Which album, in your opinion, is the better one? I mean, A Day At The Races came out after A Night At The Opera...and they both are VERY alike...But don't let your opinions depend on that fact that A Night At The Opera was released before and is one of the most "famous" of Queen's albums...because of Bo Rhap -_-'....I would actually say that A Day At The Races is better...But in my opinion of course... So...which would you prefer? |
brENsKi 29.12.2006 11:57 |
for style - Opera, for overall quality - Races Races was supposed to be the leftovers from the Opera sessions. Tell you what...there are some songs on Races that are MUCH betetr than anything on Opera. YTMBA and Millionaire are beautiful songs. STL has perhaps Freddie's finest bit of singing anywhere, and is probably the most perfect and complete song he ever wrote. Even John and Roger's "fillers" are very good songs. GOFL is fantastically extreme and TYMD is possibly Brian's finest out-and-out rocker |

I would rather spend a night at the opera. I mean... horses ? I don't even like horses. And if I was going to do some gambling, I think I could find a more exciting way to do it - rather than betting little pieces of paper (or electronic signals, or even bits of metal) on which sweaty four-legged beast will be in front of all the other sweaty four-legged beasts when going around an oval. For instance, I could say something about gambling and sex without a condom - but I think the political correctness value there would be incredibly low and probably somewhat in poor taste. And I do like opera, so there's really no contest. On a more serious note, I think the Queen albums (o, yes, those things) are different in "feeling". The one whose title infers watching sweaty four-legged beasts is very "romantic" and the song "You Take My Breath Away" is such a wonderful stalker song that I can't bear to listen to it. The one whose title implies a fat lady singing isn't so mushy-gushy over-all. I don't know. Depends on how I'm feeling. They're such nice companions, and get on well together. Except when someone falls in love with a motor-vehicle, then things just go bad - because mufflers cause unbearable chafing that no amount of lubricant can help prevent. |

A Night At The Opera 1. Death On Two Legs (Dedicated To...) - great 2. Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon - I like it 3. I'm In Love With My Car - great 4. You're My Best Friend - great 5. '39 - great 6. Sweet Lady - I'm not that fond of this one. 7. Seaside Rendezvous - I like it 8. The Prophet's Song - I have to be in the mood for this one. I would like this song better in an edited format (remove the vocal canon, which, IMO, bogs the song down). 9. Love Of My Life - great 10. Good Company - good 11. Bohemian Rhapsody - great 12. God Save The Queen - great A Day At The Races 1. Tie Your Mother Down - great 2. You Take My Breath Away - great; It would be better in an edited format (again, remove the vocal canon, which bogs the song down). 3. Long Away - great 4. The Millionaire Waltz - I don't like this track at all with the exception of that very short heavy section. 5. You And I - good 6. Somebody To Love - great 7. White Man - I have to be in the mood for this one, too. It's not one of my favorites. 8. Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy - great 9. Drowse - Boring track (definitely filler) 10. Teo Torriatte (Let Us Cling Together) - good song With that said, I like "A Night At The Opera" more than "A Day At The Races". |

My vote...Races wins by a nose... Drowse is anything but a filler, in my view. Listen to the lyrics of the bridge...I think it's great!! If anything the album should be sold as a pair with A Night at the Opera - as I see the two albums as related....kind of a continuation of the 'White/Black' theme... ...for what it's worth. |

