does anyone here know why neca recalled the seven inch freddie mercury black leather 70's figure? I know it is terrible, looks nothing like him, but I was just wondering if there was more to it than that. I tried to look it up online to find out myself, but came up with nothing. If anyone can clear this up for me, that would be great. Cheers, darlings!!!

NECA Gets Cease and Desist
From Freddie Mercury Estate
March 08, 2007
Steve Gerstman Services, Inc., the licensing agent for the Freddie Mercury estate and Queen Productions Limited, has issued a cease and desist order to NECA, its distributors, and retailers for NECA's 7" Leather Era Freddie Mercury Figure. According to a spokesperson for Steve Gerstman Services, NECA moved to manufacturing and distribution without approval of the figure; it is not a sanctioned product. The company is asking that the figures be taken off sale and returned to NECA, where they will be destroyed.
NECA had previously produced and distributed other Freddie Mercury figures, an 18" and a 7" Magic Tour Freddie, which were approved and licensed.
You can still find a few on eBay. I hadn't got around to buying the black leather version of the figure until I read this post and ordered mine today :)
Wow - I guess that'll be the last NECA Freddie figure. Who would want to continue doing business with someone who made you recall and destroy your product?
holy shit!! that is the most hideous thing i have ever seen!! i don't think the black leather freddie was as bad as that thing. geez. thank you for filling me in on why they were recalled. i have about 3 more of them (long story), if any of you want one. even though it is horrible, i am going to hang on to mine. let me know if anyone is interested. also, i have 3 extra of the wembley 7" too. let me know!!
I have two of them. While I personally don't think the sculpt is THAT bad (it DOES look like Freddie), I can see where it would cause Freddie's estate to pull them. I will add photos of the one I (collectors cover your eyes) opened later today.
I don't have the Leather clad one from the late 70's but I do have the Magic Tour one and on the back of the box it offers a view of the Leather Clad Freddie and I think its not a bad job at all and wouldn't mind having that one as well. I think coming with a champagne glass though is a bit much......
I have to say I think that's a bit of a shame - will there ever be an official figure/statue of freddie that isn't based on the magic tour look? I hope so...
Hmm. Guess HTML is not allowed. Ok, so to view the pics: link link link link link
I have an extra Leather Freddie MOC if anyone is interested: shonis@gmail.com
