I have a visitor in my backyard. She's been there for a few weeks now. Here she is... link She is a Yellow and Black Argiope. She was HUGE but she's slimmed down now. Here's why.... link That is her egg sac. Next spring I'll have 100s of her in my yard eating all my nasty grasshoppers that ruin my grass. Ain't she perrrtty? I just wish the pics were clearer. I do not have a steady hand. ;) |

!! "Yellow and Black Argiope" ! THAT'S what was living on my dad's window. We couldn't figure out what it was. Thanks ! I don't mind that as much as I do the little furry spiders... those are scary. This one was pretty docile and just sat there. |

I am completely fine with spiders as long as they don't come inside my house. This gal is outside so I am ok to let her stay. I also like that she has all but gotten rid of my grasshopper problem. I live in a house that is only a year old so the ground has just been turned over and the bugs in the yard are all over...well they used to be until my little friend came to my yard!! My grass looks ten times better now that she is here. |
mayniac316 25.09.2006 23:21 |
We used to have TONS of those in the backyard at my old house... My stepmom is terrified of spiders, so my brother and I would gently remove them from their webs and let them crawl all over our arms and show her. It was so funny to see how she'd freak, lol. |
Saint Jiub 25.09.2006 23:23 |
Our family lost our beloved spider, probably from a rain deluge last week. During the day she lived under our outdoor garage light between the light frame and the house siding. But at night we would leave the light on for her to attract the bugs. She was so cute scurrying over to pounce on poor defenceless blood-sucking, West Nile virus infested misquitoes. If only Charlotte were a little bigger she could have helped with our neighborhood's Canadian "rats with wings" geese infestation. I am entirely unsure of what species of spider she was, but she was big and brown with 1/2" body and 1" diameter including the legs. I hope she is still eating misquitoes, but, if not, may she rest in peace. Shiff, sniff - pass the Kleenex please. |

I've shown the kids the spider and they know to look and not touch. We watch her and learn from her. They know what good she does for us by keeping pests away. Every night this particular spider eats her web and rebuilds it every morning. So we watched her spin some of her web today. Very cool. I was always terrified of spiders as well and infact I still am but I decided to learn more about them so I wouldn't be so fearful. I don't have a problem with spider pictures, or sleeping spiders, or spiders lying in wait... but once they move, once those furry little legs scurry - oh, God, the very word 'scurry' raises the hair on the back of my neck - I'm gone. Pathetic me. They move? I move. And fast. Enjoy her, Lisser. Here's the one in my yard - if you look closely at the second picture, the underside of her body looks like a creepy head with glowing eyes. <shudder> link link |

Sherwood Forest wrote: its a nice spider quite beautiful colors but id get that egg sack away from your house unless u want it infestedMy house will not be infested. This is why I do a little research on things I don't have a knowledge base on before I make unreasonable assumptions. This spider would much rather be outside than inside my house. She knows that her food source is outside. Most of the spiderlings that will come out of the egg sac in the Spring will not survive due to natural predators or just nature itself. Hardly enough to call an infestation at the least anyway. I also know from doing a little research that this spider is harmless to humans. If I see that some of the spiderlings gets in my house I will make sure it finds its way back out. Also, this spider will nine times out of ten attach its egg sac to a hard, permanent surface like a house, patio support, tree, large shrub, etc. so it is in a very natural place and that is where it will stay. This spider has literally saved my whole backyard. I was infested with grasshoppers until she came along. My grass was chewed to bits. |

You're calling my spider, 'common'??? :) You know what's interesting is we (the whole family) watched her spin this web. She was all about detail, but fast! She left a hole in the center and when the web was complete, she popped over to the other side (which is how I got the picture of her belly), closed up the hole and just sat there, waiting. The article you found describes her web as about 3 feet wide and 3 feet high. That's exactly right. We were shocked by the size and thickness of it. We had barbecued chicken and hot dogs that night. I wonder what she had. :/ |
