Ultimate Collection: 1986 Exactly as it says in the title. I apologise for any careless omissions or errors in advance, (I have proof-read but I have been restricted to one-handed work only). Please feel free to contribute and to push the boundaries forwards. (Also, if used/reproduced elsewhere - an acknowledgement would be courteous). This latest addition supersedes any previous versions. 1986 Queen: A Kind Of Magic Queen: Highlander Original Soundtrack UK CD - A Kind Of Magic: EMI CDP 7 46267 2 Highlander (10th Anniversary Director’s Cut) - DVD R1 Republic Pictures 55895 Theatrical Trailer One Vision Album Version - A Kind Of Magic: EMI CDP 7 46267 2 Classic Queen (4:3 No outro/Hybrid Edit - US Hollywood HR-61311-2 7" Edit - Greatest Hits II: Parlophone CDP 79 7971 2 Blurred Vision B-Side - EMI 12 Queen 6 Karaoke Instrumental - Japan Toshiba EMI TOLW - 3249.50 12" Extended - AKOM: US 1991 Hollywood HR-61152-2 1998 eYe Instrumental Edit “30 - Electronic Arts DDE05501 101S 1998 eYe Instrumental Edit 2:24 - Electronic Arts DDE05501 101S Intro Edit: 34” - Total Guitar CD Magazine US Promo 3:46 Edit - Capitol 7PRO-9546/9547 Promotional Video - Greatest Flix I & II: Pioneer PLMPD 01171 Promotional Video (Extended Version) - Greatest Video Hits II: Parlophone 7243 4 90983 9 8 In The Studio Video (Extended) - Magic Years Vol 1 A Kind Of Magic Album Version - A Kind Of Magic: EMI CDP 7 46267 2 1986 CD Bonus (A Kind Of A Kind of Magic) - A Kind Of Magic: EMI CDP 7 46267 2 Karaoke Instrumental - Japan Toshiba EMI TOLW - 3249.50 12" Extended - 12" Collection: CDQ TEL 0001 1986 Highlander OST Version - Highlander: Warner Home Video PES 38050 1998 eYe Full Instrumental 4:23 - Electronic Arts DDE05501 101S 1998 eYe "It's Magic" “03 Edit - Electronic Arts DDE05501 101S 2003 Highlander OST 4: 08 Extended Version - Live At Wembley Stadium DVD 2003 DJ Jimmy Jam's Magic White Label Bootleg Remix - Home Mini-Disc DJ Vava Tube Remix - Home Mini-Disc US 12" DJ Promo Siegel/Dethman 7:33 Remix - Hot Trax Highlander Computer Game - Commodore 64 Version Promotional Video Version (No 1) - Greatest Flix I & II: Pioneer PLMPD 01171 Promotional Video Version (No 2) - Unreleased: One Year Of Love Album Version - A Kind Of Magic: EMI CDP 7 46267 2 US Promo 3:51 CD Single - US CDS Promo Hollywood PRCD-10196-2 1986 Highlander OST - Highlander: Warner Home Video PES 38050 2002 Highlander DVD Extended Version - Highlander: Anchor Bay Demo: Town House Studios 25.01.1986 - Unreleased: Peter Freestone US Hollywood Promotional Video - Unreleased: Home Video Pain Is So Close To Pleasure Album Version - A Kind Of Magic: EMI CDP 7 46267 2 7" US Remix - US 12" Capitol V-15260 12" US Extended Remix - 12" Collection: CDQ TEL 0001 Friends Will Be Friends Album Version - A Kind Of Magic: EMI CDP 7 46267 2 Friends Will Be Friends Will Be Friends (Bonus) - A Kind Of Magic: EMI CDP 7 46267 2 7" Edit Remix - EMI Queen 8 Karaoke Instrumental - Japan Toshiba EMI TOLW - 3249.50 12" Extended - EMI 12 Queen 8 Promotional Video - Greatest Flix I & II: Pioneer PLMPD 01171 Who Wants To Live Forever Album Version - A Kind Of Magic: EMI CDP 7 46267 2 1985 CD Bonus Track (Forever) - A Kind Of Magic: EMI CDP 7 46267 2 Greatest Hits II (4:57 Edited Outro) - Greatest Hits II: Parlophone CDP 79 7971 2 US Promo CD Single 7" (4:00) Remix/Video - EMI Queen 9 Karaoke Instrumental - Japan Toshiba EMI TOLW - 3249.50 Hardcore Remix 1998 eYe 3:19 Edit - Electronic Arts DDE05501 101S Original Skip Demo No 1 - Unreleased: Home Mini-Disc Original Skip Demo No 2 - Unreleased: Home Mini-Disc Original Skip Demo No 3 - Unreleased: Home Mini-Disc Original Skip Demo No 4 - Unreleased: Home Mini-Disc Rachel's Surprise OST - Highlander Original Scores: Edel 0028892EDL Hi |

