I don't see how that's "insensitive" - it's just true (and phrased in a sensitive way). It's not like he said, "Well if you go around having unprotected sex with shitloads of people you don't know, what the fuck do you expect ?! - He deserved it, that idiot." |

goinback 12.08.2007 15:45 |
I think Freddie himself would have agreed with it...I think Phil was trying to be educational by stating a fact rather than being judgmental. To Freddie's credit, once everyone actually KNEW about AIDS, Freddie seemed to quit doing those things. |

Well I think it was. I saw on you tube Freddie's death, but can't find it enymore. Think that actually doesn't exsist enymore...It was really sad, people were in front of his house, fans....al were crying, and there was an short interview with Phill. I think he said that too much cold. O.K. to say it after sometime, but then...NO! Freddie...well you can't blame him. He was looking for love. He was wild on stage. but everyone said, even he said that private he is not like that, that he is very shy and emotional. He just wasn't lucky. Look at the George Michale and Elton John, they are ok.... And when he found Jim-love that he was looking for, he found out he has AIDS... It is so sad, pearson so full of life, had that destiny. So either Jim wasn't the "love" he was looking for - or love wasn't what he was looking for in the first place. |
Dusta 12.08.2007 19:49 |
I sort of came of age during that time, having been born in '63, and, I'm afraid to say that promiscuity was simply a sign o'the times, in both the gay and straight communities. Not everyone subscribed to this lifestyle, however, many did, and, I am certain Phil Collins was very much aware of this. I can't think why he thought it pertinent to mention Freddie's lifestyle at that particular time. |

You have to take things into account - such as people's motives for speaking and how they perceive things. Jim Hutton wasn't very fond of Mary Austin, but one shouldn't simply take his word for it. He was human - good things and bad things, and I think it's much healthier to view him this way. If you don't, you're viewing an idol, not Freddie. |

He later redeemed himself by hiring Stewart Copeland JUST to play hi-hat on Red Rain. I don't think he even called Phil to tell him about So. Although some believe that Su-Su-Sussudio was payback to Peter for taking away his cymbals for the entire PG3 album. Phil later told Peter to sing these lines for the new Genesis reunion album and then put out the 12" dance mix instead. |

Funny that I'm commenting on this now, but it was insensitive. I get what he was trying to do, but you can't tell the public has much you admire someone and then pretty much call them a whore in the same sentence. It would have been better for Collins to say "I will take part in the fight of HIV/AIDS, as I know Freddie would have wanted". |

Then why not just say, "Freddie is teaching us a lesson today and we need to educate ourselves and fight against HIV/AIDS. It's not the message that was insensitive, it was the way it was presented.

I dont think Mr. Collins was right. It was, as mentioned, not a grown man's attitude to the bereaved. Also its a truthful statement but only to some degree . We know that gay men by that time (and in certain parts of the globe) were free to be as promiscuous as every other human being, wanted. Apparently some complications would appear. Since we are talking about men exclusively , of course the amount of physical tension-quick relief is going to take a different level, especially considering the times. After suppression its almost the "low of physics" that people will get to the under end of the spectrum when opportunity hits. And that was the case through those years ( mid 70's to mid 80's). Now, the very unfortunate thing is, that this virus appeared at those re-formational years. And so many people including FM payed a tremendously high price because they almost didn't know or realized the danger when it was too late. If it was Hepatitis C it would have been a totally different story. And a very simple one if we are talking about cases like FM. Its not even comparable. |

Collins was only speaking the truth, whether we like it or not. Saying that Freddie effectively was more likely to catch AIDS with his lifestyle is no more contentious than saying Collins was susceptible to a very costly divorce by marrying an innocent young foreign girl about half his age. Both were predictable, and equally avoidable, but human nature as it is tends to follow the 'it won't happen to me' gene far too often for our own good. |
AlbaNo1 14.03.2013 15:59 |
Right, so if while the ink was not yet dry on Phil Collins divorce papers some other veteran rock star came out and says he was basically asking for it, I dont think Collins would have taken to kindly to it. And thats not even close to being an equivalent to commenting on someones death. I remember Collins on the Magic Years video saying about Freddie "you dont get too many people like him" wink wink. Bit of a pompous little arse if you ask me.I completely agree. Plus, compared to other rock starts of that time, Queen and Freddie were almost tame! Have you read Keith Richard's 'Life'? There is a reason for the saying 'sex, drugs, and rock and roll'. So basically Freddie was just doing what every other rock star did, but since he was gay and developed AIDS, he became the poster-child for sexual promiscuity. |

I'm guessing you didn't like Phil Collins very much before the document either, right? Perhaps that's somewhat coloured your interpretation? |

He may have even been correct that time as well ; but it doesn't take away from the fact that Phil Collins is a nobody. Case in point - the video for Sssudio. Phil.... John Lennon might have been a 'bastard', and Freddie might've been 'promiscuous', but you're still a cunt. Who made some terrible terrible songs!Phil Collins is one of the very few artists to have a solo career as successful as his band work (Genesis). You may not like his work, but it's undeniable that left an important mark in music. About his remark, perhaps it was a bit too soon to say such a thing, but there's a lot of truth to it. Just watch 'Days of Our Lives'... even when AIDS started to make media buzz, Freddie's attitude towards the disease was careless by claiming "I'll fuck anyone I want". Now don't get me wrong, nobody deserves to die of such a terrible disease, but had Freddie been more concerned about STDs and AIDS itself, he may still be around. |

No one is questioning the truth of the statement, we know it's true. If it wasn't, Freddie Mercury would still be here. The question is was the statement, in it's timeliness, insensitive. Could Collins have waited, I don't know, a couple of days? Everyone who wasn't blind was aware of Mercury's "appetite" for life. It just seemed that Collins was kicking a man when he was down, in this case a dead man. |

He just said what was on everyone's minds, but most people were afraid to say. Come to think of it, it might seem insincere from Brian to go on TV a few days after Freddie died and defend his lifestyle by saying that Freddie was not as promiscuous as people said he was, and yet Brian has said other times that was he was fed up with the amount of excess at Queen parties back in the day... and while he didn't exactly said it was Freddie's choice, we all know it was. |

Like I've said, yes, we've all known of Mercury's lush for life and when he died of AIDS, we knew why, the press even said it, many of us said it, but that day, I'm sorry, it didn't need to be hammered home by Collins. I'm sure some folks on this post weren't the only ones to feel that way. When MTV announced the passing, they gave quotes of all the celebrities that made a comment. When it got to Collins, they cut off the last section of his quote. As for Brian May, the man kept Mercury's secret out of respect. He may know a little more than the general public. We can assume things, but we didn't know him. (Although I will agree with you that May has been a flip-flopper in interviews when it came to other topics) We do know from what Mercury has said in interviews - he's going to live life to the fullest (which included sex) and not have regrets for it. So now that he's dead, the day off, folks feel that they need to vocalize something that Mercury already knew. I'm sorry, that's crap. Collins could have used that moment to educate or say how important it is to get tested, not say I told you so. |
