I think here we talk a lot about classic rock bands but we devote little time to the new acts. A while ago I came across this wonderful album called 'Funeral' by the Arcade Fire, with beautifully produced musical arrangements sort of reminiscent of Bowie's glam rock days. I think a lot of Queen fans would enjoy it. Wolfmother for those who don't know them comes across as the next Led Zeppelin. Not only is their sound very Zep like, but they're live performances are quite electryfing as well. Franz Ferdinand I don't need to even mention how great they are, so if you are one of those living under the Classic Rock underground shelter for the past 5 years, you better give them a listen. Other great new acts I'd recommend are Silversun Pickups, Cold War Kids, and even though I absolutely dread most of the whole nu-punk/emo scene, I have to admit that Paramore is damn good. That chick Haylee truly knows how to belt out a tune. |

Good choice for a topic! I suggest Coheed and Cambria, a bloody good band indeed. If you like your guitar tunes served up quick, strong and complex then i suggest a bit of DragonForce. Newton Faulkner is pretty awesome as well, one of the best live performers i'ver ever seen. He finished his set by doing the whole of Bohemian Rhapsody on an acoustic guitar! Annnnnnnnnddd for a widely unknown artist i suggest Andy McKee, great acoustic player. |

I agree fully with you about Franz Ferdinand ("Outsiders" = rhythm orgasm! Perfect drums and perfect bass, especially live!) and Arcade Fire. "Wake Up" used to be my favorite Arcade Fire song, but after hearing the full album a couple of times, I realised most of the album is a potential favorite song. I'll give the second album a listen sometime soon. And Franz Ferdinand... Probably the best new indie band. Much better than the Strokes, and obviously, better than the Franz Ferdinand wannabes that came up after they released their first album. Not to mention they're REALLY good on stage!!! I'd like to add "Dirty Pretty Things". They have released an EP and an album, and both of them are worth listening. They're practically a reformed Libertines without Pete Doherty, and to be honest, they're a million times than The Libertines. The first time I heard them I had no clue I was hearing some people who were already kinda famous, I could swear on my life they were just a garage band - and I love their sound! These are the videos for the singles they've released so far: Bang Bang You're Dead link Deadwood link Wondering link If on one hand the recent indie wave brought lots of shitty pop bands who look all the same, on the other hand Franz Ferdinand, Arcade Fire, Dirty Pretty Things and a few others definitely make it worth it! *edit* I really gotta listen to some Plain White T's stuff other than Hey There Delilah. They must have some other good stuff! :) And thank you for the Led Zeppish suggestion, Dan! I'll give them a try as well! |

the Hoosiers are pretty good, as are the Feeling.been listening to Amy MacDonald's new cd of late which is worth a gander at [esp Mr Rock n Roll].the new song by david jordon is quite catchy although it does sound like israel's eurovision entry and newton faulkner is in the same vein as jack johnson if you are into that type of thing. glad im not the only one that finds hey there delilah annoying, the lyrics are creepy too.its nearly as bad lyricly as the brotherhood of man's "save all your kisses for me".. |

Got a few recommendations under my skirt. One moment... The Mars Volta are a fairly astonishing band. Horrible lyrics (stream-of-consciousness babble run through a blender) but their music is incredible. Perhaps they are no longer fashionably obscure (thanks to Stephen Colbert) but The Decemberists are top-notch. Also a big Rufus Wainwright fan. The man has the voice of twelve angels and his orchestrations are unparalleled in richness and workable complexity. Lake of Tears are a gothic/prog metal band from (where else?) Scandanavia. They've got a wonderful lead vocalist/lyricist and some of the tastiest guitar/keyboard combos around. Marcy Playground kicks complete ass. Don't listen to 'Sex and Candy.' Worst song they ever did. Immerse yourself in 'Shapeshifter' or 'MP3' and drift away on the goodness. Gotta love The Shins. Right? Right? Also, Witchcraft. What Wolfmother is to reviving Zeppelin's signature tone Witchcraft is to summoning the long-dead spirit of classic Black Sabbath. Yum. |

I hope I dont get slammed for my choices, but I recommend the following.=) 1. Rob Zombie- He is the savior of metal music... his work is very creative and original. every one of his songs are like a mini horror story, plus they all have a funky beat to dance to! 2.Green Day- People usually say that Green Day is overrated, but before you say that, you must listen to American Idiot as a whole...its simply amazing. Everything from Kerplunk! on is excellent!=) 3. Buckcherry- Ok Sorry's airplay did get annoying but you gotta admit it's purty good.=) Crazy Bitch is a fun song to dance to with catchy lyrics, and Lit Up sounds like a neo Van Halen song.=) OH and Everything is just beautiful...I highly recommend it! Plus there is many other good bands as well such as Zombina and the Skeletones, Foo Fighters, and Marilyn Manson.=P |

Nearly 2 decades!) Those aren't really "new". ;) They may be having their biggest glories nowadays, they may be topping the charts nowadays - but Queen was topping the charts in 1991 and that didn't make them a new band back then. ;) Having said that, I really like the Foo Fighters (even more than I like Nirvana, to be honest), and Green Day are quite enjoyable too! :) Muse are talented, but for some reason I'm not really into them. |

Wolfmother and Withcraft can pull some decent tricks, and I have a sneaking suspicion that both bands have a spark of truly original musicality buried beneath their sonic hero worship. My 'Yum' represents the moments when these original moments shine through the tired soundscape (looking back I see that point was completely un-made in my post).LozlanTheMage wrote: What Wolfmother is to reviving Zeppelin's signature tone Witchcraft is to summoning the long-dead spirit of classic Black Sabbath. Liam Finn. He is the son of the kiwi great, Neil Finn (Crowded House, Split Enz). His debut album called I'll Be Lightning is kind of a mix of folk/alternative, and you can tell he's inherrited his father and uncle's talent because he sings and pretty much plays all the instruments on the album as well. Overall it's a really great album and one that is easy to listen to (but not like easy-listening mainstream crap). That stands as the only new (and by new I mean came out 2007 and beyond) music I can say that I really, really like. |

OK, for those of you who are into the contemporary alternative/indie scene I strongly recommend these two bands I saw when they opened for Muse. THE LIKE link IMMIGRANT link I got the chance to meet both bands after the show, and the Immigrant guys were such cool dudes, and the girls from The Like were just lovely. However, I TRULY HAVE TO TRULY STRONGLY RECOMMEND: RODRIGO & GRABRIELA link If you guys love acoustic guitar virtuosity, this is for you. They're just quite simply amazing. Rodrigo & Gabriela started out in Mexico as part of a metal band with poor luck getting signed, they decided to move to Ireland knowing that the Dublin scene had the doors wide open for new musical acts. Instead of following their heavy metal roots, they decided to go for an acoustic flamenco style, and the rest is history. |
