This is an 8mm video from the A Day At The Races tour which has been circulating as a silent 12 minute video for decades (and sometimes as a 22 minute video with 10 minutes repeating). As was common at the time, it was filmed by a camera without audio capabilities. One day a couple years ago, I was watching it and I started to pick out which songs were being played. I then decided that someone needed to synch audio to it. After drawing straws with Tilomagnet, P_G, and Lester Burnham (joking, joking!), and after plenty of trial and error, the whole process took a couple months for me to finish, and to this day I'm still pretty happy with it. For decades, this video has circulated as "Los Angeles 3-3-77". However, the 8mm master reel was recently found, and it was labeled simply as "The Forum", but with a Quebec mailing address on it. This leads one to believe the video was actually filmed at the Montreal Forum, not the Los Angeles Forum. The Montreal show was on January 26, 1977. At the time I synched the audio to the video, I was still under the impression that the video was from the Los Angeles 3-3-77 concert, so the majority of the audio is from that show. But since the LA audio is only an hour long, I had to take some bits from a few other shows. Most of the audio had to be speed/pitch corrected to match the speed of the video. Since the video is only 12 minutes long, they're only portions of the songs (film was pretty expensive back then!). The audio is from LA 3-3-77, unless otherwise indicated: Tie Your Mother Down (College Park MD 2-4-77) Ogre Battle Somebody To Love Killer Queen You're My Best Friend Bring Back That Leroy Brown Brighton Rock White Man The Prophet's Song Bohemian Rhapsody (Seattle 3-13-77) Stone Cold Crazy (New York 2-5-77) In The Lap Of The Gods...Revisited (Seattle 3-13-77) Now I'm Here (Seattle 3-13-77) I'm well aware that this video isn't the best possible version it could be. Back when I did this, I didn't have any software to do this kind of editing in lossless DVD quality. I did it with GoldWave and TMPGEnc. So, maybe one day I'll create a better version, perhaps with Seattle as the prominent audio source. But for now, here's the 8mm video from the ADATR tour, presumably from Montreal, with audio mostly from LA (all 3 parts, compressed in .rar format): link link link Enjoy! |

Grooooovy!!! Thank you Sir Bob. Only a real 'true' Queen fan would even consider doing anything of this magnitude. This type of thing is what I would be expecting in the - dare I say it? - box sets that have been talked about since the medieval times. The care and attention that you lavish on something that seems so trivial to most is outstanding. Thank you Sir!!!!! |

What gen are the 8mm film Bob?Cant be from masters surely. Anyway..opinion. Nailed most of the sync pretty well i thourght as video quality is hideously bad.Understandable though. Big obvious sync difference towards the end(looks like wrong verse Bob) Shame about the high pitch squeal on the audio for some of the clips and i noticed a squelch or 2 on others. But that said ,as i do this for a living,i know how long was probably spent on this. The frustration, the "fuck it,6 hours on 30 seconds and i've gotta do it again" happenings etc etc so Bob for effort i would say 10/10 For what you did 9/10 because of that obvious sync difference towards the end & for quality of finished video/audio.. well,we'll keep quiet on that one & hope the masters suface hehe ;) But overal, well done Bob i enjoyed it!! Deleted now.....nasty lossy thing on my PC hahahahaha ;) |
YourValentine 23.05.2007 06:18 |
I think this is the best possible result syncing a mute video with no clues where the recording was cut and without having the actual concert sound - not to mention problems like different tape speed. The video quality is not the point because the audio would fit to any better generation as long as it's the same video. Compared with the old sound this is a 1000% improvement. Well done, Bob. |
tilomagnet 23.05.2007 07:14 |
YourValentine wrote: The video quality is not the point because the audio would fit to any better generation as long as it's the same video. No it wouldn't, because there is always speed drift involved when copying analog sources. If we get the video source one gen closer to the master there might be a slight adjustment necessary to the audio to get it synched up, if we get 3 or 4 gens closer to the original you'd probably have to do a complete re-synch. |
YourValentine 23.05.2007 08:44 |
You are right. But it will still be so much easier to sync the master with Bob's audio because he did all the identification of the songs/parts of the songs. |
Queenman!! 23.05.2007 08:45 |

To match now with the masters would be a doddle. Run the 2 VT streams side by side 1 the master avi & 1 this ,and do the same with the superior audio to the lossy. Adjust to match,..output.
