To start something fresh between the huge amount of threads about Greg Brooks: What's your opinion on the song Sweet Lady? Do you think it's underrated or is it indeed one of Queen's weaker songs as I think many people would say. I agree that it's absolutely no match for songs like The Prophet's Song or Bohemian Rhpasody on the A Night At The Opera album but I don't think it's the weakest song in their entire catalogue. It doesn't have that much depth, on the other hand it did pretty well when played live I must say. Any thoughts? |

Great question, Jay. To tell you the truth, I hated it at first; it sounded like they'd just written any old rocker to keep the album in the heavy category- perhaps to please the metal fans because of all the music hall jazz that was on ANATO. Now, I rather like it- it's quite ascerbic and the riff, though basic is very catchy- it improves as it goes along with a great fast rock ending. yes, it's a good, solid hard rocker which improved as a live piece and would have been geat at Wembley. |

See, I have recently changed my attitude about this track. It used to be a bit boring, but I started to really like it. Not like it was a crap song before, but I just never connected to it. But now, well, I think it's a cool one. Peace, Adam. |

Nice work by Rog, poor lyrics, but unusual track a little bit... |

It's a good rocker, with okay lyrics and absolutely brilliant harmony guitars. I listened to it in 5.1 and it smokes. The line for the record is "you call me sweet like I'm some kind of cheese", and it is the most misunderstood lyric in the Queen catalogue. The song is a converstion, with "the woman" answering "the man", and saying he treats her like a product to be put on a shelf when finished. Cheese can be sweet BTW, but it's whooly tongue in cheek and not meant to be taken literally like cheese is sweet like a lollipop or cotton candy. |

Great track. Especially the bridge is awesome. The one thing that spoils it a bit for me is the poor chorus. |
Jay Mantis 19.07.2006 09:03 |
I agree that the riff is pretty cool. Still I think they should have added some more harmonic vocals to the whole thing. |

"you make me feel like some kind of a cheese" I mean come on now...That lyric is as... cheesy... as they get! :) Anyway, since when is cheese sweet? A dire song. I wouldn't give it a second listen if it wasn't on ANATO. V. |

Sweet Lady is filler. It's the weak link of a classic album. If only Tie Your Mother Down could have replaced it. |

I always liked the song, but it always struck me that the song was a bit of a rush job. Parts of it are great (the main riff in particular), but the transition parts of the song just don't sound right to me (main part to bridge to chorus and back etc.). I do really like the "though it seems like we wait forever..." vocal, a real nice job by Freddie. |

I think that the last part of Sweet Lady is one of the best collaborations, musical wise, by John, Brian and Roger on a record. It's simply stunning. It has everything. It really shows how much talent they had as a band. I only hate the way Freddie sings the words "Sweet Lady". |

As a song.. IT SUCKS BIG TIME! Bad lyrics, boring, filler, almost sounds unfinished... Makes you wonder, if Sweet Lady was on ANATO, how bad were some of the discarded songs? :) Live, however, had few very good rock moments between roger, john and brian. I remind you Brian's original's idea to make ANATO a double-album with its material plus the songs for ADATR. I'm quite sure that, even the critics would place it as the best rock album ever... |
drwinston 19.07.2006 12:23 |
I hate it - always have, and probably always will. That said, there is an incomplete live version on the first DVD-A (I believe) where the boys are really tearing it up during the solo. I wish I knew where that version came from. |

Interesting question, seeing as this song is often mentioned.. I used to hate it, and skip it everytime. I'm alright with it now, and I've learnt to love the vocals. Although the lyrics aren't the best around. :P |

I see that many people dont really like this song. But i like it alot. Its not in the LOVE catergory for me as far as QUEEN goes. But i still enjoy the track very much. I really like the tounge-in-cheekness of the lyrics about a relationship, which is clearly not a smooth one. I enjoy the riff very much, Roger's drumming is superb on it as well as John's base work... I like Freddie's little ad-libs like "Oh, I Like It"... All in all for me its a fun track. |

Love the track. And, Niek, the bridge IS pretty bitchin'. |
tenchijin2 20.07.2006 01:46 |
The lyrics are *clever*. The song is a great display of the frustration of male/female relationships. The first verse is him complaining about how she treats him, the second is her complaining about how he treats her! It's classic! Can't you just hear some fed up wife or girlfriend saying in an exhasperated voice "you call me 'sweet'! What am I, some sort of cheese or something? You're such a jerk!" For the life of me, I can't understand why that lyric miffs so many people. It's supposed to be sort of funny, or one off. And for the record, some cheese can DEFINITELY be called 'sweet'. And I love the recording. You can hear the room the band is in, and the instruments glued together as they play the bed tracks. You can hear the compressors pumping when the the heavy guitars come back after the bridge. The power is impressive. The song drives with this frustrated rock power. The 3/4 signature makes it feel like it just doesn't relax, which the lyrics match wonderfully. It sounds frustrated, angry. Is it brilliant? Well, maybe not. Is it clever, and catchy? I think so. Is is powerful and unusual? Absolutely, which is why it is Queen! |

sweet lady is a decent song. The music and vocals are good, but the lyrics are weak. It's probably my least fav on ANATO along with i'm in love with my car, but both are still good. |

Anyway, I've always liked 'Sweet Lady', though I agree about the "you call me sweet like I'm some kind of cheese" - it just doesn't sit right, no matter how clever it may be. But I think the song cooks, especially toward the end, and - maybe it's just me - I would've liked to've seen QPR do this song on the recent tour. |

It's not a bad song. There many others I would put way a head of that one as far worst, but a lot of thier weaker material it tends to be a better song preformed live. |

SweetLady is kinda strange one, seems it's in a way similar to BodyLanguage: you can just love it or hate it ;) Personally i do not like it too much. I don't skip it, but i don't listen that closely either. If i remember right, it was featured at least on some Bulgarian version of GreatestHits, and even released as a single in Turkiye. But if you put it against some other ANATO songs like BohemianRhapsody or TheProphetsSong of course it looks quite weak. It's not that epic, but i guess it wasn't even supposed to be ;) |

Also it was much better when played live! |

I've always liked this song. I think its sounds very cool. I like the cheese lyric because the way Freddie sings it is so funny. I don't understand why people don't like it too much. |

Freddie's tongue is planted firmly in cheek while delivering that line, sometimes I think a lot of people, even Queen fans, miss the humour and subtlety of their lyrics. |

an average song. I like it, and I can't imagine the album without it. Maybe i'm just used to the running order, but I can't see the album with out it. and, if for nothing else, it will be remembered for inspiring one of the more obscure threads on this forum, where someone did an experiment to see if cheese left on a shelf would turn sweet. Can't find the link, but someone might find it - it was really strange!!! |

I do like it quite a lot. It's very rocking. But when the chorus comes on, i do admit, it's a bit confusing....Sweet lady, sweet lady, sweet lady. But other then that, I love it. |
