Anybody like Phil Collins & Genesis here |
Mr.Jingles 26.09.2005 18:48 |
I sure do. I know many people don't like their mainstream pop era of the 80s, but regardless of whether their 70s progressive rock era was better or not, their 80s work was still superb. |
Lisser 26.09.2005 18:52 |
I like both a lot, Phil solo and with Genesis. How does Phil Collins rate as a drummer? |

Listen to ROTC on a really, really GOOD, LOUD stereo system. Paul Rodgers can absolutely, flat out FUCKING SING! The more I listen the more his voice really fits the music, save IWIA. In a word, Brilliant! |

Much as I like Phil Collins, him singing Queen stuff is a definite NO CHANCE. |

woo hoo wrote: Anybody like Phil Collins & Genesis hereAbsolutely, POSTIVELY ADORE them. (I did not like the incarnation with Peter Gabriel), but the incarnation with Phil Collins I have every album, and saw them in concert, braving a snow storm, January 1986..at their peak. My favorite album....''3 Sides Live'' which WHY for some god forsaken reason, when it was reissued on CD format, they cut the songs from the 4th studio side, including ''You Might Recall' which I love. That live album is proably my 2nd all time faborite live album by any artist, ties with The Allman Brothers Live At Fillmore East and Queen Live At Wembley Stadium. I also saw Phil Collins solo in concert about 3 or 4 days AFTER Live Aid the first week of July 1985. Both the Genesis concert and the Phil Collins solo concerts were outstanding. FYI...Phil did about a ten minute ''DAY-O'' with the crowd at his concert that I loved. I love Squonk, Abacab, Turn It On Again, Misunderstanding, Mama (especially when Phil did his ''evil laugh'' Ha ha Ha Blua Ha!), the live version medley of Cinema Show/Slipperman/Afterglow, ADORE!!!! Me And Sarah Jane, Just A Job To Do and the UNEDITED long version of Home By The Sea. GREAT Band, GREAT musicians, GREAT music. Oh...and best light/laser shows ever in concert. And Collins KICKS ass when he leaves the stage front singing lead...to do his STUPENDOUS drum solos. |

The evil laugh in Mama, was directed at a ficticious ex-lover woman who had ''done him wrong''. But....Collins' solo song...''In The Air Tonight'', the lyrics, and power in that INCREDIBLE, legendary, thunderous, drum solo, is NOT ficticious. It was directed at Collins' first ex-wife and the VERY rancorous divorce he went through with her at the time. |

I saw Phil last year in Columbus, OH. Great show!! However, he wore this Dr. Evil jacket, and with his little bald head, I dunno, he just looked bizarre.... link |

I wasn’t even intending on writing a song, I just was fooling around and I got these chords that I liked and the sound. And the chords went with the sound. You couldn’t have played faster or slower than the sound allowed you to. So it sort of created itself. So I turned the microphone on and saw the meter move, that was a good sign, and I started singing. And the lyrics you hear were what I wrote spontaneously with the feeling of that music at that time. This frightens me a bit cause there’s obviously something going on there that I don’t know about, but I’m quite proud of the fact that I sang 99.9% of those lyrics spontaneously. And when someone says “Now tell me Phil, what is it really about” I say “I don’t know. I have no idea as I just made it up as I went along” |

I like his work w/ Genesis twice as better as his solo stuff. I still have my Invisible Touch cassette I bought in 1986. His early/mid-80's solo stuff was OK (I Missed Again, Don't Lose My Number, One More Night, I Don't Care Anymore) but I never really liked his late 80s stuff or any of his 90s stuff (Two Hearts, A Groovy Kind Of Love, Dance Into The Light, True Colors, I Wish It Would Rain Down...etc.) |

I prefer Gabriel era Genesis but some of the Phil Collins era Genesis material was quite good. I like early Phil Collins solo work. Now I have a related thread to start. link |

Because they originally made two version of the album. One that had "three sides live", and was meant for the global market, and one with four sides live which was for the uk market alone... I was glad to have both versions on cd. Anyway... I'm looking forward to seeing PC in concert twice in in about two and a half weeks time. Now I just have to wait for PG and a reunion of Genesis to come to Finland... :P |

Hey I love them too! I went to Paris and soon go to Prague to see Phil! The early Genesis albums are great (with Peter Gabriel), I hope Phil will play at least one Genesis song next month!! My opinion is that you must like Genesis when you love Queen, and Pink Floyd and bands like these ones... Well it's my case ;) Bye! |

Don't like the 80s albums, save few songs like "Home By The Sea", "Mama", few others... I found "We Can't dance" a good record, like Jingles I love "No Son Of Mine", but there are two nice epics on it- "Driving While you Sleep" and a really great "Driving The Last Spike"... But 70s... man, can anything they ever recorded in 80s top "Watcher Of The Skies" or "Carpet Crawlers"? Not really... I guess I was one of those few weird ones who really liked an album "Calling All Stations"... Phil as a drummer is top class. Great, simple as that. Him singing Queen songs? Thank God not! |

My favourite Genesis albums are Wind And Wuthering and A Trick Of The Tail. Close seconds are Selling England By The Pound and Lamb. I also really liked Duke... it was good intelligent pop, before they went really pop.
Bob The Shrek wrote: I think Phil Collins is overrated as a drummer - so shoot me.Everyone in the mainstream is over-rated. For every over-rated musician, or erm, "musician", there are a hundred musicians not in the mainstream who are better in one way or another, and in most cases, FAR better. Just to name a few: Terry Bozzio, Bill Bruford, Mike Portnoy, and Chad Wackerman are nowhere near the mainstream, and they are all better drummers than every classic rock drummer. Phil Collins and is indeed a great drummer, but he's still at least a step or two below the guys mentioned above. And please, as this is a Queen forum, nobody mention Roger Taylor in the same sentence as these guys. |

Also the fact that there are many musicians who become overated once they become part of the mainstream, but they didn't receive the media attention they deserved back when they release some of their best work. For instance take 'Ride The Lighting' by Metallica, 'Boy' by U2, and of course 'Queen II'. In my opinion those were the best albums by each one of those bands. |
