I don't understand after the massive success of the magic years, the work of the band was totally under-rated after this. Why would the Miracle be so under-rated? I don't understand why so many of these songs, both from the Miracle and some from Innuendo, were rated so low in the charts! I mean, some didn't even make it into the top 20 at all! So, why after a very successful time in their career, did Queens work become less recognised than usual? Most of those works deserved alot better! |
john bodega 17.02.2006 11:24 |
People are generally stupid - this is the only possible explanation for Queen's later works having not been as highly rated as they should've been! I mean come on, what a boring, shitty world it was in 1989 (and still is, today) if everyone's too up themselves to enjoy the merits of a song like "The Miracle" just because it has something *nice* to say. Makes me wish the punk movement and all their descendants would go out and shoot themselves. |

I personally think the later stuff was their best. Don't get me wrong their early stuff is brilliant and I love that to but, 'The Miracle' is such a beautiful and incredible album and the singles should have got more regonition. If they were to re-release those singles now it would be great, because the music scene is dead in my eyes. All their are is boy bands, girl bands, 'rock' bands lol, and squeaky men like James Blunt. And 'Innuendo' should have got a lot more praise. The songs are outstanding and beautifully written and 'The Show Must Go On' getting to number 16 is just appauling. And 'Slightly Mad' ok it isn't to everyone's taste but it's still a great song and to get to number 22 is awful. It's like they had no fans left. |

I agree. Queen in their later years were fantastic. Freddie performed to the best of his slowly deteriorating ability, and their sound had become more evolved over the many, many years. I personally prefer The Hitman, I Want It All, and Ride The Wild Wind as my fave later Queen tracks. But why was Queen not so popular in the later years? It's simple. I blame the new music, then and now. Of course, hip-hop and rap had become a mainstay in the United States, and still is today. Also, alternative rock (aka garage or grunge rock) got its start in the early 90's, with bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Soundgarden, which can help explain Innuendo's lack of power on the charts. I blame the music we listen to today. It's because of cheesy pop-rock, overrated rap, and the utterly chaotic hell of female pop/dance/etc., that we can not enjoy the full power of classic rock. Bands like Rush, Foreigner, Led Zeppelin, and (of course) Queen have lost most of their fire over the decades, and this new music is to blame for all of it. I'm sure you all understand what I have said. Maybe you might even agree... :) |

"And 'Slightly Mad' ok it isn't to everyone's taste but it's still a great song and to get to number 22 is awful." It's a small consolation that this song *did* actually hit number 1 - in Hong Kong. I really do choose to ignore the sales of these later albums, they are *art* at it's finest if you ask me and it wouldn't be the first time that people have fucked up. You know, Alfred Hitchcock, one of the greatest directors I can think of, never got an Academy Award? How's that for insane??? Innuendo is easily their best album since the 70's. |

Today, rubbish music has taken over so people can't fully appreciate the real rock music Queen had to offer... rap music amongst other 'so-called music' has taken over too much and i think real music, like Queen, will be soon non-existant. I have no time for dance mixes, raps, and re-mixes. RnB, hip-hop, etc is ruling the chart and thats why i don't take much interest in the charts today. Its a shame...real music is slowly dying out. |
Micrówave 17.02.2006 13:28 |
I think the music was too intense for radio, especially songs like Innuendo. And Queen certainly wasn't "eye candy" in their later years, which seems to be a requirement to get any kind of airplay or promotion. |
Asterik 17.02.2006 14:25 |
I think Queen remained as potent in the late eighties and early nineties as they had been before. The single Innuendo had got to number one and there had been two previous hits with I Want It All and Breakthru. This was average Queen success. AKOM only had two top ten UK hits and one of them was released as a standalone the prior Novemeber (One Vision). Jazz's best UK single got to number 9. We must recognise also that both the Miracle and Innuendo were number one on the album charts too, a real mark of recognition. The perception of it being otherwise comes from many areas. Firstly Queen had reached such a level of acclaim and affection that they could now be "timeless" with their sound. Whereas with Ga Ga or AKOM, they had followed contemparory styles and made them their own, they could now afford to let the public come to them as opposed to the vice versa beforehand. The miracle and particularly Innuendo have a very timeless sound to them- on the latter there is very little "dance" music- it's orchestra and hard rock. Secondly Queen no longer toured and touring even in the MTV era is a good way of reaching out for new fans. This lack of live work was disappointing, and so kept their name out of the spotlight but that brings me to the third reason. Freddie was too ill to tour or promote work in the way he once so there was no longer the constant media presence. Finally Queen were older and more mature- it's obvious that youngsters wouldn't buy their work as much because of their suit and tie image but it did not appear to have a serious effect. If anything, the perceived lack of single success does much to suggest that people were buying the albums more- a sign that thier work as a whole was a lot more consistent in the final years. This view is backed up by the attitude of the music magazines, who slowly started to realsie their talent. Innuendo, for example gets a favourable review in Q Magazine where it is described as full of energy. |

Did anyone else notice that rap and grunge really came to the forefront of popular music culture once Freddie passed away? It's true. November 24th 1991 is the day that music died. What we call modern "music" is a lifeless cadaver. I eagerly wait for some kind of grand renaissance, where music will actually mean something, and make someone feel. And I'm not talking about "emo" music. That's just loser-boy posturing about how people's life sucks. That's downer music. Listen to a song like Breakthru, or Father to Son, or even the staples like WWRY or WATC. That's upper music. That's music that makes you feel alive, even if the topics being touched on aren't too uplifting (like Somebody to Love or It's a Hard Life), the song is, and it makes you feel better. |

The Strokes, Subways, Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Phish, The vines, hives, the darkness, the tea party, weezer, white stripes, hell, even some of green day's new stuff (although i consider them mainstream rock, not pop punk). All these bands that came to exist (or got big) after freddie died, are nothing? Get over it, there IS life after freddie. He was great, but there are other people that are great too (although in a different way). |
Micrówave 17.02.2006 16:50 |
I agree, there IS life after freddie. Unfortunately those bands didn't really support the argument. |

I don't like The Miracle. Not the album, the song. A lot of the songs on The Miracle are good, but IMO the title track is not so good. |

I agree.Queen wern't getting the chart success they deserved but queen had been around for nearly 20 years at this point and your forgetting that artist's like George Michael and Gun's n rose's were rising up and gaining more fame and chart success at this point. Its a main aspect today why kids are inpolite, rude, alcoholics, criminals, pregnant at 16, drug addicts, etc. If they had to listen to Queen they'd be most likely highly intelligent, artistic, free-spirited people who appreciate real music! |
