Pretty much every musical composition to date is recorded with the vocals seperate from the instruments. The lead guitar has its own track, the drums have their own track, and of course, the lead and backing vocals have their own as well. When they are layered together, or played through the same channels, you get the complete song, with all instruments and vocaled played seamlessly in unison. I have several of the tracks in question, including songs from The eYe. They are backing tracks, with no lead vocal from Freddie (except on a couple of tracks in which extra vocals from Freddie were used on the original tracks) |

They are backing tracks, with no lead vocal from Freddie (except on a couple of tracks in which extra vocals from Freddie were used on the original tracks) Thanks for your explanation on the track thing, the different instruments being recorded on seperate tracks. If you take a look on link you'll see the website of my company, wich is : a professional multitrack recording studio. In other words : DOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (PS: Sorry about the english section still being under construction, we're working on that onë) In other words : I'm pretty well aware of the fact that songs are recorded on seperate tracks. The question I have, is who the f*ck went into the studio GOT ACCESS to the multitracks of Queen together with the right automation-codes and mixed the thing without Freddie's voxtrack. The instrumental balance on most of those karaoke-tracks is exactly the same as the official recordings, and it's almost impossible to do that without the original automation codes. About automation: it's an extra (expensive) feature on (the better) mixing consoles available, for example the Neve's wich Queen used. You can see it in the vid of Headlong, the famous "flying faders". When mixing a song, the poor human being called the sound-engineer has to turn about a zillion knobs to get the desired sound. When ready mixing, hit the automation, and the console will remember the exact settings. Comes in very handy if you're working on different songs at the same time, also very handy for remixes. SO : those karaoke-tracks of Greatest Karaoke Hits must have been mixed by some official Queen-coorporate, like maybe David Richards. There is no way ever a chance that an amateur could have made those mixes. So my question would be : Who did the mixing? David Richards? Maybe Brian? Roger? Kevin Metcalf? Who??? Does anyone know? |

Cheers mates. Justin Shirley Smith talks a bit about the original 1996 karaoke mixes here: link And the booklets of the remastered karaoke CD/DVD of 2004 mention that many tracks from The Miracle, Innuendo, Made in Heaven were preserved in instrumental form during the original sessions, perhaps even as the original backing mixes which Freddie would put his vocal on (except MIH of course). So that's why some later ones sound identical to the originals, why 'The Eye' mixes sound radically different in many cases.. because they're remixed from the multitracks. It's the same with the 5.1 mixes really. There's stuff you didn't hear before, or stuff missing because they remixed them. It's amazing they did these karaokes at about one per hour I suppose, but when you think about it, that's plenty of time to run through the song a few times, note where this or that comes in, make some adjustments. You can buy the karaokes from places like CDJapan: link (CD set) link (DVD with 3 extra bonus tracks, region-free NTSC regardless of what they say) Or look for it at hmv.co.jp or the official Queen shop. I can't be arsed to do anymore work on this reply. |

That's where I found them in the first place, and I never saw those karaoke CD's/DVD's in ANY shop here in Holland. If I found it in a shop, I would have bought them. At first, I didn't even know those karaoketracks were official Queenstuff, so imagine my surprise when I first heard them! :-| But thanks for helping solve the mystery ;-) And Mikahl : thanks for the link! VERY interesting stuff!! :-) *VERY!* Thanks again! :-) |

In Holland you can buy the Karaoke CDs/DVDs on the Queen convention in Maasluis in October. |
