Dear all, I got the album today and was relieved and delighted. Hadn’t listen to any online snippets. The lyrics of the title track and some song titles (“Surf’s Up”, in particular) seemed a bit scary (i.e. corny) beforehand, but especially the latter got saved by the actual, somewhat transcendential lyrics. I don’t know much of PR’s work, hence I occasionally add his name in brackets; any further guesses are heartily welcome. Now then, let’s guess the lyric writers, shall we? 1. Cosmos Rockin’: BM. (Yup, in the other thread, there are voices for RT.) 2. Time To Shine: BM? RT? PR? – really no fair guess here, but they seem a tad too inconcrete for Arty. 3. Still Burnin’: BM (despite RT backing vox). Sounds like a song off Another World also due to Paul’s Brianesque phrasing. This similitude of phrasing – even of voices – struck me several times. 4. Small: RT. Sounds like a song off Happiness? (with a tad of late-80ies Jethro Tull added). 5. Warboys: RT 6. We Believe: BM (PR?). The intro sounds like a BM solo song. 7. Call Me: PR. Simplistic r’n’r lyrics. (Again: I don’t know much more than his ‘all right now’ repeated.) 8. Voodoo: PR? BM? (Ah, that blues story-telling thing ... Brian uses that as well.) 9. Some Things That Glitter: RT (PR?) 10. C-lebrity: RT 11. Through The Night: BM (PR?). Nice understated bass-playing! A blessing and a curse they didn’t use a bass player – had they done so, we’d all have screamed murder; this way, it stays in the family, but an additional (melodic) dimension below sometimes is wanting, especially considering the all-around prominent mix of the bass. 12. Say It’s Not True: RT. A beautiful tune! Its heavy use of sound effects certainly sticks out somewhat. 13. Surf’s Up ... School’s Out: RT. Sounds like a song off Electric Fire. A nice surprise that Roger was allowed to pull out his bass distortion again. And, of course, he then comes in with prominent backing vox as well. 14. small reprise: RT Don’t go and shatter all my impressions – here’s one happy sucker who was sorry to hear, years ago, that RT wouldn’t put out any more solo material. In any case, the last third of the album justifies anything. Be that as it may: what are your guesses? Cheers, Jan |

Erin has the correct list. I'm willing to bet. Through the Night is Paul as is Time to Shine. I'm certain that's him on piano on those two tunes as well. There was no collaborative songwriting. I'm sure they added bits and ideas to each other's stuff, but the structural framework of each song was complete when they brought them in. This is according to Paul himself in this clip. link So Paul wrote 5 Brian 4 Roger 4 |

This is coming along nicely! Thanks for the participation so far! Let’s see what we have by now: 1. Cosmos Rockin’: BM: 2 votes RT: 3 votes 2. Time To Shine PR: 3 votes BM: 1 vote PR & BM: 1 vote Let’s go with the notion of ‘no collaborations as far as the initial ideas went’ (cf. the video link Knute posted). 3. Still Burnin’: BM: 4 votes PR & BM: 1 vote 4. Small / 14. small reprise: RT: 2 votes BM: 3 votes 5. Warboys: Paul Ok, Paul having Warboys (A Prayer For Peace) on his live solo album ought to have tipped me off. ;-) 6. We Believe: BM: 5 votes According to an BM interview snippet on Queenpedia, Paul came in with this one. We don’t know, however, whether that refers to the music, to the lyrics or to both. The unusual volume of wordage certainly doesn’t look queenish. – But we can’t all be wrong, now can we? ;-) 7. Call Me: PR: 4 votes Same case as for We Believe. ... Except for the small amount of lyrics here. 8. Voodoo: PR: 5 votes 9. Some Things That Glitter: RT: 1 vote BM: 3 votes PR: 1 vote 10. C-lebrity: Roger Let’s take this for granted, given the interviews and all. 11. Through The Night: BM: 2 votes PR: 3 votes 12. Say It’s Not True: Roger Same case as for C-lebrity. 13. Surf’s Up ... School’s Out: RT: 5 votes We don’t know yet for sure in many cases, so we had better continue guessing and fathoming before further interviews spoil the fun! |

Roger said he wrote "Cosmos Rockin", in a radio interview, on 04-sept-2008, if I recall correctly. I'll take his word for that :) Cheers, Ogre- |

I will concede to Erin and Knute, because they seem to be able to pick out Paul's style better than I can. And if Knute says that Paul said there were no true collaborations on the album, then I believe him too! I still say 'Say It's Not True' was Roger's...! ;) |

