Hello fellow QueenZoners.. Happy New Year, Perhaps this has already been discussed, but anyone knows, or is there an "oficial" version on why John Deacon threw his bass and left the stage running in the end of Radio Ga Ga on Knebworth'86?? I always imagine he was desperate to go to the WC... LOL Anyone has a clue? |
Togg 05.01.2006 05:06 |
Didn't know he did, but would love to know why, did this really happen or was it a press story that was made up. I once read a story about a show in New York where according to the paper, Freddie kicked rogers kit during a song and roger then threw some sticks at Freddie, who then pushed the whole kit over, roger hit Freddie and then Freddie left the stage with John leaving Brian and Roger arguing. None of which I beleive a word of, they were far too professional and if I remember it was the NME who wrote it and they hated Queen in the 80's |

Wow, fantastic shot, I love it, question is did he throw the Bass, or did it throw him? |

John: "Now take that, you wizard. Let's see if magic helps you this time, with your irritating synthesizers. Fuck off, Edney!" |
Al TurHao 05.01.2006 05:55 |
Yes, Serry, I know that picture, and that was the event I was refering to. I knew it happened, it can be seen in RARE LIVE (in the end of Radio Ga Ga). I spoted this almost ten years ago. Still, is John's reason known? As for the other story in NME, I seriouly doubt it. There was a huge quarrel backstage (not in stage in 1984, I think) between Brian and Roger, but Freddie managed to calm things down, and according to some, to have saved the band. |

What happed to the Bass? did it get caught by a roadie of did it smash? |
great king rat 1138 05.01.2006 09:46 |
I severely doubt it would have smashed - unles you get a really good swing in, fender precisions are virtually indestructable! |
Togg 05.01.2006 10:33 |
True, but I doubt it helped it much, looks like one of those rare moments of Deaky rage we have heard about. |
great king rat 1138 05.01.2006 11:18 |
He probably just got pissed off with having to play such a crap, boring song. AGAIN! If only he'd known it was the last but one time he'd have to do it, he might have been doing a little deaky-dance instead. I love the deaky dance, in all its forms :-) |
Bobby_brown 05.01.2006 11:21 |
If you look carefully you'll notice that Freddie is recieving energy from the sky through his finger and his body is shinning! Maby John was was upset about it: "Why him?" I think that when this situation happens most of the time is because tuning problems, or problems with his monitor (he couldn't hear himself). Let's ask John... Take care |

Did they officially know back then that Knebworth would be the last show? |
Gordie Howe 05.01.2006 11:54 |
Probably...Freddie knew he had HIV during the magic tour so they probably knew it will be the last show. |

They suspected something was up though, because he seemed to behave differently then (ie. not much partying, etc). Of course, that could have had other reasons. In any case, Freddie knew it would probably be their last gig, but the rest of the band didn't. |

John may have been kidding around..or maybe he was trying to do his own Pete Townshend/Jimi Hendrix thing. They burned their guitars and smashed their guitars for ''showmanship'' and thrill/spectacle effect. Maybe that was John's way of showmanship. Just taking a stab at why he might have done that. |
mystic_rhythms 05.01.2006 13:24 |
well, to be honest, i haven't seen the bass-throwing incident, but I do know that it DID happen, so i'm not stupid or anything I always thought that since it was the last show of the Magic Tour (and would end up being their last show altogether), John just wanted to go out with a bang. Or a smash, in this case. I don't know, that's just my take on it. |
mystic_rhythms 05.01.2006 13:24 |
sorry about that, double post! lol |

According to his roadie, John very ocassionally would throw his bass at the stage or the equipment if he was brassed off. For some reason (a row with his wife, his kid knocked a girl down, or any other option) he seemed to be quite upset at Knebworth since reportedly he threw his beloved Fender at the end of Magic and then the Elite Precision at the end of Ga Ga. I guess he played the second encore with the Fender Precision Special or perhaps the Musicman. |

I thought Freddie didn't find out he had HIV till 1987? I keep hearing both. |

The arguement supposedly stopped when they walked in on Freddie in his underwear eating a bowl of Corn Flakes? That's true. |

If it's Ga Ga, (due to the red Bass) then that's from Sydney and Knebworth, I watched it last night and didn't see Mr Deacon do that. Are you sure???? |

Question to Freddie's/John's roadie Peter Hince: "On your website, I saw a photo 1977 with your words "Me checking the neck of Johns Fender Precision - after he had 'punished' it at the previous show". Does it mean that it was John who had 'punished'it? Was he sometimes handling his bass rough?" Answer: "Very occasionaly, when things had upset him, John would throw hs guitar across the stage or at the equipment." link (Mr Hince said that John played acoustic on CLTCL...) |
