Hi, I was speaking to a friend of mine in Birmingham the other day and I asked him what he thought about all of this Ewell 71 talk. We couldn't really make up our minds what to think about it. If it really is Barry Mitchell selling the cd and he believed it to be genuine then people have given him a bit of a hard time. It was during this conversation that my friend told me that his dad used to know Mike Grose, I think he sold him a bass guitar or something like that. Well the story goes that on the 25th of July 1970, Queen were doing a gig at PJ's club in Truro and Mike invited my friends dad along. So, he went and he recorded the show on two reel to reel tapes. The show is apparently complete apart from the gap from where he had to change the tape over. Then surprise surprise the tape got lost but about 3 months ago he was clearing out the attic and he found the two tapes. I gotta tell you guys that when my friend was telling me this I nearly collapsed in a state of shock! This has gotta be one of the most important Queen discoveries ever. I asked him if there was any chance of me getting a copy and for a start he said no chance at all. Then he said he hadn't even converted the tapes yet as he hadn't got a reel to reel machine. I think he's going to get it done professionally, It's the best way probably. I asked him if he minded me posting this on QZ and at first he said no because of how people dealt with the Barry Mitchell thing. I convinced him to let me post the topic even though he was still a bit weary of the whole idea. He just was of the idea that people on here would just dismiss it straight away and say that it was a load of shit...At the end of the day though he has the reel to reel tape in his hands, not touched for over 30 years. The evidence is all there, probably the earliest complete Queen concert ever to show up! I just want him to give me a copy now!!!!! |

I don't know if I can believe this, but if it's true. GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Jjeroen 01.12.2005 09:38 |
Hmmm... nice first post, davidmercury... Though most of the time that's not a very good sign. But indeed - if this is the real deal, he's writing Queen history! And if it is the real deal - there is also no need to fear people might dismiss it as shit AT ALL! The setlist alone should already dismiss any complaints, cause it ought to be considerably different to any recording we heard so far. |

I wouldn't mind a copy of that. |
tilomagnet 01.12.2005 10:25 |
Well, if this was indeed genuine, who would be so stupid to upload it here and not to try to get some rarities in return? |
willem-jan 8923 01.12.2005 10:32 |
If this is a genuine tape, then you've got gold in your hands. As long as it's not sold to Queen Productions all is fine. But as soon as QP gets their hands on this, it's REALLY lost forever..... I would really love to hear this show, no matter what the quality would be. Man, this news is already two hours out, and still nobody is requesting this show in the request forum :P |
PTRACER 01.12.2005 10:38 |
It's all well and good, but you said "25th July", when Queenconcerts.com said their Truro concert was on the 27th July...Maybe this is just you remembering it wrong :P But anyway, we can just hope it exists! |
Lantald 01.12.2005 10:40 |
Would be wonderful if this show became available, amazing such a tape can be lost for over 30 years! |

Nice to hear this. Really, be careful with it. |

This guy must be approx. 50 years old at least... At one point in there lives people tend to become adults and not care about those things anymore. Some day one day we will all be normal. |

some time ago i heared a similar story about a truro recording that an old mate of the group owned but it was the 27.june. this gives me a little hope that this story might be true.it would be great if we could have it here on qz and not only in collectors circles although it is a bit dangerous to discuss it here.the qp mafia possibly sent their agents already...... |

I'm afraid some solid proof of this is needed like photographs or scans etc. |

His story sounds pretty convincing. There have been numerous recordings discovered that had been "lost" for years so it's not really surprising. I'm really curious as what the exact setlist would be. I'm hoping that they played some songs from their first album... maybe The Night Comes Down or Jesus perhaps? :-) |
kyassor 01.12.2005 17:54 |
I like the way they are two friends who know Queen and their history pretty well (othwerwise why would they be discussing the Ewell gig)and one suddenly remembers that his dad was a friend of a bass player from a line up that pre-dates Ewell and had recorded a gig too - I guess a little fact like that must have been too trivial to mention previously in the friendship bewtween two Queen fans. Classic. |

I found a Hectic tape together with some Reaction demos in my closet. Can I upload it later?. |
smileexpert 01.12.2005 21:52 |
I tend to side with the skeptics. We need proof that what you're claiming to be true - is actually legit. There's no need to upload to prove your validity. Show us a picture of the reel-to-reel tape or play it over the phone to someone - to just prove your side of things. Andrew |

Yesterday I've talked with my cousin... And you know what? He told me that he's Greg Brooks and that I'll be able to spend whole weekend in Queen Archive! ;) Well, after Ewell story - I don't know what's real and what's false in this world... |
Zodiak 02.12.2005 07:34 |
That would be great, if it's true (I doubt it is) But if you could tell us more info like... sound quality, setlist or something writed in the tape cover, it will make your tale more reliable (when will you you hear the tape?) Sorry for my bad english |

I hought these early gigs were still as Smile, so it's not Queen is it? |