The actual quote from the magazine is this: "Paul has contributed some lovely stuff that people might compare to our Sheer Heart Attack days, including a great little ditty titled Call Me. I won't say it's like Killer Queen but it has that same lightness. There's also another called We Believe, which is fairly upbeat." The comment about We Believe was a separate statement. Does anyone else think the tune/rhythm to We Believe sounds a lot like certain parts of Las Palabras De Amour? I havn't listened to LPDA in quite a while but when I heard We Believe I immediately thought they sounded similar in parts. Not that this is not a bad thing of course, I've always really liked Las Palabras and after a few listens I must say that We Believe is definitely growing on me. It is a bit preachy and the words a little cheesy though. Defo chalk this one up to Dr May |
Martin Packer 17.09.2008 02:40 |
Yes, I can see the similarity to Los Palabros De Amour. And I like it. So far I've liked all the songs after only 1 play. And I still like them after 3. |
Martin Packer 17.09.2008 04:16 |
"We Believe" to me is outstanding... A nice Hegelian dialectic here (or is it trialectic?) :-) "I believe" - thesis "You believe" - antithesis "Some people believe" - second antithesis "We believe" - synthesis |

I ain't sure, but let's just blow the dust away from our 'The Stonk' releases, listen to them few times and then listen to 'Cosmos Rockin''... I'd say Bri, though maybe both of Queenies. |
Martin Packer 22.09.2008 04:57 |
If you nose around on Brian's Soapbox there's a lot more definitive information on who wrote what. |
Togg 23.09.2008 05:33 |
The one I question is Small, in some ways the lyrics sound like Paul, however the feel seems more like Brian? |
zaiga 23.09.2008 07:59 |
Small reminds me a lot of Seagull, so I'd guess it was a Paul song. We Believe is written by Brian, see the Roger interview on BrianMay.com |

I'd say Bri, though maybe both of Queenies.I would say it is Brian's because of the 50's feel to it, reminiscent of "The Stonk" and "Red Special" (exclusive CD released by Brian in Japan in 1998). I could also say it is by Brian and Roger, because of it's similarities to "I Go Crazy". But then Roger said it was his and that Brian "through in some riffs" or something like that. Could he be mistaken? Cheers, Ogre- |

I still say 'Small' and 'Some Things That Glitter' are unmistakably Brian. The latter especially because the piano intro is reminiscent of 'Another World'. |

In the wikipedia article I added one of the "definite hits". By "definite hit" I mean one where one of the band has confirmed whose it is. It'd be great if someone else added to that. And perhaps added citations. I'd do it but unfortunately right now I really haven't the time. :-( And I think we should encourage the band to spill the beans a bit more - now the album's out. |

It’s nice to get new guesses also in the Q+PR Tour sub-forum. I’ve incorporated all the votes cast (only the first time around, though, Lester ;-), I’ve followed up on the interviews suggested in this thread and I split up co-writing guesses with one vote for each writer suggested since one of the interviews stated that all of the writers came in with their own material before working on it as a band. Where we had confirmation in any interview, the votes cast are (sadly) disregarded. Confirmed: 1. Cosmos Rockin’: Roger 5. Warboys: Paul 6. We Believe: Brian 7. Call Me: Paul 10. C-lebrity: Roger 12. Say It’s Not True: Roger The plot thickens: 2. Time To Shine PR: 6 votes BM: 3 vote 3. Still Burnin’ BM: 6 votes PR: 1 vote 4. Small / 14. small reprise RT: 4 votes BM: 2 votes PR: 1 votes 8. Looks like we can put this all to rest now, and the guesses become confirmations. In the thread "Why the mystery over who wrote what?" in the General Discussion, doxonrox provided a list of who wrote what, based on the new booklet for the US version of TCR:
doxonrox wrote:Lester Burnham wrote: The UK copies only credited all songs to "Queen + Paul Rodgers".How strange. Well, here's the first person credited on the US release, which confirms alot of the conjecture except the first tune: 1. Cosmos Rockin (Taylor) 2. Time to Shine (Rodgers) 3. Still Burnin (May) 4. Small (Taylor) 5. Warboys (Rodgers) 6. We Believe (May) 7. Call Me (Rodgers) 8. Voodoo (Rodgers) 9. Some Things That Glitter (May) 10. C-lebrity (Taylor) 11. Through the Night (Rodgers) 12. Say It's Not True (Taylor) 13. Surf's Up...School's Out (Taylor) 14. Small Reprise (Taylor) It make sense, although I always thought that Cosmos Rockin' was Brian. Hope this helps from this side of the pond! Considering I've got the UK version, because I'm an impatient bastard and couldn't wait until yesterday, this was a revelation to me. But the only surprise was that Roger wrote 'Small' -- I could've sworn it was Brian! But I'm glad to see that Brian wrote 'Glitter'. |
