Dear Queenzoners, I always knew, yet for some reason never took interest, in the fact that Queen had some semi and sometimes very religious songs throughout their early career (1973-1975). Their debut album "Queen" is the perfect example. For example: "Now listen all you people Put out the good and keep the bad Don't believe all you read in the Bible You sinners get in line Saints you leave far behind Very soon you're gonna be his disciple Don't listen to what mama says Not a word not a word mama says Or else you'll find yourself being the rival The great Lord before He died Knelt sinners by his side And said you're gonna realise tomorrow" -Great King Rat (Freddie Mercury) Another good example would be the song Liar. Right when Freddie comes in to sing he says: "I have sinned dear Father, Father I have sinned Try and help me Father Won't you let me in? Liar" ETC Obviously, another good example would be Freddie's song Jesus. I don't think I need to explain that one, and if I do, you better start reading the Bible! lol I could go on and on about the influences of religion I found on Queen's debut album and other songs. As I said, you'll mainly find this throughout their early career (whether or not the band took their lyrics seriously). One thing you should take note of is that most the songs I've found using religious themes were written by Freddie. The song Liar was basically about someone asking for forgiveness because he had sinned. In the opening lines Freddie is confessing to God that he has sinned. To me this reflects the fact that Freddie was accepting the fact that he was a homosexual and was asking for forgiveness. Anyway, I just thought this was interesting and was wondering what all of you think. Thanks for taking notice and take care. Steve |

Didn't read most of yer post because I'm in hurry, but : Yeah, I think they understood the value of religion as mere storytelling as opposed to a way of life. You can tell some very interesting tales when you put a God-bent on it. |

so the book is not about queen..it is about religion isn't it? |
Serry... 18.11.2006 06:00 |
It's about Freddie - how 'gay mafia' killed him (it's not a joke!), how religious he was, how many religious anthems he wrote, Saint Frederick Bulsara etc. |
icefire 18.11.2006 06:06 |
she must be a very wise woman with a good imagination i think. did she write how exactly gay mafia killed him? |
Serry... 18.11.2006 06:09 |
Yes, he's dead NOT BECAUSE of AIDS, because Freddie never was gay nor bisexual (gay mafia labeled him as gay)! And then gay mafia (Peter Freestone and Jim Hutton + Gordon Atkinson as fans of the book told me) killed Freddie, it was virus infection, cancer, but not AIDS. And everything what Freddie sung, done, wore was full of hidden religious signs... |

how i hate all those freddie's friends!! |

AIDS didn't kill Freddie Mercury. Chuck Norris accidentally thought 'kill Freddie Mercury' and it just happened. |

That book about how the gay mafia killed Freddie is twisted. What was she (the author) smoking? Anyway, very interesting and I shall take notice of the book. What is the books title? P.S. Serry, you met Peter Freestone and Jim Hutton + Gordon Atkinson? |

"Serry, you met Peter Freestone and Jim Hutton + Gordon Atkinson?" No "Really? I regularly visited (when the book just was availible on the site) queen.peoples.ru and I remember that the bigger part of people was very suspicious of Ahundovas book. Has it changed since then?" Yes. Book was released in Russia and since there are not many books about Freddie on Russian language, it became very popular. Book's title is "History of Freddie Mercury", over 450 pages. |

The religious songs came from Freddie. He probably had the most religious upbringing. I know Roger hates religion with a passion and thinks it 'fucks people up' meh, he has a point. |

Its me again...and I have a question. I had heard at one time that The Prophet's Song contained lyrics that came directly from the Bible or something. Is this true? I'd look it up in the Bible, but I'm too lazy...thanks in advance. Steve |

Yes. Be very afraid of the gay mafia. They'll send 5 of their thugs to your house; they'll redecorate your bedroom, groom you, tell you how to cook romantic meals, take you shopping for trendy clothes, and then they'll make you throw a party to test all that you have learned. |

And they've succeeded! Just look at me, I'm living proof of that! lol |

I THINK "The Prophet's Song" is about Noah's Arc. The lyrics has a lot of simmularities. Noah tried to tell the people of the city he lived in that God was mad at them. And that God would make a lot of water come and destroy all life on earth, at least on the dry land. But the people didn't listen to him and called him a madman, because of what he told them and because he built a boat/arc (a big boat) so far from the sea. God gave Noah some time to collect 2 of every kind of animals, one male and one female to have on his arc. "and two by two my human zoo, They'll be running for to come, running for to come out of the rain". After many days, I think it was about 3 years Noah sendt a bird out, and Noah thought that if it didn't came back it would have found dry land, and if it came back that it was still just water everywhere.. But the dove came back with a green leaf. "Fly and find the new green bough, Return like the white dove". I DON'T REMEMBER IT CORRECTLY, SO I'M SORRY IF IT'S NOT 100% CORRECT, BUT IT'S SOMETHING LIKE THAT, THE STORY OF NOAH'S ARC... ...Sorry if everybody knew this already...??!!!! and sorry about my poor English. Anyway, I find it strange that Brian May wrote a song like this, now that he is out with his "Bang!" book and everything... |

According to what Brian says about the Prophet's Song in the Documentary on the Making of ANATO; the lyric came to him in a dream. So he took it and turned it into a song. On the topic of Queen's religious standpoint; Roger has his clear opinions about it, I don't believe John ever wrote about it either. Brian and Freddie wrote all of the material that would have any religious standpoint at all. I think Freddie's lyrics show confusion, wheras Brian's are warnings and/or cries for help. |
