This was on TV last night and I watched it for the 3rd time. I love this film.
Like mixing ''Flashdance'' with ''8 Mile'', and how important it is to follow your dreams, even against all odds and adversity....but in the case of this film, those very dreams help you OVERCOME adversity and escape where you came from, a dead end world of poverty and hopelessness..to a world of possibilities and better things.
Plus...GREAT dancing!!!!
Plus I LOVE Julia Stiles and Sean Patrick Thomas, 2 very talented young actors.

That's the ONLY thing I don;t like about her, she has such a deep voice, but then people STILL joke about that factor regarding Kathleen Turner too.
So much, that Kathleen Turner played Will's transexual DAD on ''Will & Grace''. She's a FINE actress, but how would you like to be cursed with a man's voice? Glad Kathleen Turner can joke about it.
But I adore Julia Stiles. She's a fine actress and has made several good films since.
BTW..that film was only made in 2001. In real life she was like 18, Sean Patrick Thomas was like 30!..he just looks very young. He's a fine actot too. Used to be on that Craig T. Nelson Cop show, ''The District''.
......Anyhow...I love the whole message/meaning about ''Save The Last Dance'' as well as the great dancing. Very inspirational AND enjoyable film.

NO....
You are thinking of the HO named Nicky in the film who is a HO like character, who knows Julia Stiles character (Sarah) and Sean Patrick Thomas's character (Derek) are a couple, and is a HO, spiteful HO.
Nickiy sees the 2 on the dance floor, and Nicky, HO that she is, intentionally pushed herself between the 2 and DOES do that to Derek (who is NOT Nicky's boyfriend).
Nicky does that cuz she is a jealous HO, looking to hurt Sarah who IS Derek's girlfriend, or as Nixky says ( ''watch me squash that bitch'').
Sarah runs off to the nightclub balcony, Derek follows, and Sarah even says Nicky is a HO, and,
how could Nicky ''just let her ass fall in your hands!''
I guess you can tell I know the dialogue from the film. :)
And most of it is NOT like this...it's about overcoming tragedy, adversity, and following your heart and dreams..and love...despite what anyone else says and what hand life deals you.
Good film otherwise, but I hate the ghetto pieces. I just hate the ghetto. It's horrible. I've seen fights from the ghetto and big fat guys start punching other people.
Ther'es a video on the front page of Ogrish, where a guy is standing in line, and some black girl cuts in front of him, and the guy is on the phone and says "this might be a few more minutes" to his wife or something, and the black girl calls her fat black boyfriend over (because she didn't like the comment the man made on the phone) and he starts punching the fuck out of the guy on the phone.
The ghetto part in the film, is VERY important and integral to the film.
Sarah comes from and lives in a rich, well to do, suburban home, and is a ballet student hoping to attend Juliard.
Sarah's world is shattered when her divorced MOM who she lives with is killed in a car accident, forcing 17 year old, teenage Sarah to go to live with her VERY poverty stricken jazz musician father, who lives in the ghetto of Chicago.
Derek was born and raised in that same Chicago ghetto and has seen all his friends become killers, drug delaers, thugs, etc., BUT he stays in school, is a good kid, and is trying to get into Georgetown College to go to Medical School to become a Doctor.
Both Derek and Sarah are FORCED to live in this ghetto, and have to live among the harsh surroundings and people and environment...but they find each other, BOTH tell one another their dreams , to be something BETTER, to not allow the ghetto to become their coffin/prison, to go for their dreams, ...
...inspiring one another through their mutual love....
...of dance...
..and their mutual love for one another...
..Derek gets accepted into Georgetown, which Sarah encourages and supports,..
..Sarah auditons for Juliard with Derek standing in the wings of the stage encouraging her and showing his support...and she is accepted into Juliard..
..the ghetto..in the case of this film...yes IS ugly...as it is SUPPOSED to be..to make the meaning of the film....that much more compelling, important and inspirational..to ESCAPE that ugly world...to triumph in spite of it and despite it, ...
..which BOTH Sarah and Derek do...
I thought it was crap. I fell asleep several times and I could still figure out what was going on.
And that ballet dancing wowing the Juilliard judges? Please, she looked like me doing ballet.

No, she was CHANDLER'S transexual dad on "FRIENDS."
That is so weird that you started this thread Arlene!! I watched the movie too when it was on last week and I was thinking about asking others what they thought of it!! Anyway, I like the movie. I don't LOVE it, but it's always a good movie to watch on a lazy Saturday afternoon when the only other things on are Nascar, football, baseball, and the US Open. Screw that. Good movie all in all.
A great majority of these pop & hip-hop culture movies are pure garbage, just like all the shows on MTV.
Although I have to say that I always get a kick of Snoop Dogg making cameos so he can say things like "Fo' shizzle ma' nizzle" and other bunch of nonsense that's still seems kinda funny everytime I hear it.
