i realy want that synth. in my opinion i think its one of the best synthezisers ever(it isnt better than the Korg M1 but never mind that) The sounds you hear on records from the 80s are 99 out of 100 times Simmons drums roland synths AND the DX7. In the song: Whats Love Got To DO With It,You can hear a harmonica and thats the dx7(i have that patch loaded on my fm8) and offcourse the Time of my life sound From the dirty dancing soundtrack. Thats the electric piano. The strings on One Vision is the dx7 The only thing i dislike about the DX is that it ISNT multi-timbral but nevertheless its an Cosmos rocking machine:P I wonder if Queen(SORT OF) still uses old synths on their records or if they do it with(like Jean michel jarre did with Teo and Tea) Pro-tools Roland mc-505 I think that spike uses the korg triton extreme 88 like he does on tour. i just wanted to share this with you. Bye. |

My brother bought one. Expensive, considering he doesn't even play keyboards that often, but it's great fun to dick around with. |
BradJarre 12.05.2008 07:46 |
I dont think that the DX is to expensive. for 200-300 bucks you can buy one in pretty good condition..And it is a good value of money. |

While I'm a little suspicious that this is coming from the same guy who has the Yamaha PSR whatever...
The DX-7 definitely falls in the category of a "Classic" synth, primiraly because it was one of the first boards to be based on "FM Synthesis", while not really incorporating the true definition of it.
The problem with buying one of these old boards, is just WHICH version of the board you get. And you can download true FM synthesis as well as every patch on the DX, so why would you buy one? Unless you were simply playing it stand alone or are s synth enthusiast, I wouldn't buy one.
One other drawback, and it's major. If you plan to use this for recording and MIDI applications, forget it. Won't work. Long story.

BradJarre 12.05.2008 10:51 |
the guy who started the tread(me) also got the psr-18 psr-300 psr-500 psr-530 and ctk-731. the dx-7II is a cool machine but its expensive. The normal dx7 with flightcase rom cartridge and manual is 250-300 bucks. the dx7II is 400-500bucks. and the only extra is Floppydrive and BI-timbral. I downloaded FM8(crack) and i have 400 banks with only dx-7 sounds so i dont realy need a real one. The only reason that i want one is because i can say:HEEEY PEOPLE I GOT THE DX7!!! |

What about the Yamaha Tyros 2 one? I believe that's a hell of a keyboard. I don't have it. I only have a stupid Roland E-38, from 1995. It quite sucks. |

But I stopped buying keyboard "workstations" a while ago, and mainly went for the sound engine. The Tyros is just Yamaha's answer to Roland's Fantom. But the Korg Oasys seems to be the role-model for all these types... If you have seven grand to blow. The best sounds in keyboards right now? Electric Piano / Wurlizter..............Nord Electro 2 Acoustic Piano..........................Roland XV-88 Synths...........................toss up: Nord Lead/Wave or Access Virus B-3...........................................Nord Electro 2 or Hammond XK-3 My opinion. FYI, The Roland E-38 is one of the "Arranger" keyboard series that Roland put out to attack the Casio market. Very similar to Bradley's CTK series. It is in no way to be confused with the quality and pro features that the XP, XV, JV, and Fantom offer, and you would "feel" the difference within seconds, Rick. And if you bought the Tyros? You would probably need smelling salts for the first few days. |

This is a nice place to hear what all those piano synths sound like - link Adam. |

Roland keyboards where good until the G-70,After that they became shit. Listen to the tyros-2 or the Korg pa2xpro these machines are awesome. Synthesizers: Roland fantom=shit Korg triton/oasys=awesome. Yamaha motif=awesome. Sorry guys i cant help it i hate roland. |
Micrówave 12.05.2008 16:51 |
No prob, Rick. I just didn't want you to think that that was a true test of Roland. Apparantly ol' Bradley doesn't like 'em... but OBVIOUSLY he hasn't played the Fantom. To call it Shit and the Motif Awesome should pretty much sum that up. And Bradley, if Roland is so "shit" find me another keyboard UNDER $3000 to offer a 128MB dedicated piano patch? I "passed" on the new Nord Stage because it's acoustic pianos (which are reviewed as some of the best) sounded thin, including their new Steinway D patch. |
BradJarre 12.05.2008 17:18 |
I played the fantom the x8 and the x6 but i played them for about 10 minutes the piano is awesome(the same as in the G-70) but i think that the korgs for the pricerange are a bit better. |
