on a rope from one ship to the other, or the clever escape scenes, the little comedy bits and just the complete fantasy of it. Concentrating on the plot would ruin the movie for you I think because it is not so easy to understand, especially with all the distraction of seeing Johnny Depp!
