Today I subscribed for the Brazilian Mathematics Olympics (something like that), and I realised nobody else at school was interested, except for a student who's considered the most nerdy and the most arrogant person who has ever studied there. Last year I tried that crap just for fun and I only scored 3 out of 25 (and I only solved ONE problem, all the others were pure guessing XD), but this year I feel ready to at least manage to get to the 2nd stage. :$ :$ :$ |

I dare you to prove 0.99999....(recurrent) is equal to 1 by the use of arithmetic series. =P (yeah, it's possible and not hard at all) Oh and sing this song to cheer yourself up- A mathematical day In a deep and dark December; I am alone, Gazing with my glasses to the numbers below On a freshly fallen silent drop of ink. I am a nerd, I am an cheaaaaater. I've cheated teachers, A test hard and olympicy, That I may fail. I have no need of teachers; teaching causes pain. Their knowledge and their boogers I disdain. I am a nerd, I am an geeeeeeeeeeeeeek. Sing it to the tune of "I Am A Rock" by Simon And Garfunkel. PS: Mathelympics will make you go limp. =P |

Saif wrote: I dare you to prove 0.99999....(recurrent) is equal to 1 by the use of arithmetic series. =P (yeah, it's possible and not hard at all)I'll be honest, I didn't figure it out by myself, a teacher once dared us to do the same thing at school. Here are 2 ways I rememer: First, I'll call 0.999... "y". y = 0.999... 10y = 10(0.999...) 10y = 9.999... 10y - y = 9.999... - 0.999... 9y = 9 y = 9/9 y = 1 ...as we called 0.999... "y", 0.999... = y = 1 The second way is: 1/9 equals 0.111..., so... 0.111... = 1/9 9(0.111...) = 9 x 1/9 0.999... = 9/9 = 1 I'm almost sure there's another way using fractions as well. But I think I won't have to dig old notes from 2 years ago, right? It's already proved. :-P |