I have to say I greatly enjoyed my first listen of ANATO, much more that I enjoyed my first listen of ADATR. At first I found the 'You Take My Breath Away' dull. Now, regarding YTMBA, yes it's beautiful. For the most part wonderfully simple, just piano and vocals and the harmonies, spot on as ever. I really enjoy the way that some of the songs on the two albums sit next to each other, like twins of each other. For example Tie Your Mother Down and Sweet Lady Rockers by Brian May which I both enjoy very much. But TYMD is better. A much better-quality rock-song. 'Love of My Life' and 'You Take My Breath Away' very close together. I have to be in the right mood for them both otherwise I find them dull but they are top-notch songs and very close in quality. I prefer LOML, I prefer the sound of Fred's voice and Bri's guitar on that record. 'The Prophet's Song' and 'White Man' go together. They have the same vaguely spooky feel to them (I'm not musical so excuse me for my vocabulary) But PS is the better song. A bit long but WM sounds like a tired version of PS. YMBF and YAI. Can't remember what You and I sounds like. Quite nice I think. But YMBF is excellent. Excellent vocals, lyrics to bring a smile to anyone's face (or vomit to the throat, whichever kinda person you are)and it 'goes' very well with the overblown pieces of magic on ANATO. No doubt about it, IILWMC is a MUCH better song than 'Drowse', which sounds like Roger's line of thought was 'Damn, I put my best song on the LAST album. What do I do? I REALLY want a song on this album *scribbles frantically*' TMW, STL=standout songs on ADATR. Bo Rhap, DOTL=a couple of standouts on ANATO. I personally prefer ANATO. ADATR however, is severely underrated. I prefer ANATO because I prefer Queen with their harmonies and overblown rock gems. ADATR had fewer songs heavy with vocal harmonies but it is a lovely album. A selection of absolute classics. It isn't merely ANATO 2, in general it's softer, with TYMD and White Man as the exceptions and it's a good 'love album'. It's a moody album, not as fancy and frilly as its predecessor. A hint more feeling, and a hint of comfort too as Queen had hit the big-time, ADATR says to me 'OK we know what we're doing now' |
ITSM 29.12.2006 15:20 |
A Day at the Races. I think all the songs on A day at the races are just great, all except 1 and 7, they are just good. It's a really relaxed and romantic album, but these two songs are a little bit too hard and the lyrics arent's the best. And about Drowse.. it took me about 10 years to like it, but now I think it's one of the best, at least the best song ever written by Roger Taylor. The last verse ("Never wanted to be the boy nest door....") is one of my favourite verses. There are a lot of piano played by F. Mercury, and with J. Deacon's bass-guitar, it's really fantastic! A day at the races and Queen II are the best Queen-albums, I think... And it would be great if they made an 30 years annoversoary of it too! |

With only 2 days to go until the end of the year, it is slightly unlikely that an anniversary package will be released. Queen 2 was originally released in 1974...making the 30th anniversary...2004. Still, roll on 2012 for the Hot Space 30th anniversary package. |

These are both great albums, classics in the realm of classic rock, no doubt. But when comparing the two, A Night At The Opera is easily the better of the two, and all you have to do is compare the similar songs. In my mind, A Day at The races is just a toned down Opera. A lot of the same kind of material, but Queen were playing it a little safer with Races, and I really don't think they had to. The Intro : both albums have great intros. With Opera, you got the piano intro to DOTL, in Races, the "neverending staircase" as Brian put it. I like both, but Opera's is cooler. Opera: 1 Races: 0 The Brian May rocker: Sweet Lady v. Tie Your Mother Down I like both, but no doubt TYMD is the better song. It's a bonefide Queen classic and just gets you pumped up for the album better. Sweet Lady is good, but a little messy. Opera: 1 Races: 1 The Mercury love song: Love Of My Life v. You Take My Breath Away This is really no contest. These two are so similar but LOML is just that much better. Opera: 2 Races: 1 Brian sung song: '39 v. Long Away Same as the pervious argument. Similar but '39 is just so much more interesting and easily one of Queen's best songs, compared to the more average Long Away. Opera: 3 Races: 1 Mercury epic: Bohemian Rhapsody v. The Millionaire Waltz Don't get me wrong, I love TMW. It's great. Great hard rock bit, great slower parts, and a terrific finale. But is it the greatest piece of music ever written? No, that honor would go to Bohemian Rhapsody. Opera: 4 Races: 1 Deacy's feel good pop: You're My Best Friend v. You And I I like You And I a lot, but it's not the classic YMBF is. Opera: 5 Races: 1 Emotionally charged Freddie piece: Death On Two Legs vs. Somebody To Love Yes, this comparision is a bit of a stretch, but they are similar in the way they were written about something, rather than the meaningless Tolken-esque lyrics of other early Mercury songs. Oh yea, Somebdoy To Love is much, much better. Opera: 5 Races: 2 Brian prog epic: The Prophet's Song v. White Man God, they even have the same riff! Whatever, this isn't even close. Prophet by a mile. Opera: 6 Races: 2 Freddie's vaudeville: Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon/Seaside Rendezvous v. Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy Wow, we get a double dose of it on Opera, but GOFLB is barely the best song here (I have a thing for LOASA). Opera: 6 Races: 3 Roger's song: I'm In Love With My Car v. Drowse Drowse is certainly better than some of the other stuff Roger's come up with over the years, but it just doesn't rock like IILWMC. Opera: 7 Races: 3 Misc. Brain competition: Good Company v. Teo Torriate No, these are as about as different as two Queen songs can be, but nor are the similar to anything else Brain wrote. Teo Torriate is easily the better piece tho. Opera: 7 Races: 4 And there you have it, and I feel it's pretty decisive. If you want a song by song ranking.... A NIGHT AT THE OPERA Death On Two Legs - 10 Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon - 10 I'm In Love With My Car - 9 You're My Best Friend - 10 '39 - 10 Sweet Lady - 9 Seaside Rendezvous - 9 The Prophet's Song - 10 Love Of My Life - 10 Good Company - 8 Bohemian Rhapsody - 10 105/110 - 96% I don't rank GSTQ - it's just an outro A DAY AT THE RACES Tie Your Mother Down - 10 You Take My Breath Away - 8 Long Away - 8 The Millionaire Waltz - 10 You And I - 8 Somebody To Love - 10 White Man - 8 Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy - 10 Drowse - 8 Teo Torriate - 10 90/100 - 90% |