These instrumental versions from The Eye.....by instrumental does it mean that the vocals have been removed or rather that they have been replaced by an instrument of some sort playing the vocal part. Apologies in advance if this has already been discussed..... |

Great stuff, John. I seem to remember from a previous post of yours ages ago songs titled 'You're Not The Only One' and 'Demo 2' came from the AKOM recording sessions, as well as 'Love Makin' Love'. Or am I just crazy? Also - would the original version of 'A Kind Of Magic' (the one that appears in the credits of Highlander) be considered the original version or an edit? Conversely, the 2003 version from Live At Wembley - is THAT the original version or extended? I guess it's not all that important, but that just crossed my mind. |

Lester Burnham: Correct on all accounts Lester, that's why I need a proof-reader to guard against such typos! Love Makin' Love: Can be found in the FM box set (CD 7), I believe that this info is found in the accompanying book. More seriously though, like previous entries I have just stuck to facts rather than speculations - but I believe that the 'A Kind Of Magic' film version is the original "...before that rotter Freddie got hold of it." By cataloguing it as the Original Soundtrack Version (OST): 1986 Highlander OST Version - Highlander: Warner Home Video PES 38050, I thought I could circumvent any disputes. However, now the thread has moved 'beyond the academic', I welcome any such suggestions (as long as they have evidence) and I think that it was Roger Taylor who claimed that the end credit version was closer to (if not the) original itself. |

You could have given me a few more moments to complete the thread! Also, I would say that the Wembley DVD version of AKOM is the standard version, and that the Highlander version is merely an edit - if I recall correctly, it just fades out about thirty seconds before the conclusion, and I find it strange that the band would produce an extended mix of a song that was still half-baked. Maybe if the credits from Highlander had gone on for thirty seconds longer, we may have gotten the full version... |

Lester Burnham wrote: Also, I would say that the Wembley DVD version of AKOM is the standard version, and that the Highlander version is merely an edit... it just fades out about thirty seconds before the conclusion...I agree. I too think it would have been silly to extend an unreleased version, but, it does make sense to shorten the OST to fit the credit length. By this thinking, the Wembley version would be the 'original', and the End Credits version an 'edit' of that original. The comment to Mr J - was NOT meant to be taken seriously! (Hence the exclamation!). |

Thanks John! Notes: FWBF video from GVH2 is longer than from GF2. Queen's promotional video (not film) for HFE was released on GF3 VHS. Tutti Frutti from DVD is unedited version. And I don't know if it needs to be count, but how about Brian's "Butterfly" theme? |

"About You're The Only One, is it a Queen song or a Freddie solo song?" How can we possibly know? As far as I heard it's just Freddie with the piano singing along, no real lyrics and no other instrument. I suppose it's just a short demo, not a Freddie or Queen "song". It's not on the Freddie box and not on Ron B's list and also not on John Stuart's list unless I overlooked it. |

