Finally. Germany is in the grip of football. There is no shop window not decorated with footballs and no TV commercial that does not refer to the world cup. The country is property of MacDonalds, Hyunday and Budweiser, the main sponsors. No German beer is allowed near the stadiums and German buses must be re-labelled to Hyunday. Luckily, the FIFA lost a court case trying to forbid Germans to use the word "Weltmeisterschaft" (world championship). But 4 hours from now, when the the opening match starts, all irritations will be forgotten: the renaming of our stadiums, the ticketing (MacDonald still holds tens of thousands of tickets while fans have no chance to get one), the quarrels in the German football association and national team. Michael Ballack's injury is top news on all TV channels and the temperatures rose in two days to normal summer values, so that teams from more southern parts of the world won't be at disadvantage. 4 hours from now hell will break lose. I hope everybody enjoys it. |

Oh crap, now I have to find something to do for the next month that avoids football. I hate the world cup, so off to listen to some long forgotten albums! |
Fenderek 09.06.2006 08:59 |
Without Ballack it might be tricky for Germany to go further than quarter finals... He IS the only hope, really IMO... Podolsky (in which team should he really play, heh ;) )had a pretty bad season, Klose (another Pole, bloody hell ;) ) had a good one but he needs some support from midfield... And without Ballack... I really like the winger, what's his face... Schweinsteiger or something like taht. He's still young, he's got some nice technique and he's very quick... He is a dangerous player... I am waiting for today's Poland game- very important, we HAVE TO win that one. Next- and hopefully it won't rain this time ;) - we paly the hosts and than probably the ione that will decide whether we go furthjer or not- a game with Costa Rica... For one- the goalkeeper that conceded a goal from another goalkeeper won't be playing, so that's cool :) Zurawski, man from celtic is in pretty good shape, Smolarek is getting better and he showed in Dortmund what a good player he is... Krzynowek had a miserable season in Leverkusen, but if he wants to go somewhere else- what a better place to advertise himself is there? And than there is Szymek from Trabzonsport (Turkey) who had an excellent season and is probably Poland's most influential player... I really think we should go to the second round, probably as second (I really don't think we'll win against hosts, although I'd be delighted if that happened) and than PROBABLY we'll meet England in the second round and... have the revange!!! There will be no more stupid dancing, Mister Crouch ;) I honestly can't wait. I am going to watch ALL the games- I quit my job and decided to look for one after it's all over (and no- that's not the reason why I quit it ;) ) |

Schweinsteiger is really cool, I love him ;) he's always so agressive... |

My money's on England v Sweden for most boring game. |
Mr.Jingles 09.06.2006 10:24 |
I expect any of the African teams to give a great performance as they always come as underdogs, but surprise with their skills. Sadly they haven't been lucky enough to make it past quarter finals. I'll be supporting Ghana. Of course, Brasil is the huge favorite and all eyes are on Ronaldinho. Ronaldo on the other hand has not been as good as he once was, and I have the feeling he will be a dissapointment, and that might hurt his team. Nevertheless, if Brasil allows all this overhype to get to their heads they might even end up being eliminated on the first round. Consider that the same thing happened to Argetina and France in 2002. |

No revenge, Fenderek! Just another defeat. Roll on an hour, leaving work in 25 mins to get to the pub. Tomorrow is of course more important for me! |

Some idiot who lives near me said, "Oh well I won't be watching the World Cup this summer, it's nothing without the boys in green." What a plonker! Sure I felt frustrated when we didn't qualify, but I'm still watching it because it's the biggest football competition ever and it's exciting. I'm rooting for England this year, I've really grown fond of that country! Although I will get some slagging for that. |
Mr.Jingles 09.06.2006 17:14 |
I'm Colombian and I'm dissapointed this will be our second World Cup in a row where we fail to qualify. I wish the best of luck to all the teams, including those that eliminated us. |
deleted user 09.06.2006 17:25 |
I just hope we qualify next time round. It's times like these when I wish Roy Keane was still with us. As a matter of fact I hope we win the bloody thing next time! But we haven't got a strong enough side so that's wishful thinking. |

Barb- I said I hope it's not going to rain. I was wrong. WE need that bloody rain...! Otherwise- no chance...! Poland was AWFUL- the best player played only last 20 minutes (Jelen), defensive midfielder was playing as right winger- Janas (Polish coach) is mad... I liked Holland and especially Robben. ASrgentina had a pretty good game although Ivory Coast wasn't bad either. England didn't show anything, but they got three points- I was happy for small Trinidad to hold Sweden :) Germany scored two beautiful goals but were awful in defence- but in this group it doesn't matter it seems... From group A still anybody can go further- neither team really impressed although if Costa Rica wins agains Ecuador it may get REALLY interesting... |
YourValentine 12.06.2006 09:22 |
Actually, the Germans were pretty shocked about Poland losing to Ecuador. Everybody thought it's just Germany and Poland and Ecuador and Costa Ricca can be forgotten - a big mistake considering that Ecuador did win against Argentina and Brazil last year. Now we will have a tough match on Wednesday. |

Now we will have a tough match on Wednesday. It should be a good game, I agree. Poland has NOTHING to lose and this time they have to attack! Quite frankly I have no idea what they were playing against Ecuador, they only once in friendly used 1-4-5-1, Zurawski was never a type of 'lone striker, Smolarek had a good game but... no support whatsoever... And if we attack really hard- and German defence will be as bad as against Costa Rica- there is a chance for a good game... Because German counter attacks may be deadly0 Ballack is fine now, isn't he? Anyway- I support Czechs right now :) And Holland |
Mr.Jingles 12.06.2006 13:18 |
Poland is in big trouble now, as Germany will be looking forward to secure their pass to the next round on the next game. Ecuador has it easier, as they will face a Costa Rica with a weak defense, and then play Germany for the last game. |
Mr. Scully 12.06.2006 14:14 |
OK, America had no chance against us - not a surprise (3:0). But we lost Koller, our best shooter (~45 goals in 60 matches!). That's really bad for us :-((( |

C'mon POLAND! Nah- even I don't believe in it anymore... I tell ya, Chechs will go all the way, even without Koller. One condition- Baros will be fit. Rosicky so far the player of the tournament IMO. I know it's early and Brazil haven't played yet, but... they looked incredibly comfortable and confident... Very classy performance... |