Seems like the perfect topic to remind that Brian wanted the songs in both albuns to be featured in only one, a double album (One of Brian's best ideas ever. And sadly wasted). The record company and the other 3 members however, did not fancy the idea. I am sure that it would certainly gain a forever podium in any best-album-poll. Any. |

Sebastian 30.12.2006 15:49 |
I think the four of them were better instrumentalists in Races. Production was better with Mike Stone being their super-engineer, and now they could use 32-track instead of just 24. Their experience was enough for them to try out even more eccentric projects than before: now Brian didn't use a mini-banjo, but a plastic piano! Now the skiffle-esque tune wasn't with double-bass and tambourine, but with full rocking electric bass and Roger's powerful drumming. They didn't have to bounce so much so they could do more overdubs (vocal + instruments) with better quality, and Freddie's experience as producer for Eddie Howell had given him more knowledge in that field. Moreover, Roger's kit in Hyde Park was the biggest ever, and a 1975 Freddie probably wouldn't have been able of recording the piano parts in 'Millionaire Waltz' with such quality. 'You And I' is lyrically, harmonically, melodically and production-wise better than 'Best Friend', although sadly the lads didn't promote it as they should have: no single, no video, no live performances. All of that means that ... 'Races' is the one album that COULD/SHOULD have outdone 'Opera', but DIDN'T. The reasons: they tried too hard (IMO). Brian's 'Waltz' orchestra is astonishing, but it fails to have that playful cheerful quality of the jazz band in 'Good Company'. 'Drowse' is far more complicated (harmonically) than 'Car', and is definitely an oeuvre that requires a deeper musical knowledge, not to mention that lyrics are much more mature; yet it fails to roll as readily as 'Car' does. Brian's vocal work in 'Long Away' is, by technique and strength, better than the ones in '39 and 'Good Company', yet he failed to deliver the lyrics as smoothly as he'd done with the earlier numbers. The band as a whole did have some extraordinary ensemble when it came to backing vocals: the harmonies in 'Tie Your Mother Down' are better sung, better arranged and better mixed than those in 'Two Legs', and something similar happens even with 'Breath' against 'Love Of My Life', or 'Teo' versus '39. So the band got too obsessed about trying too hard, and they forgot some key elements: they lost the outrageousness of forming a woodwind/brass vocal orchestra, and epics were lost: 'White Man' is largely inferior to 'Prophet's Song' and both 'Somebody' and 'Waltz' are far less complex than 'Bo Rhap'. 'Races' didn't have stupid lyrics such as "some kind of cheese" ('Sweet Lady'), but they neither had anything as heartfelt and poetic as '39 (only 'Teo' comes close to some extent) or 'Love Of My Life'. That's my opinion anyway. |
deleted user 30.12.2006 19:25 |
Although I think they're both incredible, ANATO is the better one in my opinion. Because although ADATR has songs I absolutely love like Long Away, You and I, Good Old-Fashioned Lover Boy, and Teo Torriatte, i was brought up listening to Bo Rhap, and i never really can get enough of other songs like '39, Good Company, and Seaside Rendezvous (although Sweet Lady does somewhat spoil the album). But, like I said before, it is very close. |
Marcos Napier 30.12.2006 21:43 |
To quote someone else's reply ... ADATR wins by a nose... a pelican's nose. Although DOTL and Prophet are masterpieces and LOML studio is a trillion times better than these campy live versions, Races is much better. Technically speaking maybe not that much (not as in "playing skills"), as the things achieved with ANATO with the equipment of that time were really unusual and unique (and some were "fine tuned" a bit in Races, with better results, in better songs). The experimentations of ANATO gave birth to much other good results, like for example the "drums" of WWRY, and that probably was the best thing of ANATO, it gave them the courage to just try new stuff, not caring much if it would work or not - but it did work. Then a few years later Roy Thomas Baker stole the same operatic vocals and used it with The Cars... |
mike hunt 31.12.2006 04:56 |
A day at the races is one of those rare albums that gets better with age, but the problem is your comparing this great album with a true classic. It's hard to beat songs like death on two legs and 39, Prophet song, LOML and BO Rhap. good company and seaside R. are also brilliant. My ordor is Queen2, Anato, ADATR/sheer heart attack are tied and then Queen 1. |

