Apparently, according to Queen urban legend, it was started by Queen and Rod Stewart at a drunken recording session. No one is quite sure of Rod the Bod's initial contribution, but he remains uncredited, so perhaps he just gave some slight ideas. As far as who might have written it within the walls of Queen, it's anybody's guess, but Freddie seems a logical candidate, with the song's strong piano foundation. It could be, however, that Brian and Roger each wrote the verse that they sung, repsectively.
i think it may have been the only real song that queen wrote as a group effort (except for one vision, but that was basically freddies track as it was freddies idea)
'One Vision' wasn't Freddie's idea. The lyrics were more written by Roger, and I believe the riff was conceived by Brian, but Freddie arranged the song. A true collaboration between the three of them, and John got credit because (Mercury-May-Taylor) would look strange.
i no that they worked on it together, but wasnt it basically freddies idea for the whole band to get together in the studio and work on a group project
i no that it is a true group effort, but if you had to pick a single member, it would have to be freddie

No, if Freddie hadn't sent them into the studio together, Roger would've worked on 'One Vision' on his own, as he had written a draft before they went into the studio. Therefor, I would give Roger most of the credit. Plus, Freddie's golden rule: the one who writes the lyrics gets the credit.
Except, that Roger did not write the lyrics for One Vision. He did at first, but Freddie changed all of the words that Roger had written. At least, that is what Roger says on Disc 2 on the Greatest Hits 2 DVD.
Roger did start it, though. You are right about that!

If you look in the FAQ, you'll see that Let Me Live was supposedly writen by Roger and Freddie.
Lyric rule: I think it's an urban legend. Is This The World lyrics were Fred's, Brian only wrote the music, but the song is credited to both, so the rule isn't true
One Vision: It was Fred who had the idea of writting a song together, but he didn't participate very much in the writting process. He was an arranger and very much a co-producer (with Mack), as you can check in Magic Years, but the actual songwriting team on that one was Roger + Brian.
Let Me Live: Some sources claim Roger wrote it. Apparently there are handwritten lyrics.

But hadnt Freddie and/or Brian say the 'lyric rule' was true once?
I think the lyric rule was probably true up to a point, but it may have been bent a few times when other members of the band started playing with the songs in the studio.
In the Magic Years video Roger also says that he wrote One Vision about Martin Luther King until the rest of the band got there hands on it, and now he does not know what it is about. So I think it is safe to assume that Roger started it off but the others made so many changes it turned out quite different from originally planned.
Also wasn't Stone Cold Crazy a song credited to all of them. Using (May,Mercury,Taylor,Deacon) rather than Queen.
