IMO, they had cheesy editing combing songs and archive footage, but some of the videos weren't so bad. |
PieterMC 25.01.2007 10:15 |
The way that they edit things together drives me nuts. The worst example is Rare Live. |
louvox 25.01.2007 10:18 |
I don't care much for their style either. |

Playing devil's advocate... They had some very nice videos like Days Of Our Lives, I'm Going Slightly Mad (probably the best video they did with Freddie), and some of the Miracle videos (Invisible Man and Breakthru especially) were pretty good too. It was only once Freddie became ill and wouldn't/couldn't do any videos anymore that they had limited resources. As much as I love The Show Must Go On, the video spoils the song for me. As for compilation videos... ugh. Personally, I wish Queen had stuck with David Mallet, because most of his videos were terrific, but the band weren't ever ones to stick with the same director/producer for too long. Hopefully, if QPR decide to do videos for the new album, they'll go with someone besides DoRo. |

I nearly puked at the way how they edited 'Freddie Mercury - The Untold Story' with 'Mustapha playing in the background. The worst for me has to be the archive clip editing on 'One Year Of Love'. |
beautifulsoup 25.01.2007 13:15 |
I find "In My Defence" to be very manipulative, and misrepresentative. The way some of the footage "matches" with the lyrics is extremely tacky in other videos. Best (or should I say *worst*) example of this is in "Too Much Love Will Kill You," on the line "bleed and scream and crawl." And how many times do we want to see that clip of Roger from "I Want to Be Free." Okay, maybe don't answer that, LOL - but it seems to be used way too frequently. |

I just wish they'd bite the bullet and make a video with Freddie - Gollum style. Head replacement technology is pretty good these days, just go for broke. I'm sick and tired of them using the same 2 second clips of Freddie for every music video that comes along!! |
sexmachine 25.01.2007 15:34 |
worst thing that happened to queen video archive stuff for many years ...... and then came greggy boy brooks |
Asterik 25.01.2007 17:14 |
I think they made some great videos. I don't like some of the fast cutting but it probably hepled conceal Fred's illness. I think breakthru IGSM, The Miracle and headlong are memorable and I love In my Defence- it really shows who Freddie was- magnificent. |

I have to agree that they make very good video editing for songs with the resources they have, but they have no sense on what to do with documentaries. It´s boring to watch!! With Queen they never try to appeal the old fans, they only want to bring more new fans, that´s why they use the same footage. Don´t forget, it´s only old footage for us! : )) Take care |

"Your opinions on DoRo" After consulting my lawyer, I have decided against stating my opinion. It would be a violation of public obscenity laws worthy of a life-sentence, according to him. |
rocks. 27.01.2007 11:58 |
Their concept videos arnt bad, those are some of my favourites (breakthru, days of our lives, etc..) but ..the editing together is sort of...done. No more. PLEASE!! Too much.. On the other hand, this guy did an awesome job with no-one but you link <<2003 edit |
thomasquinn 32989 27.01.2007 12:56 |
DoRo did good work...when they were not doing work with Queen. Their Falco-videos are good, for instance. They just didn't do their editing properly when with Queen. And I don't just mean their collage-videos. |
Gratzi 27.01.2007 15:17 |
I think I will leave the Queen - DoRo comments aside, just this once... but I have to say I appeciate their 'Get Up, Stand Up' series... pretty good work... |
darcy-wright 28.01.2007 01:40 |
Under Pressure '99 is pretty good, if on the hits 3 dvd it should be "tidied up" though to make it more cohesive. like the clothing changes for the band and the colouring of the wembley sky to make it night |
Mr. Scully 28.01.2007 04:25 |
When I met Rudi Dolezal, he was very friendly. But when he *intentionally* marked me as "fan from Slovakia" in the Budapest documentary... I will never forgive him. It only proves that the Rare Live shit was intentionally released with all those errors. |
Hank H. 28.01.2007 04:53 |
How do you know it was intentionally? |
Mr. Scully 28.01.2007 07:46 |
Well... he wanted us to write our names and nationalities on his paper - and there was NOBODY from Slovakia there at all. There's no way he could have made a mistake. And he interviewed another Czech guy so we think he didn't want to have two Czechs on the DVD. |
YourValentine 28.01.2007 12:35 |
For Rudi Dolezal there is probably not much of a difference between Czechs and Slovakians :) As to the videos: I think DoRo made some amazing videoclips and some of the worst documentaries, mainly the horrible Untold Story with all the cringeworthy "re-enactments". I agree they did some real good non-Queen work, so we have to take into account that they probably only did what Queen wanted them to do. |