i think also that people who "found queen" later on have an advantage over us older ones who were there at the time. generally speaking those that are either late teens now or adults since Freddie died have a greater degree of objectivity and are more able to get away from "classic" tags. those of us about at the time, tend to attach songs/albums to events in our lives...we are the generation who looks fondly on programmes like the BBC's "rock years" and remembers what we were doing and when. songs/albums like bo rhap/opera/bat out of hell/ smoke on the water / rumours / led zep 4 / etc etc don't just bear memories for us. they are time/date stamped with the all the important events in our lives. so for that reason - and many others - we are unable to get passed certain song...once you love a certain album it WILL ALWAYS be your favourite. so for me Queen II will always beat Opera. and Races will too.....sorry for going on. |

Now that I think of it, Races may be an overall better album in terms of performance, production, sound quality and mixing. But Opera's got better songs. 'Sheer Heart Attack' has got IMO some of the best songs they all wrote, but the quality of their playing, singing, mixing, producing and particularly their backing tracks, is far inferior to that in 'Opera', 'Races' or 'Innuendo'. Amongst other things, that proves 'SHA' is in some ways even more complicated than 'II'. |

GOFL is fantastically extreme and TYMD is possibly Brian's finest out-and-out rockerWHAT DOES STL MEAN AND GOFL? |

Danny1 wrote: Because (BoRhap) and (LOML) might very well be the two greatest songs of all time, i have to vote for (ANATO).Agreed, I think BoRhap, love of my life and the prophet song are among the best queen songs ever. That's the main reason some people don't hear the genious of "good company" it's between three of the greatest Queen songs. |

oh crap this would be like picking my favorite child. well considering my cd for day at the races is scratched nad i cant listen to it, i listen to a night at the opera more, but doing that too much can ruin the beauty of it. BUT prophets song is on night at the opera....which i love. speaking of a night at the opera, for new years i watched that marx brothers film :-D .....just thought i should mention that. so the verdict is ill have to flip a coin. even if i do tho, i wouldnt be happy with the answer so i love both my children ;-) |

Both albums are surely 2 of Queen's best records. To me it's like comparing apples to oranges. That said I feel ADATR is oh so very slighly stronger. Why? Somebody To Love is the greatest recording in pop history. Period. |

I always wanted to check out ANATO and ADATR from the marx brothers, but still never saw them. They have the boxset of all their movies. |

I think I'd have to say A Day At The Races. It has my absolute fav. songs! Long Away - I think it's my overall fav.! You And I - Second or third. Some Day One Day is another fav.! You Take My Breath Away The Millionaire Waltz But ANATO has some GREAT ones too! '39 Good Company I'm In Love With My Car Death On Two Legs Boh. Rhap. The Prophet's Song Lazing On A Sunday Afternoon Oh, why not just mention them all! But I still think ADATR is the better one... At least at the moment. |

i think a night at the opera is waaaay better. death on two legs is one of my favorite songs ever, its a perfect opener. starts the album out with strength and anger, then goes into the lighthearted lazing on a sunday afternoon. every song just completely contrasts the last song, and yet it still all flows together, each song complimenting the one before it and the one after it. it just fits so perfectly together. plus it has the prophet's song, which is the coolest queen song. and also it has bohemian rhapsody, and be it overrated or not, it is an frickin awesome song |
