When I was in Llanberis (been there 3 times- I love Snowdonia!) I learned what "Croeso" mean :) But that's it :) |
dimcyril 05.08.2005 09:57 |
ahh you were taught by a nice person then. when i was in lampeter, mid wales, i met some chap in a pub who had been taught by a local mischief maker [who shall remain nameless here] that 'hello' in welsh is 'Bronnau hyfryd'. it actually means 'lovely breasts' he he i asked if he'd tried out his new welsh phrase in the town. he said 'yes i said it to the old lady in the newspaper shop this morning, but she just gave me a strange look' 'maybe it was your accent' i said to him to which he replied ' yeah probably was.' |

Your statement would claim that it's impossible to make a racist statement about your own people - that's incorrect |

I am from Wales and take no offence at earlier remarks. Touched on this subject before and it is called having a sense of humour. Most British people seem to have one but some do not(usually liberals). I work for a Bristol firm and put up with sort of thing all the time,I just call them carrot crunchers. No offence is ever meant or taken.I would rather work in that type of enviroment than a climate of fear for saying the wrong thing to the wrong person. |

Your the dickhead mate. How can someone be racist towards their own people? LOL. If a black gut disses his fellow niggers, is that racist? |
brENsKi 07.08.2005 17:05 |
please don't call me a 'dickhead' - the definition of a racist incident is: any comment or action that may cause racial offence to any individual regardless of whether they belong to the targetted racial group. i ahve spoken up, because i have witnessed and had to give evidence at the investigation that cost my boss his job - i guess WE ALL have to learn one way or another, mine was quite painful - i hope YOURS isn't so!!! i hope the following - which i found among thousands of internet pages available will help you in future: ++++++++++++++++++++++++ WHOSE JOB IS IT? At times, many of us who are by-standers or not members of the group being targeted by an oppression have trouble embracing the idea that it may actually be our job to speak up. We are hesitant to create a conflict or make others uncomfortable. However, we need to remember: 1) how hostile, oppressive or frightening it might feel to be a member of the targeted group hearing these words or being affected by this action 2) that there is virtually no way to avoid making someone uncomfortable if you really are going to identify and address and incident of racism, sexism, homophobia or oppression 3) that sometimes the only way we learn or change is by being pushed out of our comfort zones so that we stop to evaluate why we are uncomfortable or why someone we know or don't know considers our action so significant that they would take the effort to challenge it We suggest that you find a friend and PRACTICE this a bit on each other. Invent a scenario like two friends talking and one telling a bad joke. Go through the steps and see how it feels both to interrupt and be interrupted. Talk about it with your partner and with others. You can even ask for training for yourself or for your workplace, school, church or club. (See below for some resources.) If we are to end an oppression we feel ourselves, we will often have to do more than just survive the inequities and prejudice we face everyday. When we are able, we will have organize and educate ourselves and our allies to make change. Ending the oppression of others IS our job, especially when we have the privilege and resources to do so. To be a good ally, one has to both listen and take action. Think how the world would change... or even just how your own town would change if we all started challenging oppression and teaching our family, friends, neighbors and co-workers to do the same. |

Dudley should realise - this IS the FUCKING internet - it's public domain...and the individual is responsible for what they type as well as what they say....anyone could stumble in here...and take offence...how do you think most people in here become QZoners in the first place? by searching using google tell you what Dudley, YOU play by your own rules mate, but if I FIND your comments offensive I WILL still say so....YOU can be accountable for your own actions, and if YOU choose NOT to take advice from someone who knows how bad these things can get, then so be it...good luck mate |
DudleyFufkin 07.08.2005 17:22 |
Thats fair enough, but I find it hilarious that someone who makes fun of his / her race/ religion, country, whatever, can be deemed a racist. Its these liberal people who find these things "racist" who are at fault for Britain being in the state it is. "oooo we have to leave these asylum seekers in, they have no money and their country is war torn". How many of these people are in Britain now? Hundreds of thousands, how many are potential terrorists, hidden in the system? Hundreds of thousands. We've let anyone into Britain for years and look what happens. |
brENsKi 07.08.2005 17:38 |
so someone (let's say) Scottish, stumbles in here and finds YOUR (self parodying) Welsh comments offensive. who's got the problem now? YOU and the site owner - that's who. Also, be very wary of generalising using comments/terms like 'these people' when defining a race or religion....they can't EVER be 'these people' - they're individuals - - just think how offensive WE find it when (some French plitician) refer to us as 'you British, you are all the same' also - there are not 100s of 1000s of terrorists 'at large' in the UK, the vast majority (ie probably about 99.99k out of every 100k) of asylum seekers are exactly that -asylum seekers running from terrorist depsots. Of course there are some radicals - but hopefully, Blair's new 12-point plan will take care of that!!! Dudley, I sympathise with some of your sentiments, but i can't agree with your methods/reasoning sometimes - a calmer approach is more likely to arrive at a sensible resolution. radical repsonses make us no better than the radicals and fundamentalists we oppose (ironic that the word 'fundamentalist' has 'mental' in the middle eh? |
DudleyFufkin 07.08.2005 17:40 |
Yes fair enough, you have the right to your views as much as i have the right to mine, and I will carry on as normal, facing the concequences on the way. |

It is absoulutely impossible to say anything without offending someone these days.So my advice to EVERYONE is just to be more tolerant. When someone is truly racist and offensive it won't take long for that person to be rooted out.But what we have at the moment is stupid. Now some of you may not agree with this but in my opinion Ron Atkinson is not a racist, but you would swear he had just been out lynching with the hysterical reaction that followed his slip of the tongue in an excitable moment. What happens in a scared to say anything enviroment is that true racists are just very careful with what they say.So they just stay undercover. |