PieterMC wrote: The way that they edit things together drives me nuts. The worst example is Rare Live.Funny you should mention Rare Live as I just watched it yesterday after a two-year hiatus. I like it - spanning Queen over the years, comparing how they played a song then and later, the changes in hairdos, in costumes, in stage lighting (oh, how I love that Queen stage lighting!), how Freddie's voice changed over the years, his stage movements. I could watch the Stone Cold Crazy clip a zillion times in a row and never tire of it. My Melancholy Blues - how beautiful is that?! Well, yes, the vhs is choppy. I was wishing someone would come out with a similar dvd zinging back and forth between the years, only hopefully with footage we haven't seen before. I know there was a clip on youtube with Freddie and all in Paris, and he was first speaking in French, and then went into this incredibly romantic song (I can't remember which one.) I think he was shirtless, shiny black pants, suspenders. Beautiful. I always thought Queen just did one song on Saturday Night Live - Crazy Little Thing Called Love; but I read they did Under Pressure, too. Oops, I better search youtube. Oh, I found Under Pressure. link |

carboengine wrote:Carboengine, when we say we don´t like the "Rare Live", it´s nothing against the different years. It´s when on one song you have about 3 or 4 different sources- like "Sheer Heart Attack"- this way the song doesn´t flow (even with the best edit in the world a project like this would fail). Not only that, they´ve changed the integrity to severall songs, cuting for example the piano solo from "My meloancholy Blues", or adding an extra chorus line on "SHA". They should keep each video unedited.PieterMC wrote: The way that they edit things together drives me nuts. Those songs you´ve mentioned were indeed the best and "Crazy little thing..." was too, becaused they were left alone (although My Melancholy Blues was edited). But i don´t blame them on this, because it passed the "Heavilly" Queen quallity control! (and remember, we´re talking about a band that doesn´t release the Earls Court 77 DVD because they don´t have the camera angle that allowed to see Freddíe´s hands while he played the piano). Take care |
Winter Land Man 28.01.2007 15:26 |
I think they do some great stuff. I remember reading Peter Freestone's book.. and he listed them and only one of their names appeared as I think as a friend and director and the other just as director. I think Rudi was the friend. |

Our main complaints are not about edits in Rare Live but about the 10 mistakes they did in dates of 20 songs. Unbelievable percentage. |

I really liked the Magic Years videos. they were invaluable to me at the time when I was just discovering the band. rare live, I can understand the criticisms, but at the time for me it was a great collection of previously unseen footage. Champions of the world, well, i think it was basically an edit of magic years with the post '86 stuff added wasn't it? so not much to comment on. |
Deacons 1st Choice 09.02.2007 22:07 |
Champions of the World was a total and utter rip-off....above statement reminded me! I rememeber how pumped people in the Queen Fan Community were when this was originally released....all this promise of "new rare footage" and the tempting Smile clips made just about every Queen fan rush out and buy it immediately after it was issued. Sadly once you watched it, you realized it was 90% of "Magic Years" and only 10% (if that..) of "new" stuff! Argh....COTW sucked!!!! :( |
Daniel Nester 10.02.2007 00:32 |
Magic Years was pretty much DoRo at their best. But the montage videos are just terrible -- little did I know that the montage of TYMD on Rare Live was only the beginning. But let's face it: These are the official documentarians for Queen. They're not going to do anything vaguely controversial or innovative. Their job is to produce vanilla product. The real beef I have with them is that they don't know when to stop putting out product, or at least say no to a job. The Lover of Life Singer of Songs DVD is pure exploitation. The videos with mimed singing is almost unwatchable. And has anyone seen the German game show with a hologram of Freddie with three people miming the instruments? Either Do or Ro--I can't remember which--watched from the audience, as if approving this vampyric exercise. I will say this: The Untold Story was really good. I just didn't need to see the bonus footage on the Lover of Life set; or, better put, I should have gotten then when I bought the Freddie Mercury Solo Collection boxed set that set me back 300 dollars. OK, off soapbox. |