<font color=green>Rick wrote: Could anybody answer my question please.I missed the original question Rick. If you scroll through page one, you will see that it is very easy to overlook. As far as I know, 'New York' (very early demo), 'Piano Improvisation' (Freddie solo), 'You're The Only One', (Freddie solo), 'Demo 2' (possibly another Freddie solo), 'Keep Passing The Open Windows', and 'One Year Of Love' (Town House studios 25.1.1986) originate from a Townhouse demo cassette tape, and the original source of this information was Peter Freestone. I know that some of the titles, (for example 'You're The Only One') may not be the 'actual title' as catalogued by Greg (if this still exists in the vaults), but, a working title given for identification by the cassette's owner. As YV has explained above, because these tracks are no more than Freddie's doodlings, it is impossible to say whether they are ideas for either Queen or solo projects, but as a starting point, I am willing to make an educated guess. As to the actual date of the recording, the only fixed points are 'Keep Passing The Open Windows' (Recorded: August 1983 to January 1984) and 'One Year Of Love' (Recorded: Town House studios 25.1.1986) Unfortunately, this c18 month period also covers Freddie's 'Mr. Bad Guy' solo album, which was released here in the UK: 29th April 1985. Certainly, this would be the most likely time for the solo 'New York' (very early demo), to have been recorded. So the truth is I do NOT know when the remainder of the unidentifiable material - 'Piano Improvisation', 'You're The Only One', and 'Demo 2' - specifically dates from, and the August 1983 - January 1986 generalisation is the best I can offer. Again, because of the nature of the tracks, it is dificult to say whether they are Freddie solo or Freddie Queen ideas - but given that 'New York' appears in the Freddie solo box, I think it would be a strong bet that these tracks are also Freddie solo material. I personally, do NOT own these recordings, but, I do know the source to whom I am indebited to for very kindly provided me with this information. |

Now from the A KIND OF MAGIC Sessions, there is a one-sided Abbey Road cassette, labeled 'QUEEN (4)' with 'unmastered' versions of: 01. A Kind Of Magic 02. Friends Will Be Friends 03. Who Wants To Live Forever 04. One Year Of Love |

That is some excellent work on the Highlander Session there Wilki - Thank you. Do you therefore think (for cataloguing reasons) that 'A Kind Of Magic' CD version and 'Highlander' OST should be kept apart as two seperate animals, or, should we still keep them together (as they are so intertwined)? |

Thanks, John. I would consider three different 'environments' for QUEEN studio works released in 1986: One Vision Sessions, HIGHLANDER Sessions (including Kamen's work) and A KIND OF MAGIC Sessions. |

Also, the original japanese CD of LIVE MAGIC and its 1994 re-issue have the vinyl cut instead of the regular CD extended version. |

Battle Scene Under The Garden/The Prize Swordfight At 34th Street Quickening Highlander Theme etc. are these Queen pieces or Kamen orchestral scores? Or a hybrid of both? |
Wilki Amieva 09.01.2006 02:30 |
Battle Scene is 100% QUEEN, the others are Kamen's. |

I'd like to add Freddie's demo of "Born To Rock N'Roll" from the "Time" era as per the FM Solo Collection box set book "Clark recently recalled that Freddie's demo of the song was very different to that recorded by Cliff Richard. It sounded, he said, like 'classic Queen' and featured a We Will Rock You-esque chant type backing vocal from Freddie." The official QP line is "we were unable to locate aforementioned demo recording." |

There's one episode of season one of Highlander The Series (I think it's "Innocent Man" off the top of my head) where for some reason the end credits music is an instrumental version of the last 40 seconds or so of Princes (including the campy "fighting and free" bit, which isn't even used in the normal cut of the theme). Does this count as another alternate version of the song? |
Wilki Amieva 28.08.2006 19:22 |
Of course it counts! That instrumental TV edit is just the ending part of the version created for the movie (but not featured in it), except for the last part ('We were born to be princes of the universe') which was edited in (quite noticeably I must add) just for that episode. |
Last Cyborg 02.09.2006 20:03 |
Hmm yeah that last line does sound very tacked on.. it only seems to be on the DVD release of the episode, I have the same episode taped off the TV and it ends in a fadeout.. |

There's also megamix released in 1994 on the EMI "In Tune With The World" promo CD (limited edition) that features as one track: A Kind Of Magic, Driven By You (Brian's one), Take It Back (by Pink Floyd), I Would Do Anything For You (But I Won't Do That) (Meat Loaf), I Can't Dance (Genesis), Steam (Peter Gabriel) - in this order. Album contains 14 of "such" medley tracks. |
