the town where i live was without power yesterday when a powerstation caught fire at about 3pm. it has been suggested that a power surge (in Headless Cross, redditch) 400 yds from where i live - caused the fire which left 25,000 homes and all the streets without electricity for between five and nine hrs.
even the heavy rain did little to put the fire out...as the strong winds helped the flames gather strength.
early reports indicate there were no injured
Yikes.
We lost power last night while I was almost done typing up my history study guide. I was pretty pissed. I had to stop and then study for my math midterm exams by a ton of candles. It was only out for about three hours. We thought it was from the freezing ice on the poles and lines which was bending trees in our backyard.
But in the hall at school today I overheard a girl talking because she lost power too (the whole city did). She said she looked out the window and saw blue, and then immediately heard fire sirens and ambulences. It turned out that a car crashed into a power generator.

Down in MASS you got Freezing Rain? Up here in NH we got a ton of sleet. It is all ice now though.
Yes. It was very wet stuff and loads of icing.
Two of my friends at school are in NH, one said that the power went out all night and was still gone this morning, and the other never showed up for school today. She missed her midterms, so it must've been pretty bad. I forgot how it happened though...I was in the middle of cram-studying during the break when she told me, lol.
No power outages near you?

No... most of the day it sleeted, so it didn't accumalte on any power lines or anything, but then it became freezing rain and accumalted lightly and made the ground icy, but it wasn't enough to cause any electrical problems, but I didn't talk to many people yesterday as I was actually plowing the sleet and sanding driveways.

AND how much refrigerators start smelling.
;_;
Gee thanks, Katrina! I think curbside refrigerators were the worst-smelling things I've ever smelled.
I remember the great power failure of August 2003, because I was working at an amusement park at the time and..... we weren't affected. But we could have been!
One of my coworkers had gone to Cedar Point out in Sandusky, Ohio, and was in a mammoth (5+ hour) line to ride Top Thrill Dragster, which had been installed for that summer. He said the utter chaos when all the power went out in the park was unbelievable, but he refused to leave the line.
Anyway, here in PA, we're not getting anything. It's just 24 degrees and that's about it. No chance of anything. *grumble*
It's been a while since there was a decent power failure in my town... But still, at the countryside, whenever it rains heavy, we have at least a candle-light night. Oh, and of course (in the same place), due to the big floos, the pilars (word choice?) were destroyed so and we couldn't get out either, and it was a few days without power. Indeed, it's a revelation to see how frail our life is. :-)
