I am travelling to the States (Florida to be precise) in the next few weeks for a vacation (can’t wait)
I have been looking on my cell phone (mobile as we call them in the UK) and the costs for making a call in the States on my current deal are very very expensive.
If I have to ring home, or even use my own phone for calling, for example my resort for the shuttle service they provide.
I was wondering if there is anything I can get either before or when we arrive, like a pre paid or pay as you go phone (yes the phone and a sim card)
Just wondered if this would work out cheaper, to even call in Florida while I’m there on my own contract would cost £1.37 (about $2.80) that to me seems expensive!
And also if anyone has any tips where to go (apart from the obvious – Disney, Universal etc, etc), maybe for meals and nights out (clubs, bars, live music)
thanks in advance

When I was last there, there was plenty of places doing deals on phones. In particular inside the Florida Mall itself.
Like you, I am from the UK and I too was gonna use my own phone over there. But like you said it was gonna work out expensive.
By the way, Florida is a brilliant place to go for a holiday. Didnt do any nightclubs or that as I just stuck to the parks and stuff.
Hi!
Unfortunately it is going to be expensive to use your cell phone while you are here...there isn't much of a way around it. (At least yours will work though....mine won't even work when I'm in the UK in December)
One thing you might want to look into is TracPhone. You can pick these up at any store (K-Mart, Target, anyplace like that). It's a phone and you pre-pay minutes into it...obviously the phone is nothing fancy, but it does work if you are just using the phone for emergencies, and you won't feel too bad about throwing it away when you go back home.
Don't get a phone card to go with your cell phone though...it won't make the calls any cheaper and you will still be using up minutes on your phone, even though you are using a phone card.
You might also look into a phone card. There will surely be places to pick these up in the Airport either before you take off or after you land.
You may be able to get one while you're still at home. Try the link below. link
Many thanks for the replies guys
I used a phone card in Boston last year when I went there - it was OK but a cell (mobile) is just the convenience of not having to find a public phone
I will try the one you mentioned Historygirl - that sounds exactly what I could do with.... I looked on walmart and they are doing phones for $40
Will that include a card or will I then have to put minutes or credit on it ?
Yeah, those $40 are probably the TracPhones I'm talking about.
You'll have to buy a card separately, but they have them right next to the phones in the display. For $70 you should be able to get the phone and a card with about $30 in minutes on it.
Then you just get another card when you run out.
Can't tell you about anything in Florida to see as I've never been there, but I've always heard about this place called the Coral Castle which is supposed to be pretty cool. You may want to check it out! link
